A long, hot summer off came to a close on Wednesday, September 5th, as the East Islip School District welcomed students back to the first day of school. From kindergartners to seniors, excitement mingled with pride as students began their journey through the school year. The day began at 7:26 a.m. at East Islip High School, where new freshmen joined returning sophomores, juniors and seniors in the quest for learning. Not long afterward, lines of yellow school buses pulled up to East Islip Middle School in time for its 8:13 a.m. opening. While it was business as usual at the high school and middle school, the four elementary schools in the district – Connetquot, John F. Kennedy, Ruth C. Kinney and Timber Point – started their school days at a new, uniform time of 9:35 a.m. “The halls of Connetquot Elementary were filled with the sounds of laughter and excited conversations,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “The children eagerly arrived in their classrooms and were
greeted by staff members who were equally happy to be back again from the summer vacation. Instruction immediately began and students were reading, singing, creating artwork, participating in physical education classes, learning new concepts and gaining new knowledge. We are all thrilled to begin a new school year.” At Timber Point Elementary, Principal Lisa Belz was there to warmly greet students old and new. “The first day went smoothly,” remarked Belz. “It was wonderful to see all our students so eager to begin the new year.” Danielle Naccarato, the principal of RCK, was equally thrilled for school to be back in session. “We at RCK are all very excited to start off the 2012-2013 school year,” said Naccarato. “The students and teachers entered the school this morning with enthusiasm and great big smiles. Get Vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2012-2013 season vaccine is available in your area. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them. • Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. • Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself. • Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death especially in the very young or old, pregnant woman or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.
Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu? A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated. • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage. • Stay away from people who are sick. • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area. • Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label).
Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of with holding vaccines? A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable. Before I turn this column over to Dori Scofield, the Brookhaven Animal Shelter Superviser, I’m going to request that our Readers respond as quickly and as generously as they can. It’s going to take all of us to pitch in and help to heal these poor innocent souls. The 23 were used by their human owners in horrific and inhumane ways. Some were used as living “bait” to train the fighting dogs, their teeth filed down or their mouths strapped shut, unmercifly bitten and mauled. Their faces and bodies bare the visable scars; their hearts the invisible aching with longing for the love and homes they would never know. Others were used as breeders, living in small filthy cages - no human contact, no grassy fields to run in, no sweet fresh air or warm human touch. They bore litters of puppies sold to continue the cycle of cruelty. And then there are the fighting dogs, beaten and forced to act against their own sweet natures, prodded into tearing and killing. They were killed and discarded as garbage if they refused to fight. Readers, our combined communities of Nassau and Suffolk Counties need to pull together and make sure each and every one of these dogs has a “happily ever after.” There was evil living amoung us and it will take the good in all of us to make things right. Please read on for a glimpse of what Dori saw on the raid that saved 23 lives... “On September 9th, the Brookhaven Animal Shelter, along with the Suffolk County SPCA and Suffolk County Police Department,
confiscated 23 Pit Bulls from a deplorable home in Shirley, NY. Many of the dogs were stacked in rusted cages in a dark, very hot garage. All were living in their own feces and urine. Others were locked up in various rooms of the house with little or no ventilation, and the remainder lived outside in makeshift kennels. The stench could only be tolerated by a seasoned rescuer. There are few words to describe the expression in the eyes that stared back at us, unsure if we were friend or foe. After five hours of examining and removing the dogs, they were all brought back to The Brookhaven Animal Shelter to begin a new chapter in their lives. I’m sure many readers will cheer for their safety but please understand, they are but another 23 dogs added to the already overcrowded shelter. These dogs need homes desperately. Some are young, some are old, some are more beat up and scarred than others. But one thing is true... all are yearning for the love, companionship and a warm, cozy environment only a loving home can provide. Yes, we need money toward their medical care, blankets to keep them feeling secure, food to nourish their bodies, but more than anything, homes to nourish their souls. Most of the dogs are petite and all are sweet and submissive. I am asking everyone on Long Island to do something, one thing - small or large - for these dogs. Whether you can donate $1 toward the Help the Animals Fund or adopt one of these orphans, please do something. We are the voice of the voiceless... be a voice, change a life forever.”

On The Road By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Most of us have probably experienced some sort of adversity in our lives, whether of the small, petty variety or the large, lifechanging type. Overall, though, it is how we choose to deal with it that ultimately defines us. If, by taking the high road, we can somehow learn from it while not losing our sense of self in the process, well then, that’s really all we can hope to accomplish. Someone recently pointed out to me that it’s often the star players who are frequently booed while on the road. Why? Because, despite the perceived animosity, there
exists a degree of grudging respect, perhaps even jealousy that the player isn’t part of their own home team. Well, if that’s the case, then I have to believe criticism is the sincerest form of flattery. Otherwise, why would someone take the time and effort to express such negativity, if not for the sheer fact that they are anything but indifferent? Rather, they must be quite invested. Believe me, I will never truly understand those who seem to make their living by spewing hurtful opinions toward others. Perhaps it makes them feel better about themselves; perhaps they are not

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian has received a $12,500 grant from The New York Community Bank Foundation in Roslyn, NY and a $1,500 grant from The WE CARE Fund of the Nassau County Bar Association in Mineola, NY. In honor of the 11th anniversary of September 11th, 2001, students, staff and teachers on the seventh-grade purple team at Islip Middle School invited retired FDNY Captain Vincent Ungaro to speak with the students. On 9/11, Mr. Ungaro was a member of Squad 288 in Queens, which lost 19 members of their house. “There isn’t a day that goes by that we

Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci and Deputy Supervisor Trish Bergin Weichbrodt recently joined several military veterans as they passed through Islip on their journey to Ground Zero in New York City. The group of men had started the Strength and Hope Walk in Montauk, and had planned on walking all the way to Ground Zero. However, after the first 65 miles, the group had to abandon their original plan and continue on bicycles. “Our feet were torn-up after the first day,” said Doug Williams. “Luckily these bikes were donated to us so we can make it all
the way.” The group paused for several minutes at the Town of Islip’s September 11th Memorial to pay tribute to those who were killed that day. “Their persistence is an inspiration to our Town, and reminds us to always ask ourselves if those who died on 9/11 would be proud of what we accomplish in our communities” said Supervisor Croci. “These men know what it takes to serve their country and their community. They are setting an example for the rest of us to follow,” said Deputy Supervisor Bergin Weichbrodt.

The East Islip varsity football squad started the 2012 season with a resounding roar, thrilling fans in attendance at their September 7th home opener with a bruising 490 victory over rivals Copiague. Ranked only ninth in their Suffolk II division this season, with only two returning starters (TE/DE Casey Stengel and T/NG Dan Hayden), the relatively inexperienced Redmen had something to prove, and prove it they did. running back Matt Walter, who racked up 132 yards in eight carries and scored two TDs, including a crowd-pleasing 54-yard run for a score. Andre Deegan also had an impressive day, with 13 carries for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Soccer star and recent East Islip High School graduate Cari Roccaro has added another trophy to her splendid collection with Saturday’s American victory in the under-20
women’s World Cup. The U.S. defeated defending champs Germany, 1-0, on September 8th at Tokyo National Stadium in Japan, after beating Nigeria, 2-0, in the
semifinals on September 4th. Roccaro, a starter on defense for the World Cup squad, was the 2011-2012 Gatorade New York Girls Soccer Player of the Year (as well as a First Team ESPNHS All-American, a two-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American and Long Island Player of the Year). Along with approximately 269 other schools from across the United States, Timber Point will receive a plaque and flag signifying its status as a National Blue Ribbon School.

Duncan said in a statement. “Schools honored with the National Blue Ribbon Schools award are committed to accelerating student achievement and preparing students for success in college and careers. Their work reflects the conviction that every child has promise and that education is the surest pathway to a strong, secure future.” The program recognizes schools in one of two performance categories. Timber Point was chosen in the “Exemplary High Performing” category for schools that are among their state’s highest performing schools, as measured by state assessments or nationallynormed tests. Timber Point was one of only two schools from Suffolk County to receive this honor (the other being Mount Sinai Middle School), and one of only four to be named on Long Island (the two Nassau winners were South Woods Middle School in Syosset and Cantiague Elementary in Jericho). A total of 417 schools may be nominated nationwide for the National Blue Ribbon Schools award. During the selection process, the Department of Education requests nominations from the top education official in every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Department of Defense Education Activity and the Bureau of Indian Education (private schools are nominated by the Council for American Private Education). The secretary of education then invites each nominated school to submit an application for possible recognition as a National Blue Ribbon School. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced today that Timber Point had been named as a 2012 National Blue Ribbon School, based on overall academic excellence. “It is an honor for Timber Point Elementary to be recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School,” said the principal, Dr. Lisa Belz, as congratulations poured in from Belz’s fellow principals, administrators and Board of Education members in East Islip. Acknowledging the selective nature of the award, in which only 268 other American schools were honored this year, East Islip’s Superintendent of Schools John J. Finello said, “Congratulations to Dr. Belz as well as the school’s staff, teachers, students and parents for this wonderful achievement. Timber Point should be commended for the hard work and exemplary commitment to academic goals that enabled the school to receive the National Blue Ribbon designation.” Since its 1982 inception, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has recognized elementary, middle and high schools, both public and private, where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are being made in students' levels of academic achievement.
