Leftovers Each year brings with it gains and losses, milestones and mini-markers of life. With that, each holiday season is a sort of closing ceremony, if you will, a gathering together of family and friends to take stock of the year that was, with the hope that - whether good or bad - the next will be even better. This Thanksgiving, we have the opportunity to spend the day with family that we seldom see, and to make new memories along the way. Over the years, traditions have come and gone, along with many beloved relatives. This void can tend to leave behind traces of sadness, of course; but the chance to gather with those who remain is a priceless one we should always be grateful for. Among the festivities,

this November 28th commemorates the one-year “birthday” of my little baby betta, “Norton von Spudley.” Of course, one can never know the true date; but considering the tiny speck of a fish he was when I purchased him, I’d venture to guess one year is just about right. Last Thanksgiving was a bit of a rough one, coming just a few short days after the passing of my beloved Buddy the Betta - friend, fish and guest columnist extraordinaire. While no subsequent pet can ever truly replace him, my little Spud is certainly a welcome addition to the family. Speaking of new traditions, this year will mark the first in quite some time that I will not be rising at 5 a.m. to see the sunrise and head out
to Roosevelt Field for some Black Friday shopping. Not that I ever truly began my Christmas shopping at this point; rather, it was always more of a personal shopping spree, with a few gifts thrown in for good measure. I have always been more of the Christmas-in-December type of shopper; anything sooner, and the spirit hasn’t truly set in yet. And with that, I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving, no matter what form of celebration the day takes on. May you enjoy your traditions, or perhaps establish new ones, en route to lasting memories that will take you through Christmas and into 2018. Always appreciate what you have, while hoping for even better things around the corner.

The students were chosen for All-County based upon their performance at last year’s New York State School Music Association Solo Festival. Outstanding performers are then recommended by their school music teachers, and picked from a pool of hundreds of applicants representing districts across Suffolk. The students prepare for the festival with Islip teachers Zachary Butterfield and Dr. Rich Harris Jr., and then participate in a series of rehearsals that culminate in the All-County concert, where they will have the opportunity to perform under the leadership of highly skilled conductors from the college music community and professional music industry. “For a small district like Islip, we are thrilled to be represented at the county level by so many exceptional musicians,” said Vincent Green, Islip’s director of fine and performing arts.

“We feel that it’s a good idea to volunteer our time here every year because the Booster Club has been very good to us these past few years,” said Burke.
