Happy 335th Birthday, Islip! More than 100 people joined Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, members of the Islip Town Board, state and local elected officials and members of the Islip community, at a kick-off celebration marking the Town of Islip’s 335th Birthday. Town officials “flipped the switch” turning the Town Hall Cupola a deep shade of blue, to commemorate the founding of the Town of Islip by William Nicholl on November 29th 1638. William Nicholl purchased approximately 50,000 acres of land from Chief Winnequaheagh of
Connetquot 335 years ago, and named it Islip Grange in honor of his hometown of Islip, England. He later received an official royal patent for the land from King Charles II. Supervisor Carpenter welcomed the Color Guard by the Islip American Legion Rusy Bohm Post 411 and the Lt. Michael C. Murphy Sea Cadets. Senator Phil Boyle led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the singing of the Star Spangled Banner by Retired SCPD, Jim Edmonds. A performance by the Brentwood High School Marching Band wowed the crowd, as did a visit by

Eighth-graders in AnnMarie Mills’ life science class at Islip Middle School recently put on their waders and participated in a the annual “A Day in the Life of a River” field trip. With the help of natural resource experts and several other middle school teachers, the students engaged in hands-on citizen science exploration at Carlls River in Babylon. The students were captivated by the natural wonders of the forest with the guidance of renowned Seatuck Environmental Association naturalist and conservationist John Turner, who transformed a leisurely stroll through the woods into an interactive learning experience. Students identified birds,
native plants and insects on their journey as well as experiencing firsthand the harmful effects of plastic pollution on Long Island’s freshwater ecosystems. “Every step these young naturalists took that day brought them closer to becoming future conservationists themselves,” said Mills. “A Day in the Life,” coordinated by the Brookhaven National Laboratory, the Central Pine Barrens Commission, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Seatuck Environmental Association and the Suffolk County Water Authority, focuses on students exploring and collecting firsthand GIFT CERTIFICATES AVAILABLE!

At Carlls River, the students examined the physical and chemical aspects of each aquatic ecosystem, such as salinity, the amount of sediments, nitrates, phosphates, and oxygen levels in the water, as well as conducting biodiversity inventories of the flora and fauna in and around the rivers and estuary from the headwaters to the mouth of the river. Their work will help to determine the health of the aquatic ecosystem and the river’s biodiversity. This year the students enjoyed using a variety of nets purchased by the district – including a seining net, dip nets and a cast net – to capture freshwater critters. “The students were thrilled to put the nets to good use,” said Mills. December’s Charity of the Month is:
Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living. Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties!
Options services are person-centered, collaborative and recovery-oriented. Care coordinators help to improve individual health by arranging medical care, doctor visits, participation in mental health treatment and substance use disorder services, pediatric health and specialty services for children, linkage to community groups and resources and more. Additionally, the agency offers Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) to help individuals recovering from mental illness and/ or addiction.
Their agency operates a thrift shop located at 392 Hawkins Avenue in Lake Ronkonkoma. This thrift shop is open Tuesday – Saturday and relies on donations and community volunteers. The shop can be contacted at (631) 676-4579 and is in need of volunteers to help with sorting, tagging, working the register and additional duties. Volunteers must be 18 or older. Additionally, this organization takes donations of personal hygiene items (shampoo, hand soap, lotion and toothbrushes) and household cleaning necessities (laundry detergent and cleaners.) Lastly, this organization is available to conduct presentations at schools or in the community regarding their programs and/or on matters pertaining to HIV/AIDS and mental illness. When to Abandon the “Thinking” Mind One cannot accomplish anything of great significance with the thinking mind in the way. As I sit down to write this week’s column, I notice that I am in my head, which will not do, so I turn my attention to Miles Davis’ Blue is Green song playing on my phone. The soothing rhythmic sound of jazz takes me out of my thinking mind and places my energy back to that intangible place where creativity is born. It’s between the dream-state consciousness and waking consciousness, where anything seems possible, and we do not question the validity of our ideas. While it’s true that our brain is the machine that powers and processes the application of practical knowledge, those magic “aha” moments that hit us seemingly out of nowhere and have the supernatural ability to transform our lives, make themselves known when we are doing just about anything other than “thinking.” If you’ve experienced this even once in your life, you surely know what I mean.
A 2016 article in The Atlantic, titled, “The Trippy State Between Wakefulness and Sleep” states, “There is a brief time, between waking and sleep, when reality begins to warp. Rigid conscious thought starts to dissolve into the gently lapping waves of early stage dreaming, and the world becomes a little more hallucinatory; your thoughts a little more untethered.” It’s that untethered state, when we forget about time and space, and who we are supposed to be, that we do not judge our ideas or our creative impulses. It’s similar to a young child’s state of consciousness, before they learn to be self-conscious and selfcritical. A January 2018 Wall Street Journal article titled, “For Babies, Life May Be A Trip,” states, “Fascinating new neuroscience research suggests that when adults dream or have psychedelic experiences, their brains are functioning more like children’s brains. It appears that the experience of babies and young children is more like dreaming
or tripping than like our usual grown-up consciousness.” She goes on to say, “Like most adults, I spend most of my waking hours thinking about getting things done. Scientists have discovered that when we experience the world in this way, the brain sends out signals along the established, stable, efficient networks that we develop as adults.” The part of the brain where adults tend to spend most of their waking hours will help keep you safe, get to work on time, and remember to pick up the dry cleaning, but it’s not your friend when it comes to living outside the box or taking creative risks. In order to experience life in a more dynamic, passionate and creative way, we need to develop strategies for breaking us out of the thinking, critical mind so that we are able to tap into the higher collective consciousness from where all creativity and inspired ideas flow forth.
