t was a cold and rainy night, but the sounds of the holiday season echoed throughout East Islip’s Main Street as the Timber Point Chorus heralded the annual East Islip Fire Department Tree Lighting. Along with performing groups from John F. Kennedy Elementary School and East Islip Middle School, the singers delighted the audience with the Israeli folk song Kum Bahur and A New Year’s Wish.

When Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School speech language pathologist Deborah Velasquez heard author and autism advocate Jesse Saperstein speak at a conference, she knew she needed to invite him to speak at Sherwood. On December 13th, Mr. Saperstein volunteered his time to speak with faculty at the Islip school and work oneon-one with two students recently diagnosed with a form of autism. “He’s just incredible,” said Ms. Velasquez. “To be able to ask solid questions about what is going on in the head of an autistic individual is so beneficial to the faculty.” Mr. Saperstein, who was diagnosed at the age of 14 with Asperger’s syndrome, a mild form of autism, spoke about compensating for challenges, compromising, moving forward instead of having to let go, forgiving oneself and others for mistakes, controlling impulses, “looking in the mirror,” and viewing situations and conflicts from the perspectives of others. “‘Move forward’ is the most important phrase I use,” said Mr. Saperstein. “When someone says to anyone – especially to someone with autism – ‘just let it go’ or ‘you need to move on,’ it just doesn’t work. I wanted to turn it into something positive. People are more likely to move forward than let go.” Mr. Saperstein also gave insight and advice pertaining to reallife lessons regarding education, being social, and working and getting along with others. He also advised students

and shared personal experiences with them about employment and self-advocacy. He explained information in child-friendly terms and spoke with sensitivity and understanding, while relating to the children on topics such as SpongeBob and video games. “This shows our kids that you can grow up and be whatever you want,” said Barbara Nelson, the

district’s director of pupil personnel services and special education. “I think it also gives all of us, as educators, the feeling that what we do has worth. Our students are going to be great adults.” To thank him for his visit, Ms. Velasquez presented Mr. Saperstein with two frames featuring the students’ fingerprints, as well as a poem she had written.

Ghosts Of Christmas Past By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering – well, any gathering really – in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. With the passing of my grandmother earlier this year, there was an immediate sense that this holiday season would be a bit different. So many years – decades, really – spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the

oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details

and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al, also since passed, mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend! Either way, I know I will have at least two angels watching over things to make sure all goes smoothly.

Max Michael Gieraltowski successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review in June, 2013, officially making him the 45th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, NY. Max’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Tuesday, January 14th, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timberpoint Road in East Islip. Max Gieraltowski is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “road to Eagle”, Max has served the troop as Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Scribe, and Den Chief for the Cub Scouts in Pack 38. Max is also a member of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout Honorary Camping Society. Max has also earned the following BSA Awards: Snorkeling BSA and Scuba BSA. Max has had many unique Scouting experiences, including being a member of the contingent to the National Boy Scout Sea Base – Scuba Live Aboard Adventure in 2013, The Troop 205 Adirondack Canoe Trek in 2010, the West Point Military Academy Camporee, Troop 205 trips to Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Gettysburg and Boston. Max has also attended summer camp at Camp Wakpominee in Fort Ann, NY for five summer seasons. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must

earn 21 Merit Badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major Service Project for the Community. The Service Project that Max conducted with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was the design and development of the Trinity Lutheran Preschool Playground benches, outdoor Xylophone, and “Musical Fence.” As Max reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “My experiences with Scouting have been vast and meaningful. Scouting’s path has definitely molded me into the person I am today, with its Scout laws influencing every action and decision I make. Scouting has also guided me in my ambitions, and choosing my career.” Max goes on to say, ”No matter where life takes me, I know that the knowledge and morals Scouting has given me will lead me to success in my education, my career, and my life.” Max is a Senior at East Islip High School, where he is ranked ninth in his graduating class for academic achievement, has been on the school’s Math Team, serving as the Secretary during the current academic year, and a member of the Math Honor Society serving as current Vice President. Max has also been on the High School Academic Team and Quiz Bowl. His plan after High School will be to attend college to major in mechanical engineering. Max has also been active in music, where he is a member of the East Islip High School Wind Ensemble serving as Vice President during the

current academic year, the High School Jazz Band, Pep Band and the High School Symphonic Orchestra. Community Service has been important to Max as he has logged 72.5 hours of community service, including helping at the Trinity Lutheran Church Food Pantry and Food Drive, Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang at St. Anne’s Church, along with working on many Eagle Service Projects within Troop 205. Max is the son of Kath and Michael Gieraltowski of Islip Terrace and brother to Life Scout and Patrol Leader and 10th grader, Harrison. Max’s father, Michael is an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 205.

As a college that accepts a fraction of its applicants, my dream school is certainly not a guaranteed acceptance for me. As you can already tell, I am not willing to divulge the name, as I am afraid to jinx myself. As much as I want to attend that school, the ball is in their court. Early last year, I developed my love for the college. Hopefully, this love is not platonic. I sent in my application over two months ago, on my birthday. I have been

It was a scary road, going from a kid to an adult in just a few months. During the summer, I knew that the time was approaching; but as soon as September hit, my college application game was kicked into overdrive. Hopefully, I will never have to apply to another college again. With any luck, I have already gotten into the school I have fallen in love with. There is no doubt in my

admissions officers could read my articles, they would know just how interested I am. All of my hard work will boil down to one of two words in a letter from that college. The first line of that letter will read either “congratulations” or “unfortunately.” Preferably, it will be the former, but everything happens for a reason. The Islip Animal Shelter’s 2nd Annual Holiday Toy Drive brought in double the amount of donations over last year’s event. Families across Long Island dropped by on Saturday to place treats and toys in the 90+ holiday stockings that hang on each animal’s cage. This year’s event was sponsored by Live.Love.Bark Dog Rescue Inc., the shelter’s new non-profit 501c3 volunteer organization. The volunteers of Live. Love.Bark and the shelter employees worked together to raise more than 200 gallons of toys for

both dogs and cats. “When our residents come together to donate to our animals, especially during the holiday season, it is truly heart warming,” said Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt. “Everyone deserves to be happy for the holidays and that includes all of our animals waiting for their forever homes.” Along with toys and treats, more than 300 pounds of dry food and 20 gallons of canned food, an abundance of Milkbone boxes, and roughly 10 gallons of collars and leashes were also donated.

Also collected were bottles of laundry detergent, dish soap, towels, sheets, blankets and food bowls. Live.Love.Bark also raised a monetary donation of $354.00, which will be used to purchase items from the shelter’s Amazon Wish List that were not yet donated. East Islip High School senior Kaitlin Cronin has earned the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award, which represents the highest achievement for high school members of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America. In order to complete the requirements of the award, she spent Monday afternoons at Timber Point Elementary School’s afterschool program, reading to the younger children, participating in related crafts and creating a donated portable library for the students. Logging in 80 hours of after-school reading at Timber Point, Cronin

scheduled her time with Stephen Guarino, the district’s director of art and music who also serves as the after-school program’s coordinator. To cover her expenses, Cronin collected and recycled bottles and cans and used the proceeds to purchase and donate the books for the Timber Point program’s library. “The goal of a Gold Award is for the project to be permanent or everlasting,” said her father, Ken Cronin, the former president of East Islip’s Board of Education. “Kaitlin’s legacy is the portable library for the afternoon program to use and enjoy for years to

come.” Recognizing what the Girl Scouts term “the extraordinary efforts of extraordinary girls,” the award began in 1916 as the Golden Eaglet insignia, later dubbed the Curved Bar and First Class awards before being titled the Gold Award in 1980. “Katie Cronin’s willingness to give back to her community represents all we try to instill in our young people – a sense of East Islip pride and compassion,” said Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “We are so proud of Katie’s achievement.”

Books For Troops Kindergarten students in Katheryne Walsh’s class at Islip’s Wing Elementary School understand the importance of reading, as well as the value of community service. This holiday season, the students continued Mrs. Walsh’s tradition of collecting new and gently used paperback books to donate to members of the

United States military currently stationed abroad. In an effort to personalize the 170 books that were collected, the students carefully wrapped each novel and designed and created bookmarks to send along with each book. According to Mrs. Walsh, the books were donated to military units with a personal connection

to the class, as done every year. This year, many of the books were sent to a student’s uncle who is currently stationed in Afghanistan and to Kuwait, where one of the children’s mothers has a connection with the USO. A few books will also be sent to Mrs. Walsh’s nephew, currently stationed at Fort Hood.

BOOKS FOR TROOPS - Students in Katheryne Walsh’s kindergarten class at Wing Elementary School in Islip have collected more than 170 paperback books, which were donated to United States military troops currently stationed abroad.

Students from East Islip’s Medical and Health Technology Career Academy volunteered at North Shore LIJ-Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for the hospital’s annual holiday celebration on December 1st. The East Islip students began by helping give out presents to the hundreds of children waiting for Santa

to arrive. Staying for the evening’s festivities, they continued handing out gifts and wishing attendees a happy holiday season. “Our Medical Academy students had a great time and enjoyed giving back to the community and helping Southside Hospital,” said Career Academy Director Israel Malinowitzer. “We are

proud to be partnered with the North Shore-LIJ family and are very grateful to them for including us in all of their events throughout the year. This relationship provides our students with the knowledge and internships that are necessary to be part of the Medical Career Academy.”

As part of the New York State Common Core Learning Standards, the second-graders in the Islip School District have been studying fairy tales and tall tales. In an effort to excite his students about studying this English language arts module, Robb LeVien, a secondgrade teacher at Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School, created a process bulletin board. “A process board is not a finished work,” explained Mr.

LeVien. “You put a little bit of their work up in the beginning and you build until you get to the final project.” Throughout the module, the students read seven different tall tales and fairy tales and learned about various characteristics and traits of each. To culminate their unit of study, the students wrote three paragraphs detailing the characteristics and traits of each tale and explaining which they preferred and

why. “The kids really enjoyed the process board because they were excited to see it building, and to see which writing pieces were chosen to appear on the hallway bulletin board,” said Mr. LeVien. “To make sure everyone was included, we expanded our process board into the classroom. It took us five weeks to get to the final board, but it was a fun process.”

With a goal of donating more than 500 pounds of nonperishable food to Island Harvest in time for the December holidays, the Interact, Star, Soul and Junior Chamber of Commerce clubs at Islip High School hosted a friendly competition among homerooms. The four clubs challenged each homeroom to bring in the most nonperishable food items, with the winning class receiving a pancake breakfast. With 240 items

of donated food, the students in Sara Armano’s and David Pedersen’s homeroom classes tied for first place. On December 9th, during their homeroom period, the two classes enjoyed a full breakfast cooked by family and consumer science teacher and Interact Club adviser Judy Roth and the students in the Interact Club. “This is the first year we’ve held the competition along with the food drive,” said Mrs.

Roth. “We wanted to create more interest in the drive and get more participation among the students. It worked, as we collected more than 2,500 pounds of food – far surpassing our original goal of 550 pounds.” Renee Clock is the adviser of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Melissa Miller and Liz Nolan are co-advisers of the Star Club, and Rahanna Schmalacker is the adviser to the Soul Club.

Kinney Elementary School joined with the World Sport Stacking Association and thousands of participating global organizations on November 14th to set a new Guinness World Record for Most People Sport Stacking At Multiple Locations In One Day. Guided by physical education teachers Bonnie Rabin and Bernie Ruhlig, the fourth- and fifth-graders stacked cups for 30 minutes during their physical education

classes as part of the eighth annual Stack Up! event on Guinness World Records Day. All of the participating stackers were required to be engaged in sport stacking and various fitness activities for at least 30 minutes on the day of the event. RCK and the other worldwide participants were attempting to surpass last year’s record of 483,658 stackers set by 2,375 participating global organizations. According to the WSSA, the final record-breaking count this

year was 555,932 stackers, hailing from 30 countries and representing 2,631 schools and organizations. The documentation has now been submitted to Guinness for official recognition. “The Stack Up day was a huge success and such a great experience for myself and the students,” said Rabin, who hopes she and the students can participate in future sport stacking events. “They were excited to join their peers around the world to beat the record.”
