Competing in States East Islip High School athletes Camryn Kreusher and Christine Llewellyn, both members of the Connetquot/East Islip girls varsity swimming and diving team, participated in the New York State Swimming Championships, held in November in upstate
Ithaca, New York. Both swimmers had earlier qualified for the state event through competing in the Suffolk County championships in Brentwood. Llewellyn, a senior, finished her successful high school career by representing her team in
the 400 freestyle relay. Kreusher, a sophomore, swam the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, earning seventh overall for the former, and achieved a personal best time while finishing in the top 20 in her signature event, the 100 freestyle.

My Night Before Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
It’s been over ten years since we last celebrated Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house. Over 20 years of my life, from childhood onward, were spent around that grand dining room table, enjoying our traditional fare of spaghetti with garlic and oil, complemented by anchovies and walnuts for the adults, just plain tomato sauce for me. This was followed by massive piles of fried shrimp, filet of sole, fried mushrooms, all prefaced by a giant platter of antipasto of course. And then, there was dessert, that array of homemade cookies – baked lovingly by my grandma and grandpa. I’m not sure where the recipes originated from, or if they were my grandmother’s own personal spin on some old favorites, but they were delicious. I recall, somewhere during my college years,
becoming interested in the actual process that went into creating these tasty treats. I set up camp at my grandparents’ kitchen table, rolling dough, cutting it into tiny strips, twirling it into a cookie shape and – best of all – drizzling the icing on top. Yum. How I miss those traditions. Looking through some old photo albums recently, I came upon dozens of snapshots of these Christmas Eve gatherings, pre-dating even little old me in some cases. The decorations may have changed through the years, and even the cast of characters to some degree… but certain things remained a constant. The tree for instance. That big, beautiful Christmas tree which stretched to the cathedral ceiling, adorned by what seemed like hundreds of sparkly ornaments… surrounded by dozens of shiny presents, wrapped with
perfection by my grandfather. And always, at the end of the night, there would be that “one more” gift that would be brought up from the basement, usually the best of all. But above all that – the presents, the food, the frenzy to have everything run perfectly from beginning to end within a reasonable interval of time (seven hours or so, give or take) – were the memories made with those people, in that house. Priceless memories. When I grow up, I had always thought, I want every Christmas Eve to be exactly like this. Of course, when you’re a child, they don’t have the heart to tell you that things will never be quite the same, or that perfect, ever again. How grateful I am that it was though, even for a brief moment in time. Merry Christmas to all. May your Eve bring even a hint of that same magic.

East Islip High School senior and Scholar-Athlete Angelina Perrone signed a National Letter of Intent on December 6th to play field hockey and lacrosse next fall for Belmont Abbey in Belmont, North Carolina. “It’s a small school, EAST ISLIP HONORS - The East Islip School District presented a certificate of which makes for a better recognition to New York State Sen. A three-sport athlete, Perrone plays forward for the varsity field hockey team and midfielder on the varsity lacrosse squad; she also is a member of the varsity basketball team. Perrone has played field hockey since seventh grade. Participation on both East Islip’s and travel teams helped grow her passion for the sport. She joined the varsity as a freshman and made an immediate impact, scoring a hat trick and game-winning goal in a memorable game against Smithtown West. She was
named All-Tournament in 2013 and 2014, and AllConference in 2015 and 2016, the latter despite missing much of the season due to an ankle injury. She also has played for the Strong Island travel team, which toured Europe, and the bronze-winning USA Futures team, which trains athletes for the Junior Olympics. Her lacrosse story is similar, as she started the sport in seventh grade and honed her ability with both the Lady Redmen and the Raid travel team. She began on attack, then switched to defense, but when she joined the varsity as a sophomore, she was moved to midfield to take a more multifaceted role, which helped her become more skilled. She was named All-Tournament in 2016. Perrone also joined the East Islip junior varsity girls basketball team as a freshman, and made the varsity team as a junior. Forty students from Islip High School visited Amityville High School on December 7th, getting to know their peers in another district as part of Amityville’s Cultural Exchange program. The purpose of the initiative is to establish new friendships
and create bonds between students from different schools. Led by coordinator Jason McGowan, the students breakfasted together and participated in icebreakers to start the day, then paired up. Each Islip student was brought by their Amityville
partner to the latter’s classes throughout the day. The event concluded with lunch and a debriefing session. Amityville’s students will in turn visit Islip in the spring.
