“Mitten Tree” initiative to collect items for those less fortunate. Students whose families are in need are nominated by the guidance staff and teachers. Ruggiero and Schlageter then contact these families to obtain a “wish list” of presents for every member. Each gift is written on a paper mitten and hung from a small tree in the school’s main office. Faculty and staff choose a mitten, buy the gift and return it unwrapped to the health office. The gifts are then distributed prior to the beginning of the holiday break. “The response is always heartwarming and a positive experience for everyone involved,” said Schlageter. “Although the process can seem daunting at the beginning of every season, as the gifts come in, I am continually reminded of the strong community bonds that make Islip such a special place to work and live.” Students in the high school’s life skills class

were also eager to do their part in giving back to the Islip community via the preparation of food baskets. Starting in October, the class began running a muffin sale before school, with the proceeds used to purchase items for the baskets. “The budgeting and shopping for the baskets allows the students to work on their math, travel training and community skills while doing something nice for others,” said life skills teacher Linda Colucciello. “For Thanksgiving, the class was able to provide seven families in the community with a holiday basket.” A d d i t i o n a l nonperishable food items donated by the school’s Honor Society enabled the life skills class to create additional baskets for needy families through the winter season.

My First Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan ‘Twas the night of Christmas and all the humans have gone home, saddled with packages of presents and leftovers and happy memories of the past two days’ festivities. Me, I’m feverishly swimming laps around my bowl in a desperate attempt to work off the calories from my (multiple) meals and avoid this holiday weight gain I keep hearing so much about. I have to admit, I didn’t understand what the fuss over “Christmas” was all about. All I can say is my human never stopped running to and fro in the weeks leading up to the occasion. Every time she came home – late, I might add, resulting in my dinner being delayed yet again (insert impatient fin tapping here) – she would be carrying all sorts of bags, some filled with food, others with gifts, wrapping paper, greeting cards…

I decided I had better get something to show my appreciation for the great hospitality she has shown me over these last 10 and a half months. I had the human’s mommy pick out an oversized Snoopy stuffed animal, since I’ve noticed all sorts of plush toys around the apartment. The gift card read: To My Dearest Human, Jamie… Love, Your Buddy xoxo And people say I don’t show any gratitude! Me, I made out on the deal pretty well too. I received another gift card in my own personalized mini-stocking, along with a front row seat to Christmas Eve dinner, brunch the following morning and the unwrapping of the presents on Christmas Day. They even decorated my bowl with some ﬂashy red and green bows that I mistook for fellow fishy friends. How exciting! My human has promised me

a proper shopping spree after the new year, and I can’t wait. Although, I must say, I’m fairly low-maintenance as pets go. No fancy castles and shrubbery needed for me – just me and my plant, a generous helping of ﬂakes and maybe a weekly bath to freshen my bowl. Oh, and plenty of humanly love and attention, which I receive in spades. All in all, I am one happy betta. This Christmas thing was pretty exciting, and I hear there are more festivities scheduled for later in the week when a large glittering ball drops from the top of a building. Hopefully I’ll get a front row seat on the coffee table to witness that spectacle! Thanks again to all my readers – your support and fan mail means the world to my little finned self. Happy New Year… I’ll see ya on the ﬂip side!

As the holidays approached, a spirit of generosity and goodwill filled Islip High School, marking efforts big and small to give back to the community. The Foreign Language Honor Society collected new, unwrapped toys and gifts for children in need who live in Suffolk County, with the school community once again coming together to donate numerous gifts. James Nelson, a representative of the Suffolk County Department of Social Services, is distributing the gifts directly to the children. “We extend our sincere appreciation to all the participants in the Islip community for their generosity and support,” said FLHS adviser Karen Maisano. “Kindness is a language everyone understands.” For the past 16 years, school nurse Janet Schlageter and social worker Donna Ruggiero team up each holiday season to hold their

For East Islip High School exchange student Chiara Van Baarle, 17, her home away from home on Long Island has been a study in small contrasts to her native New Zealand, from the seasons to schooling. Hailing from the suburb of Takapuna in the Auckland Region, the 12th-grader came to East Islip this past February, staying with a local host family. The school year in New Zealand, where the seasons are the reverse of the U.S., starts at the end of January and is split into four terms with a two-week break between each term, and an eight-week summer holiday starting in early December. Van Baarle’s excellent grades in her junior year qualified her for university in senior year, which she chose to spend abroad. “I signed up for the program so that I could have a year traveling,” she said. “School in East Islip is very fun for me

as I take mostly elective classes, because none of the grades count for me at home.” Van Baarle will be returning home to New Zealand in January, but will take with her many exciting memories and a true sense of different cultures. “Life in New Zealand is pretty similar to life here, but greener, and we’re less patriotic unless we’re going to a rugby game,” she said. “We definitely use more British slang than America. Another big cultural difference is that when people here suggest things for me to do, it usually involves a restaurant or diner. In New Zealand, people would probably suggest hiking trails or rugby games.” Since arriving in America, she’s also been asked some questions that strike her as quite strange, including whether Kiwis – as New Zealanders are known – live on cliffs, keep penguins as pets and find mountain goats invading their homes. Even the average school day was a source of cultural discovery. “The lockers and the cafeteria are so typically American,” she said. “It feels like ‘High School Musical.’ The chairs being attached to the desks also seem very movie-like, and

The Islip Town Board recently honored two men who took it upon themselves to repair and refurbish Town Hall’s nativity scene. Ted Gladkowski and John Brennan are two respected local artists who

volunteered their time to help bring some holiday cheer to the Town. They noticed the state of disrepair of the Town’s nativity scene, and pooled their resources to make it look better than ever. Both men are no

strangers to community service, each having served overseas in the military and spearheaded local charitable initiatives. Their work on the nativity scene is just the latest in their long list of accomplishments.

“These two men exemplify the ideals of service to country and community, and we are so thankful for their efforts during this holiday season,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

Santa in the House

Santa was in the house for back-to-back events at East Islip High School, from a game-filled evening to a celebratory breakfast. The festivities began on the night of December 4th, when teacher Kelly Schwender and 75 students in her child development classes as well as former students hosted their fourth annual Evening with Santa community event in the high school cafeteria. All of the high schoolers involved put in more than 60 hours of preparation for the evening, which was open to all of the district’s prekindergartners through third-graders. Two of Schwender’s advanced child development

students, Jillian Spanier and Serena Zagari, developed this year’s “Candy Land” theme as their National Honor Society leadership project. The child development students created life-size props to replicate all the characters in the Candy Land board game, as well as huge lollipops, candy canes, cotton candy and gingerbread men, and designed over 15 new games. The attending children each received a laminated Candy Land “Game Trail” map to guide them through the various games and other activities that included candy tattoos, face painting, gingerbread crafts and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.

At Breakfast with Santa, the school’s annual holiday party for the Toddler High program, parents brought the program’s toddlers in to the school library on December 17th for photos with Santa and the chance to have breakfast with and thank the high school’s juniors and seniors who serve as their children’s “buddies.” “The toddlers were so happy to see Santa, and it was wonderful to see the high school students take such good care of the little ones and join them in the Santa photos,” said Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer.

Cosmetology 101 Islip High School’s new cosmetology program, outfitted with a stateof-the-art cosmetology studio, provides a dozen 11th-grade students with real-world experience in the field, giving the juniors a chance to learn professional hair and

makeup techniques and the opportunity to become licensed cosmetologists after the completion of the two-year course of study. “This program is a wonderful gateway for students to have a trade,” said Ann DiMaria, the program’s teacher. “Our

new cosmetology lab was created to simulate a real hair salon setting. The students feel comfortable, as if they’re actually working in a salon, and when they finish here, they can get a certificate of completion and go on to take the state boards.”
