‘Tis The Season For Memories By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Christmas time is here, once again, and as we all prepare to celebrate the season with our families, friends and loved ones, I find myself reminiscing upon the many fond memories of Christmas’ past. With that sentiment in mind, some excerpts from last year’s Christmas column… As I prepare to host my very ﬁrst holiday gathering in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reﬂect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. So many years spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma

bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family

Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend!

The American Lung Association of the Northeast is seeking charity runners to support its lifesaving mission by running in the 2015 United Airlines NYC Half marathon on Sunday, March 15th. The Lung Association has four remaining guaranteed entry charity bibs available for runners who commit to raising $2,500 dollars each to support the Lung Association’s ongoing efforts to promote healthy lungs and healthy air. Runners who have already gained entry to the NYC Half are also invited to join and fundraise with the American Lung Association of the Northeast’s 2015 NYC Half Marathon Team.

Set To Jump East Islip High School champion high jumper Faith Penny has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Division I track team at West Virginia University. WVU’s top-notch facilities in Morgantown, W.V. and Mountaineers coach Sean Cleary’s reputation factored into Penny’s decision. “The organization is all about improvement,” she said, “and it’s in the Big 12

Conference, one of the best in the country.” She has not decided on a major. The senior, who has been running since age 4, won her first championship at age 7 and set a world record in the long jump for 9 year-olds. She also was a member of the East Islip Middle School crosscountry squad. Named an All-American 37 times, she has dominated high jump as an 11-time U.S. junior

Olympic champion, seventime county champion, U.S. high school champion and four-time All-State honoree, and is a league and division record-holder in the event. She also qualified for the national championships last year. Penny attributes her success to early support from her father, Harry Penny, a track coach at Farmingdale High School and vice president of USA Track and Field.

Football Champions East Islip’s county champion varsity football team and head coach Sal Ciampi Jr. were honored at the district’s December 11th Board of Education meeting. The Redmen defeated Half Hollow Hills West, 27-14, at Stony Brook University on November

22nd to win the Suffolk County Division II championship, East Islip’s first since 2007. Superintendent Linda J. Rozzi congratulated the football players, noting that the discipline and cooperation skills that have been instilled in the football players will serve

them well in their future careers. Ciampi noted the importance of the community’s support during the team’s magical run to the Long Island finals, citing the dedication of assistant coaches, parents and siblings.

Mosaic Art Students in Bethany Majestic’s art class at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School used their interactive Promethean board to study the colorful mosaics that decorate New York City’s subway stations, serving as inspiration for their own

school project. Following the subway study, all of Commack Road’s students in grades 2-5 spent two weeks working hard on a school wide project to create a festive atmosphere in the building’s auditorium, in time for the school’s winter

concerts. The young artists sketched out a variety of holiday images and then colored them using a mosaic technique, filling in each panel with small, evenly spaced paper mosaic tiles.

The Christmas season officially began at Good Samaritan Hospital Nursing Home with the 5th Annual Cookies With Santa program on December 4th. All the residents and their families enjoyed crafts, cookies and hot

chocolate, with Christmas music provided by a DJ. There was also a visit from Santa with a photo opportunity for the whole family. To help make the season more meaningful, staff assists the residents in

writing out and sending their loved ones beautiful cards for Christmas. Later in the month, the recreation staff will wrap a small gift for each resident so that everyone has something to open on Christmas.

In Honor Of Glenn On December 17th, Marc Rosenzweig of Willow Pet Hotel presented a check from their second annual fundraiser, which raised $1,883 for the purchase of canine bulletproof vests for the local K9 units. Additionally, after seeing the story on NEWS 12, Ballistics Expert for the NYPD, Sal LaCova of Survival Armor, donated an additional vest for the cause to be presented at the event. Willow Pet Hotel’s 2nd Annual Pet Awareness Festival was a great success in raising funding for canine bullet proof vests. MTA K9 officers James Chirillo (K9Danny), James Finn (K9-Glenn- named after the late Glenn Pettit), Alan Fong (K9-George), Al Kirsch (K9-Sentry) and Robert Savage (K9-Cannan) donated their time by demonstrating how they work with their canines and explaining the importance of bulletproof vests. Since most municipalities lack the funding to provide canine vests, the event was important in creating awareness, as well as raising funds for the purchase of vests. At one point during the fundraiser, the spotlight was on officer James Finn. Officer Finn was interviewed by News 12 Long Island due to his decision to name his dog, K9 Glenn, in honor of NYPD Officer Glenn Pettit, who was tragically killed on September 11th, 2001. With

that in mind, Willow Pet Hotel decided to donate these bulletproof vests in honor of Officer Pettit. On December 17th, Willow Pet Hotel hosted the presentation of the vest and monetary donations to pay for two additional vests for the United States Police Canine Association region 7 (USPCA7) K9 Division. Officers and

their four-legged partners were in attendance to accept the donations. The donations exceeded expectations, and two vests were purchased, and the third was donated by Det. Sal LaCova. The vests will be presented to three different

police divisions: NYPD Transit Canine Division, MTA canine and NYPD Emergency Services Canine Unit. “This day is for all of the canines that help protect us every day,” says Willow Pet Hotel owner-operator Marc Rosenzweig. “We wanted to give back to the community and show that we are always there and willing to support one another. We take care of pets for a living, so we decided to raise money and support those who protect and support us. It’s the right thing to do.” Rosenzweig also went on to say that, “This was a day full of fun that brought the community together.” Willow Pet Hotel is one of Long Island’s oldest and most respected pet boarding establishments.
