On the day prior to the sale, all French Club members participated in baking tiedye cupcakes. Authority, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. “This program helps students develop an appreciation for and knowledge of Long Island’s river and estuary ecosystems and collect useful scientific data,” said program coordinator Melissa Griffiths Parrott. “It teaches students to become stewards of water quality and connected to Suffolk County’s spectacular natural resources.”

Strong winds and cooler temperatures didn’t deter 38 eighth-graders from AnnMarie Mills’ Islip Middle School life science class from participating in the recent annual “A Day in the Life of the Carlls River” event. With the help of natural resource experts and several other middle school teachers, students engaged in hands-on citizen science exploration at the Carlls River in Babylon. Card Recycling Drive Keep Islip Clean’s annual Card Recycling Drive promises to be a record breaker, with cards already pouring into the KIC office just days after the official start to the project. Many people contribute used holiday cards in January, but greeting

cards of all kinds are also wanted. KIC’s Junior Commissioners will sort the cards, remove the backs and send the neatly prepared fronts to St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. Volunteers at that organization will construct “new” cards, repackage

and sell them to support children’s programs. KIC is also accepting brand new cards with their envelopes, which will be used for a letter writing campaign to soldiers overseas. Greeting cards can be dropped off at the KIC

Joshua Matthew Silverman of Islip Terrace successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on August 15th, 2016, officially making him the 67th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip and Islip Terrace. Joshua’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Tuesday, January 10th, 2017, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timber Point Road in East Islip. Joshua is currently a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “Road to Eagle,” Joshua has served Troop 205 as Troop Guide, Patrol

Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, and Librarian. Joshua has had many unique Scouting experiences, including attending and participating in National Boy Scout Jamboree in 2013 at the Bechtel Summit High Adventure Base in West Virginia, was a summer camper for four seasons at Camp Wakpominee in the Adirondack Mountains, Ft. Ann, NY, and was a weekend camper for many Troop 205 campouts on and off Long Island, New York. Joshua was also elected by his fellow Scouts and is a member of the Order of the Arrow – Scouting’s honorary camping society. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. Joshua has actually earned a total of 27 merit badges. The Service Project that Joshua developed, planned, and implemented with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was at the East Islip Soccer Club fields cleaning up, re-mulching the concession area and garden, re-painting picnic tables, weeding, and re-rocking the nearby walkway leading from the parking lot to the concession area. As Joshua reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “Throughout my Scouting career, I’ve had so many incredible experiences and opportunities that will help me through all my future endeavors. I’ve made friendships through scouting that will last a lifetime and through these friendships, countless memories were

also made! Scouting has also helped me improve my social skills such as being a leader and public speaking that will help me through college and eventually my career choice. Joshua went on to say, “Without Scouting and everything I have learned through it, I truly believe this wouldn’t have been possible.” Joshua is a June, 2016 graduate of the East Islip High School, where he was a member of many clubs and sports teams. His club memberships included the Environmental Club – maintaining and cleaning the school grounds and the Boy’s Leader Club – bringing children with mental disabilities together weekly to play board games and sports. Joshua was on the Varsity Wrestling team for three years and pole vaulted on the varsity Track team for two years, where in 2016 the team was undefeated league champions. Over this last year, Joshua was named the pole vault team captain for showing leadership skills and teaching the younger team members. He has also worked part time during high school at the Irish Coffee Pub, East Islip, where he worked his way up from busboy to head busboy and then a waiter. Joshua is now a freshman at Towson State University, studying Occupational Therapy in a five-year Master’s Program. Joshua is the son of Evelyn and Bill Silverman of Islip Terrace and brother to Ariana. Joshua’s Father, Bill, is an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 205.

East Islip High School’s Mock Trial team won the Spirit of Empire Award at the 2016 Empire World Mock Trial Championship. The award is granted to the school that shows the highest standards of civility and professionalism throughout the tournament. The Empire tournament, held from November 11th-13th at the Federal Courthouse at Cadman Plaza in Brooklyn, brought together more than 700

students from 40 schools spanning seven nations. Each team was given a form to nominate another team for positive qualities including fair play and friendliness. In addition to the competition, the students also attended the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as a tour of One World Trade Center. In Mock Trial, students prepare and conduct a legal case based a hypothetical problem. Students acting as attorneys must prepare and perform opening and closing statements, direct and cross examinations, and evidentiary arguments. Student playing witnesses must memorize witness affidavits and then testify at trial as those witnesses. During a trial, two schools compete against each other, with one arguing for the prosecution and the other for the defense. Schools switch sides for each round of a tournament. In this year’s Empire problem, a federal terrorism case, the defendant, an American citizen, was accused of conspiring with a foreign terrorist organization to plant bombs at two different hotels and of carrying out a mass shooting. Students had to prepare to argue both prosecution and defense sides of the case. In addition, one student

East Islip Idol East Islip Middle School recently hosted its 10th East Islip Idol competition, sponsored by the school’s Tri-M Honor Society, with 26 student contestants singing their hearts out to a packed audience. Eighth-grader Danielle Catanzarite was crowned the winner after singing Elle King’s ‘Ex’s & Oh’s.” The first runner up was sixth-grader Kaelyn Gordon, who sang Pink’s “Glitter in the Air”; second runner was sixth-grader Kiera Brya, who sang Anna Kendrick’s “Cups”; and third runner was sixthgrader Jack Rice, who sang Twenty One Pilots’ “Stressed Out.” Last year’s

winner, Madison Latronica, brought the house down, closing the show with a performance of “Gravity” from the Broadway musical “Wicked.” Close to 100 students auditioned for the contest, making it difficult for the producer to narrow the field down to the final 26, which also included Giovanni Danesi, Megan Donlin, Christopher Dopfel, Kristina Fiumara, Victoria Gonzalez, Hailey LaMacchia, Jeilene Law, Kate McGaugh, Victoria Miller, Noelle Naccarato, Olivia Pause, Alanna Puzo, Kaitlyn Reilly, Kaitlyn Rice, Emily Rottkamp, Gianna Russo Sanchez,

Lilly Scholl, Keira Tantillo, Kieran Tohill, Joelle Tomossone and Marissa Triolo. Mother Teresa once said, “If you can’t feed one hundred people, then feed just one.” The students of St. Mary School in East Islip didn’t know how many people they would be able to feed when they began their school’s food drive in the beginning of November. However, they were determined to feed as many people as they could. The cause was a worthy one. The proceeds would be given to Island Harvest, one of the largest hungerrelief organizations on Long Island. The school’s Student Council, National Junior

Honor Society, and the Jr. St. Vincent de Paul Society worked collaboratively to lead their school in this worthy endeavor. Hoping to involve the community as well, on Saturday, November 4th, these students and their parents and teachers volunteered to go to Pat’s Market in East Islip, and Stop & Shop in Bay Shore to ask for donations from shoppers. By mid-month, the students saw the donations from within the school and those donations from the community begin to grow. When Island Harvest came to collect the food, the students formed an

assembly-line to fill the truck with the donations. A total of 2,504 pounds of food, an equivalent of 2,087 meals, was donated to Island Harvest that day. Thanks to the diligent work of the students of St. Mary, many people could enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. It should be noted that after the Island Harvest collection, the students of St. Mary School continued to stock the shelves of their own parish food pantry for the holidays. Mother Teresa’s giving spirit is alive and well in the students at St. Mary School. They are an example for all of us.

To prepare, East Islip’s students worked almost every day after school as well as on Saturday mornings from September through November, dealing with incredibly challenging case materials that numbered more than 400 pages. Witness affidavits averaged 1115 pages, and student attorneys were required to memorize and be conversant with the Federal Rules of Evidence. East Islip’s prosecution team faced Trumbull High School from Connecticut and Sylvania Southview High School from Ohio, while the defense team faced John Adams High School from Indiana and Cape Elizabeth High School from Maine. My Grownup Christmas List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

When I was little, all I ever wanted for Christmas was a puppy. Every single year, the same thing. When that didn’t happen, I switched to a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey & Minnie Mouse.” Lofty goals for a child, to be sure… but nothing a visit to a department store Santa, list of wishes in hand, couldn’t fix. As I grew older, there were the latest Barbie dolls, electronic gadgets and toys to be had – the “fun” stuff. I remember that tinge of disappointment when I would spy shirt boxes wrapped under the tree, knowing it likely meant clothing. Yawn. How funny the way our perceptions change as we age.

Eventually, the clothes and accessories and latest trends were more appreciated, complemented with stocking stuffers of CDs and DVDs and maybe even a pair of tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Then came the gift card phase, those years of wanting to head out on my own post-holiday shopping spree in lieu of putting any real thought into a Christmas wish list. And so it remains, for the most part, to this day. Aside from a few token “musthave” toy crazes that erupt each holiday season, even the children of today seem perfectly content to collect money and gift cards from their relatives and either squirrel it away or splurge on

their own special selection. Gone is the element of surprise, of wonderment, of eager anticipation of what might appear under the tree on Christmas morning. And so, too, is some of the innocence, the childish delight. How nice it would be to recapture an element of that, especially in this day and age. This Christmas, perhaps the focus should be not on what’s under the tree, but rather those around it… the true reason for the season, after all. This year, there is nothing in particular I want, other than to spend it with my loved ones and cherish the moments and the memories to be made. That’s my list, short and sweet.

At X-mas time from year to year I wonder will I next time still be here. In old times my husband used to decorate With a lot of love and often up quite late. He also mentioned the then-pending next year Saying “I will get more lights, if I am still here.” It is sad that by now he already is long gone. Much changed from how then celebration was done. We had angels big and small with bells of all size. Some never used – on their wings still the price. Keepsakes survived from grandma’s and mother’s home! Now, my grandson with glee in those treasures does roam. My enthusiasm to lavishly decorate my home is gone. Now to the younger generation, this is meant to be done. Getting older, one gets more involved to figure out What the true reason for the season is all about. Ongoing the tradition will be I will hang the rest on my young family’s tree Some of the items -- stars and lights -- I sort out. I will donate this year to a needy crowd. The ones that move me really deep I will display near the hearth and for myself do keep. Yes, X-mas seems to come faster and faster each year Let’s enjoy it and cherish what to us is dear.

Long Island decked out the room helping to really set the tone of a festive party atmosphere and Parties by Ziggy provided non-stop entertainment, helping get the children out on the dance-floor and setting the bar high for the energy level in the room. The entertainment also included enthusiastic volunteers from Hauppauge’s Venturing Crew 872 who dressed up as some classic characters such as Mickey and Minnie and included some more modern characters such as Olaf from Frozen and Ryder from Paw Patrol. Incredible Ices, Incredible Ivan the magician and some really talented face painters added so much to the event, as did performances from local kick-line groups and dance groups like the Arrowettes from Sachem and the Patchogue Medford Raiderettes. The children and their parents we captivated by the presentation and

special guests that Long Island’s own Nature Nick provided, including an armadillo, monkey, owl and even a kangaroo! Each of the children and their siblings had an opportunity to receive a gift, and thanks to Mr. Krantz and his unending generosity, each family went home with a car-full of goodies, to bring them some extra cheer during the holiday season. This year marked the seventh year that this beautiful and special event is held. The children, who had nonstop smiles on their faces, and their families not only enjoyed themselves, but were able to connect with other Angela’s House families that they otherwise had never met. For a few hours, the stresses of caring for a medically fragile child were backseat to creating lasting memories and enjoying the holiday season.

These services may be provided to children who have or are suspected of having a disability and are eligible based on NYSED and NYSDOH guidelines for eligibility. For Early Intervention, referrals are made to the Suffolk County Department of Health. For Preschool services, refer to your local school district Committee on Preschool Special Education. All services provided for eligible children are funded through your local municipality and NYS, there is no out of pocket expense. Parents will, however, be expected to pay for the costs of any childcare. Based on an evaluation, the Municipality for Early Intervention and your District CPSE for preschool will determine the type of service, frequency, duration, location and provider of services. All treating therapists and teachers are appropriately licensed and/or certified according to the regulations of the NYSDOH and/or NYSED.
