Catching Snowflakes

As we approach the end of 2017 and look ahead to the new horizons of 2018, we reﬂect. Each year is full of its own moments, ﬂeeting instants of happiness and sadness, anger and elation, all coming together to form this composite of life as we know it. And in those moments, we form the memories which carry us forward to the next chapter.

New Year’s Eve is upon us - a night filled with merriment, an abundance of food, plenty of alcohol, and of course those dreaded resolutions. For me, it became an annual ritual to tell myself this is the year you’re going to lose weight and get healthy. This year is different for me and, for the first time, my goals have expanded. I want to be more active and take advantage of my newfound energy, as opposed to engaging in activities simply to lose weight and not be in pain, short of breath, uncomfortable. I want to work out more and focus on specific areas, as opposed to going to the gym and struggling to work out comfortably in order to burn calories to lose a few pounds. I want to help more people realize their health goals. This is new... I have been given a gift to help others, and for that I am thankful. So, when you are thinking about the resolutions you want to make this year,

Outstanding Witness East Islip High School’s Mock Trial team put on a terrific performance at the Empire World Mock Trial Championships held in New York City from November 16th-20th. A total of 36 top teams hailing from across the U.S. as well as six foreign nations competed for the World Champion title. Sixteen students from East Islip faced teams from Alabama, Nevada and Illinois as well as the Chinese national team,

finishing the weekend with a record of 4-4 and an overall ranking of 17th among all participating teams. Judges ranked Thomas Allen, Jacob Arens, Steven Gieseler, Josh Koretz, Vince Papillo, Kaitlyn Rice and Katrina Shea as top performers in their individual rounds. Junior Meghan Walsh earned seventh place out of almost 200 witnesses and was honored with an Outstanding Witness

Harmony Café is a nonprofit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation.

When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event - a fresh meal and entertainment - on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in

Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café, which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members and sponsors are needed. Sponsors will be mentioned on Harmony Café’s website and in their newsletter, and are able to place their business information at each event they sponsor! Actress Pays Visit Acclaimed actress Syndee Winters, known for her performances as the three Schuyler sisters in the Broadway cast of “Hamilton,” recently paid an inspirational visit to East Islip Middle School chorus students. The seventh- and eighthgraders were rehearsing a “Hamilton” medley for their winter concert, and

Winters came to give them a taste of what the music sounds like when sung by a professional theater musician. Winters, who has also appeared as Nala in the touring company of “The Lion King,” performed two songs from Hamilton, “Burn” and “Satisfied,” and spoke at length about how she achieved her level of

success despite her modest beginnings. She talked to the young musicians about having a “Vision Board” upon which to put pictures of goals they would like to achieve in their future, and told them to look at it every day and be reminded of what they need to do to accomplish their dreams. She also stayed afterwards to sign autographs and

care packages took off, and students in her own classroom as well as other classes at Wing recently participated in writing letters to the troops, appreciating their heroism and providing warm holiday wishes. “The children absolutely

loved it,” said Brown. “They learned about where Afghanistan is, and we talked about some of the freedoms that we have because of all of the soldiers who have fought in the past and those who are currently fighting for us.”

As part of learning about the tools and capabilities of Adobe Illustrator, students in Heather Toomey’s electronic illustration classes at East Islip High School recently created a mandala for a class project. The students worked on both black-and-white and color versions of the mandala, which Toomey then compiled into a class coloring book. The students voted and chose Katrina Shea’s work as

Tower Tech Students at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School recently took part in a “Tower Challenge,” part of the district’s new STEAM program offered to all students in grades K-5. The objective was to create the tallest freestanding tower using 10 large red
