Celebrating the new year on January 1 is a relatively recent phenomenon. The calendar as we know it today has evolved several times and months have gone by different names. On the early Roman calendar, March was the first month of the 10-month calendar. That is why the last four months of the year have prefixes that coordinate with the seventh (September), eighth (October), ninth (November), and tenth (December) numerals. King Numa Pompilius reformed the calendar around 700 BCE by adding the months of January and February to the original 10 months. But the calendar still required some additional tweaking to be more aligned with the seasons. In 46 B.C., Julius Caesar introduced a solarbased calendar that was an improvement on the ancient Roman one, which was lunarbased. During this time, the month of Quintilis was renamed July in honor of Julius Caesar and Sextilis was renamed August in honor of Augustus. Shortly after the introduction of the solar calendar, the beginning of the year was moved from March 1 to January 1.

Receiver Of Taxes Announces Extended And Holiday Hours First Half Property Taxes Due On Or Before January 10, 2024

Islip Town Receiver of Taxes, Andy Wittman, has announced that his office, located at 40 Nassau Avenue, Islip, NY is accepting payment of the 2023/2024 taxes starting Monday, December 11 2023. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the following exceptions: On December 29th the office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. On December 22th, December 25th and

January 1st, 2024 the office will be closed. “One evening in January has been set aside for those residents who are unable to pay in person during our regular office hours”, said Mr. Wittman. “On Wednesday, January 10th, the office will remain open until 7:00 p.m.” Tax bills are being mailed out the week of December 11th. Residents can choose to pay their taxes by visiting the Receiver of Taxes Online Payment

Portal, Tax.IslipNY.gov to pay their property taxes online. Payment may also be received by mailing their tax payments. However, to avoid penalty, all payments must be postmarked BY THE POST OFFICE no later than January 10, 2024. Connetquot Elementary School recently celebrated First Responder Appreciation Day. Students submitted photos of family members and friends who they wanted to honor on that day, and

kindergarten teacher Meagan Faughnan put together a slideshow that teachers played for their classes. Some classes also invited veteran visitors to the school, to allow students to acknowledge and

appreciate their hard work and dedication to keeping the community safe. “My students loved welcoming some first responders into our class and recognizing their hard work,” Faughnan said.
