East Islip High School’s fall sports program revved into action with practices on August 27th, ready for a new season of challenges and championships. On the athletic agenda are boys and girls crosscountry, boys varsity golf, boys varsity and JV soccer, varsity and JV cheerleading, varsity and JV field hockey, girls varsity gymnastics, girls varsity and JV soccer, girls varsity and JV tennis, girls varsity and JV volleyball, and varsity and JV football. Girls varsity volleyball coach Stacie Wixted is very pleased with this year’s lineup. “The team has eight returning players and is looking to do some damage in the playoffs this year,” said Wixted. “Brianna Heffernan, rookie of the league last year, is becoming an all-around volleyball player and will be hitting outside. Libero Vanessa Marques lets nothing hit the ground and should be in the running for defensive player in Suffolk County. Cathy Marku will take over the middle and is a blocking machine. Mariah Cullen, a new captain, has stepped up to the challenge of playing middle, a new position for her, and she has the speed to quicken our offense. Brianna Baier is a defensive specialist who we will count on to serve up some aces for us.
Hannah Reilly will be our secret weapon out of the right side blocking and hitting for us. Sarah Varnot and Kelsey Felicia will be our other two team captains and we look to them for consistent play and leadership. They are both excellent all-around players and we expect great things from them on the court this season. We have added freshman Hether Zenk, sophomore Megan Munn and junior Danielle Drywa to round out the squad, and I know that they will add depth to our team.” After tough tryouts, the boys varsity golf team for the 2012 season was selected. “This year we will be playing in a new league and facing great teams such as Sayville and Bayport-Blue Point,” noted coach Chris Robertson. “We will be looking to repeat as league champions and have retained many of last year's starters. Keep an eye out for team members Paul Caliguri, Frank Argenti, AJ Carracino and Hunter Ingram.” The girls cross-country team will open its season against Bay Shore on September 11th at Sunken Meadow State Park, led by its captains, seniors Kelsey Fryer and Grace Revello. According to coach Steve Brown, the team’s other key runners are freshman Anya Schmitt, juniors Alison
Gallagher and Kayla Murphy, and seniors Niamh Ashe, Emily Fusco and Grace Revello. “We are looking forward to a great season,” said girls JV soccer coach David Lake. “The team is looking very strong and is working extremely hard to eventually get to the varsity level. I believe the varsity team will be very successful and we will be of great help to them in the future.” Swim coach Marguerite Gomez is still working on her roster, as the swim team starts later than the other fall teams due to the team being independent. Gomez cited Julia Llewellyn (a state qualifier last year) as a swimmer to watch. East Islip’s varsity football squad began practicing on August 16th, a bit earlier than the other teams. Islip School District Board of Education President and chair of the National PTA Election Committee Catherine M. Romano visited the nation’s capital on August 10 as part of a group of parents and education advocates for an all-day meeting with White House and federal government leaders on education and other topics facing children. Dozens of White House and federal government leaders were in attendance, including White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew, Director of the
White House Domestic Policy Council Cecilia Muñoz, Senior Advisor and Assistant to the President Valerie Jarrett, Chief of Staff to the First Lady Tina Tchen and Assistant Deputy Secretary at the Department of Education Jim Shelton. “It was an absolute honor to be at the White House to discuss a topic as important as our nation’s students,” remarked Ms. Romano. “Our local community understands that investing in our children is investing in our future, and that the
time for education reform is now. I was proud to convey that message to White House and Department of Education leaders in Washington, and through my work with the PTA.” In addition to the policy briefing, Ms. Romano also attended a special event at which 12 PTA members were recognized as White House Champions of Change for their work in improving the lives of children through involvement in PTA and education.
School’s In Session The month of September brought with it many things for the students and staff of the Islip School District, among them the official end of summer and the start of the new school year. The beginning of classes and saying goodbye to summer
created an array of emotions for many of the students and teachers. With their new backpacks and lunchboxes, kindergarten students at Wing Elementary School were welcomed to the district and given the opportunity to meet their teachers and
classmates, while across town seniors at the Islip High School reunited with friends and favorite staff members after a long summer, ready to embark on their final journey within the Islip School District.

I am so disappointed in the response - or, should I say, lack of response - by the town of Smithtown to the slaughter of close to 28 cats (my previous number of 15 was incorrect) at the town shelter. I was told by an exasperated office worker that the phone in Supervisor Vecchio’s office was ringing off the hook and that Supervisor Vecchio “wasn’t going to do anything about the shelter.” She refused to give me her name. Supervisor Vecchio did not return my phone call. Calls were sent right over to the shelter and, depending on when you called, you received the following excuse: “yes, rescue organizations were called,” or “the cats were sick.” Neither of those excuses were true. However, if shelter director G. Beatty found the shelter was overcrowded or he needed to “clean up the shelter” due to an official visit, all avenues to save lives should have been explored: adoption events (there were none)...contacting our wonderful rescue organizations (none received a call). Readers, what steps do you think the public should take to effect change at the Smithown Shelter? Please send me your comments. Readers, if you are trying to volunteer at the Hempstead Town Animal Shelter or are “on hold” awaiting orientation, please send me an e-mail. Otto the Ghost returns in the free animated story Otto’s Crows Woes, where Otto aids his friends the scarecrow and the witch in saving their fall harvest of corn and pumpkins from the hungry crows. Glowing scenes and special effects make the show visually exciting and visitors are asked to be helpful like Otto by donating non perishable food items to support the efforts of Long Island Cares.
