Piano Competition Launched A pair of Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) piano students, Luke Gentil (Half Hollow Hills CSD) and Jeremy Kaplan (BellmoreMerrick CHSD), were featured performers at the Grace Music School’s official kickoff event for their Island-wide piano competition. The winner of the competition will earn $1,000 and will perform at Carnegie Hall. At the event, Mr. Gentil performed two of his original compositions, “Billade No. 2” and

Creativity and science came together at last weekend’s FIRST® Tech Challenge Scrimmage at Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School (LuHi). Teams, comprised of students age 12 to 18, worked alongside adult mentors to design, build, program and operate robots to play a floor game in an alliance format on a 12-foot by 12-foot field. FIRST Tech Challenge is an international program featuring hundreds of tournaments for more than 46,000 students in nearly 20 countries. Helping the Homeless Islip High School students in Renee Clock’s Junior Chamber of Commerce Club volunteered for the Gary Big Brown 68 Foundation by helping to package over 200 hot Thanksgiving meals for the homeless. Senior Angela Santaniello organized the group of students to meet at Marconi Manor in Islip to package the food, including mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, turkey, stuffing and gravy.

The meals were then served to families at a special gathering on Thanksgiving Day. “Experiences like this keep us humble and remind us to be thankful for what we have, because you never know the struggles that others are facing,” said Clock. The Gary Big Brown 68 Foundation was founded by Brentwood native Gary Brown, a former Green

Bay Packer and 1997 NFL Super Bowl champion. Brown mentors local youth at risk through mentorship programs and education. Through various community assistance programs, he encourages local youth and community members to give back to those in need and to become productive and successful members of society.

Santa Comes to Town Santa Claus came to East Islip town on the night of December 2nd, delighting the children of the community. East Islip High School teacher Kelly Schwender and more than 60 students in her child development classes had worked for a month, preparing to host their fifth annual Evening with Santa event. At each event location

in the school, children were able to take part in a different activity, including candy cane golf, bowling, face painting and bean bag throwing, as well as enjoying cookies and drinks. At the stroke of 7 p.m., Santa himself arrived and more than 200 youngsters lined up to sit on his lap and tell him what they hoped he would bring as presents before taking photos with

their families; some even brought handwritten gift lists. “Our high school students had a great time and enjoyed playing with the little ones and planning this very special evening,” said Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer. “All the children were very good this year and they told Santa that they will have a glass of milk for him when he arrives.”

Magical Musicians East Islip High School seniors Kevin Jacobsen and Michael Stevens were named All-National musicians, and were chosen to participate in the National Association for Music Education’s All-National Symphony Orchestra concert, held on November 13th in Dallas, Texas. Both exceptional students spent four days rehearsing from morning to night in preparation for their concert, and attended workshops to help enhance their musical ambitions and knowledge. They prepared challenging music under the baton of Dr. William LaRue Jones, a world-renowned conductor. The NAfME All-National Honors Ensembles include a concert band, symphony orchestra, mixed chorus and jazz ensemble. Jacobsen and Stevens qualified for their state-level honor ensemble program and competed against top students for a spot in these national ensembles. They were two of just 13 students from New York State selected for All-National Symphony Orchestra. Statewide, Jacobsen was one of only two trumpet players accepted, while Stevens was one of only two French horn players. “The East Islip music department is extremely proud of Kevin and Michael for representing the district on the national level,” said Dr. Robert J. Wottawa II, the district’s director of art, ENL, music and world languages. Both East Islip student-musicians previously attended All-State in their junior year, played this year with the New York State Council of Administrators of Music

Education’s All-County Symphony Orchestra, and are members of East Islip’s Tri-M Music Honor Society. Both travel into New York City every Sunday to participate in the New York Youth Symphony. They were recognized by the district’s Board of Education at a recent meeting.

Jacobsen has racked up many accomplishments as a trumpet player, having immersed himself in music. He began playing trumpet in the third grade, and by the fourth grade, had participated in the New York State School Music Association. He has since been chosen for Suffolk County Music Educators Association recognition each year. Jacobsen is very active in East Islip’s music program, playing in the school’s honors wind ensemble, honors symphony, honors choir and jazz ensemble, as well as in the pit orchestra for school musicals. This

past summer, he was selected to attend the prestigious Boston University Tanglewood Institute. He has played with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra for three years and the Nassau/Suffolk Band for the past three years. “All-National was a life-changing experience, because it was amazing to hear other students from different states who all have the same passion for music I have,” said Jacobsen. Stevens, who plays piano as well as French horn, began playing piano in kindergarten and horn in first grade. He has been participating in NYSSMA since kindergarten, including 24 NYSSMA festivals. He is likewise active in the school’s music program, participating in East Islip’s school’s honors wind ensemble, honors symphony, honors choir, jazz ensemble and pit orchestra. For the past two summers, Stevens has traveled through China and Europe with the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America. He also attended the Boston University Tanglewood Institute as well as other summer music programs, played with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra for seven years, and attends the Juilliard Pre-College Saturday program. “There is something magical about having musicians from around the country and variety of backgrounds unify to create music together,” said Stevens. “Despite the diverse cultures, what the orchestra was able to produce was quite amazing.”

Exploring the Origins of New Year’s Resolutions

For millenia, people around the world have commemorated the arrival of a new calendar year by adhering to various traditions. Once such tradition is making resolutions for the year ahead. Resolutions are promises to oneself geared around personal fulfillment and betterment. Resolutions are widely practiced, but some people may not understand the origins of New Year’s resolutions and why they have become the norm. Some historians tie the practice

of making resolutions to the ancient Babylonians. More than 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians celebrated the New Year in March rather than January. The spring harvest was in March, and a festival called Akitu, which lasted 12 days, was celebrated. An important part of the festival was the crowning of a new king. Special rituals also affirmed a connection to the gods. The Babylonians made promises to the gods, which included vows to return borrowed objects and pay outstanding debts.

Resolutions can also be traced to ancient Rome. The Romans were instrumental in creating a more formal calendar, and the start of the new year was moved from March to January (January and February were added to the Roman calendar under the rule of Numa Pompilius). Julius Caesar wanted to honor January’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings. Janus’ two faces enabled him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Sacrifices to Janus were made, and worshipers exchanged gifts

with one another. A custom of setting resolutions began during this period as well, with Romans promising to be good to one another. Eventually, these resolutions were funneled into prayers and fasting when Christianity was adopted by the Roman Empire. Other religious parallels include the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which is a day of atonement and reflection as celebrants examine their wrongdoings and seek forgiveness and to behave better moving forward. Yom

Kippur follows Rosh Hashanah, Judaism’s own new year. Resolutions also may be loosely tied to Medieval times. During this time, knights took a “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season. Each year, these knights would reaffirm their commitment to chivalry. Today New Year’s resolutions are largely a secular tradition, but they’re still connected to a desire to be a good person and put one’s best self forward.

Twin Track Stars East Islip High School twin track stars Jackie and Katie Ginty both signed National Letters of Intent on December 14th to run track for LIU Post next fall. “The athletic department and team were very welcoming to us,” said Katie. “We also fell in love with the campus.” The two senior sprinters, who wanted to stay together as teammates and schoolmates, both plan to major in education while at Post. The twins were a major component in East Islip’s girls spring track team finishing the 2016 season

with an undefeated 6-0 record and winning its first league title since 2008. In the championships, the Gintys finished first and second in the 100-meter dash at every meet, and first and second in the 200-meter at every meet save one. The sisters were also part of the undefeated 4x100-meter relay team, and Jackie competed in the long jump. Both sisters competed against Nassau and Suffolk’s best in the Long Island Elite Meet this past February, with Jackie earning first in the 55-meter dash,

Continued From 11 month Ms. Nielsen and her family moved into a new home, independent of CHI. Due to the help she received at CHI, Ms. Nielsen was able to become the kind of parent she has always wanted to be. Her older daughter was being bullied at school. She was able to get her the help she needed, sending her to a therapist and addressing it with the school. That same daughter will graduate early from high school this June and has already been accepted to Jamestown

College in the fall. Her two younger children are enrolled in their new schools and doing well. Her younger daughter, Rayna, has special needs and receives occupational and physical therapy, and schooling that meets her needs. Now that both younger children are a little older and enrolled in school fulltime, Ms. Nielsen is ready to start a full-time job. She is excited about the road ahead. “From my CHI case managers I learned to set small goals and work my

way toward them and that’s how I’ve accomplished a lot of things in the past six years,” said Ms. Nielsen. “That’s what I’ve taught my children to do too. We stick together and support one another. This growth and change starts in the home.” “I feel so grateful for my time at the CHI house in East Patchogue. I had never heard of a program like this that really turned my life around. I hope that house brings as many memories to the next family as it did for mine.”
