In regards to their IRIS program, IRIS stands for Immediate Recognition Increases Safety. This program is free and anyone can register for at www. afyi-iris.org (parents or guardians can register and enroll their child or dependent as a member and those who are over 18 years can register and enroll themselves). The program is dedicated to the safety of those on the Autism Spectrum and those with Neurological or Brain Disorders. This includes those with Alzheimers, MS, Intellectual Development Disabilities, Down’s Syndrome, Brain Injury, PTSD and others. IRIS provides 24 hour access to members emergency information and contacts through their emergency hotline.

Another part of their IRIS program is their communication app, which is available for free in the app stores. This app contains picture language and emojis, so ﬁrst responders can communicate easily with the individual. It also contains their 24hour emergency hotline information and the 5 Keys To De-Escalation. Autism FYI was founded by Dr. James Benjamin and his wife Joyce in 2014 to help advance awareness of the needs surrounding people with Autism. They accomplish this goal of theirs through a safety membership program offered by their organization that is called IRIS, as well as through training that creates community awareness about Autism and allows businesses to become “Autism Friendly Certiﬁed”, which allows them to create a more inclusive community for those with Autism.

The Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer, Inc. is ending the year strong and has exciting plans for new and returning events when the calendar turns to 2022. The Hicksville-based organization continues to fulfill its mission of supporting children and their families during cancer treatment. The Foundation is named in honor of Sarah Grace Weippert, who lost her courageous battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in November 2002 at 12 years old. Sarah enjoyed crafts, music and ballgames, and many of the Foundation’s initiatives aim to ignite that same spark in other children. Most recently, the Foundation held its annual Holiday Extravaganza rafﬂe, which raised more than $4,000. The funds provided financial aid for holiday

Long Island State Parks To Host 27th Annual Winter Run Series

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the Long Island State Park Region will host its 27th annual Winter Run Series beginning January 2022. The series will begin Sunday, January 9th at Heckscher State Park. Additional runs will be held January 9th at Heckscher State Park, January 16th at Robert Moses State Park, January 23rd at Sunken Meadow and January 30th at Jones Beach State Park. Identity Theft Prevention Tips (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check

your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make

sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks:

Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check— name, signature, address— can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs,

made a $10 donation to the Foundation received a gold ribbon pin or a gold ribbon magnet, or a $20 donation for both. The gold ribbon is the official symbol of children with cancer worldwide. This year, Sarah would have turned 31, so in the spring the Foundation hosted its first virtual 5K race – the equivalent of 3.1 miles. The race drew more than 70 participants from across the country and generated approximately $4,800 to help support the Foundation’s initiatives. The event was so successful in its inaugural year that the Foundation is considering hosting two race events next year;

An in-person 5K race in addition to another virtual race later in the year. The Foundation is also considering the return of the popular Night of Laughter fundraiser dinner if these events can be held safely. New for 2022 will be a clothing drive fundraiser in January. The Islip School District is pleased to announce that seniors Jacqueline Bryant and Hunter Rindos were selected as recipients of the Suffolk Zone Award. Sponsored by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, the award recognizes one male and one female Suffolk County high school senior from each school district who exemplifies outstanding scholastic ability, physical education performance and leadership qualities. To qualify for the Suffolk Zone Award, recipients must earn a 90% average in high school physical education and health classes and an overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale by the completion of junior year. Recipients must contribute to the positive outcomes of their physical education

and health classes and school, always working to support the instructional efforts of the class. Additionally, the recipient must demonstrate physical education and health class leadership and serve in a leadership capacity in an extracurricular organization. Finally, the recipient must achieve a high level of physical fitness and live an overall healthy lifestyle. In addition to being excellent students, Jacqueline is a member of the girls varsity volleyball team and Hunter plays varsity lacrosse. Both students have plans to continue their sports on the collegiate level next fall. The district congratulates Jacqueline and Hunter on this outstanding accomplishment.
