In 1992, John Theissen held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

You can get involved with this Foundation in various different ways. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. SANTA HOPS FRONTIER FLIGHT TO WEST PALM BEACH - Islip, NY – Santa Claus gave Rudolph, his sleigh and eight reindeer a break Tuesday, and boarded a Frontier Airlines flight from Long Island MacArthur Airport to West Palm Beach, Florida for a little R&R before his long midnight ride Christmas Eve. Santa posed for pictures with passengers, made note of their Christmas lists, and spread holiday cheer while on board the 6:05am nonstop flight. Heart-Healthy Tips For The Holiday Season The holidays are a time for celebrating with family and friends, but often stress inhibits our abilities to enjoy the holiday season. From shopping to cooking to events, we are often packing our schedules while forgetting about our health. A report in the Journal of the American Heart Association noted that heart-related deaths spike during Christmas. While more research is needed to pinpoint the exact reason, researchers suggest that emotional stress, changes in diet and alcohol consumption, less staff at medical facilities and changes in physical environment (i.e. visiting relatives), could play a role in the spike in deaths. In order to protect your heart and enjoy more holidays with your loved ones, follow these tips to stay healthy and happy this season: Maintain healthy habits. Even though our schedules change during the holidays because of travel and events, it’s important to maintain regular healthy habits. For instance, eating healthy, balanced meals, moving more every day, and getting at least seven hours of sleep each night. Beware of party perils. Special holiday events could mean extra helpings of not-sohealthy meals. Try eating a healthy snack, such as a big salad or vegetable soup, before a party to avoid overindulging later. If you’re hosting or bringing a dish, offer healthier options using American Heart Association recipes and cooking tips found at recipes.heart.org. Give yourself the gift
of peace. It’s okay to say no to invitations when you have too much going on. If you start to feel overwhelmed, recharge by doing something that relaxes you, such as yoga, meditation or going for a brisk walk. Make a plan for the New Year. When all the parties are over, the winter blues set in. Instead of feeling down, challenge yourself with realistic, sustainable goals for a healthy, happy New Year! For example, start a walking routine and sign up for your local Heart Walk to stick to your goals. While avoiding stress and making good choices can help prevent heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers, it’s still important to know what to do if you or a loved one experiences the signs and symptoms of heart attack, stroke or cardiac arrest. The Journal report noted that patients hold back in seeking medical care during the holiday season, which could also explain the spike in deaths. If you or a loved one experiences the warning signs of heart attack, stroke or cardiac arrest, don’t delay, call 9-1-1 immediately. Heart Attack Warning Signs: Discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. Discomfort in other areas of the upper body, including pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. Shortness of breath,
with or without chest discomfort. Other signs may include breaking out into a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. Call 9-1-1 immediately if experiencing any of these symptoms. Stroke Warning Signs: Face Drooping. Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Arm Weakness. Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? Speech Difficulty. Is speech slurred, are they unable to speak, or are they hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like “the sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeated correctly? Time to Call 9-1-1. If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and get them to the hospital immediately. Cardiac Arrest Warning Signs: Sudden loss of responsiveness. The person does not respond to tapping on shoulders. No normal breathing. The victim does not take a normal breath when you tilt the head up and check for at least five second. Call 9-1-1 immediately and start hands-only CPR by pressing hard and fast in the center of the chest. Supporting SADD At East Islip’s Nov. 7 Board of Education meeting, the district honored Alivia Ancona from John F. Kennedy Elementary School and Lana Mollica from Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School as the winners of the annual SADD Red Ribbon anti-drug slogan contest. The two fifth graders were recognized by Superintendent John Dolan and Board of Education President William Carpluk. During October, the East Islip High School
SADD Club visited each fifth grade class at JFK and RCK to present information on drugs, alcohol, bullying and what to expect in the middle school. SADD members also ran the districtwide Red Ribbon contest, asking fifth graders to submit creative anti-drug slogans. The younger students then wrote inspirational congratulatory letters to graduating seniors, reminding them of the lessons they had just learned from SADD, which will be presented at next
June’s commencement. “Having the high school students connect with the fifth graders, helping them learn how to avoid destructive decisions, and then the fifth graders relaying that message back to the graduating seniors is so worthwhile,” said Bridget Lopiccolo, the SADD Club’s adviser. “Hopefully every message is heard and practiced, and we can stop this scary epidemic and end drug addiction.”

DMV Urges New Yorkers To Prepare For Winter Driving Conditions The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) joined today in offering tips to winterize your vehicle and to adjust to driving in more challenging weather conditions. Drivers are also reminded that they can now install snow tires on their vehicles. Under state law, snow tires can be used from October 16 through April 30. “The weather outside does not have to be frightful,” said Mark J.F. Schroeder, DMV Commissioner and GTSC Chair. “By taking steps to prepare your vehicle and yourself, you can drive in winter conditions safely and
with confidence.” To make sure your vehicle is ready for the winter, GTSC recommends asking yourself a series of questions about its preparedness: How’s the tread on your vehicles’ tires? Is the recommended amount of antifreeze in the radiator? Is the windshield washer reservoir full? If you have been driving on salted and sanded roads, have you cleaned off your lights and windows? Will the heater and defroster clear icy and fogged windows? And do you have enough gas just in case you get stuck in slow moving traffic? When you’re ready to
start driving, here are some tips to follow: Before moving your car, be certain to remove all snow and ice from it including the top of the vehicle’s roof. Snow and ice flying off your car can cause driving distractions for you and other drivers. It could hit and damage other vehicles or cause a crash. Warm up the car so the defroster has a chance to clear the windows. Turn on your headlights when you turn on your windshield wipers. New York State law makes this mandatory. Do not exceed the speed limit and always adjust your speed to the road conditions.
Leave plenty of room between your vehicle and the one ahead of you. Don’t try to pass or weave in and out of traffic. Even if your vehicle has good traction in ice and snow, you must be prepared to react if other drivers start to slide. Familiarize yourself with the vehicles you drive before you take them out in inclement weather. Do not drive during ice or snow storms unless it is absolutely necessary. When sleet, freezing rain or snow begin to fall, remember that bridges, ramps and overpasses will freeze first. Be aware that slippery spots may remain after snow is removed.
The National Highway Safety Administration also offers winter driving tips. Included in the tips is to be sure your vehicle has the right supplies: Snow shovel, broom, and ice scraper. Abrasive material such as sand or kitty litter, in case your vehicle gets stuck in the snow. Jumper cables, flashlight, and warning devices such as flares and emergency markers. Blankets for protection from the cold. A cell phone with charger, water, food, and any necessary medicine (for longer trips or when driving in lightly populated areas). Motorists are urged to check 511NY before traveling. The free travel
information system is accessible 24 hours per day by calling 511 or visiting www.511NY.org. The service provides real-time traffic conditions and links to information about air, rail and transit services. The 511NY website features a winter travel advisory system, with real-time travel reports and a color-coded map indicating which state roads are snow covered, ice covered, wet, dry, or closed to help drivers determine if travel is advisable. The system provides updated snow and ice conditions for interstates and other heavily traveled roads, as reported by snowplow operators.
