Ethical Friends of Children, a free shop for Long Island children in need is prepared for cold weather. Volunteers sorted through recently donated clothing. The program has put out a call for children’s clothing for girls, sizes two to size 8; boys clothing 0 to 6 months and sizes 7-8-9. Shoes are always welcome. This free outreach program, run and supported by the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island in Garden City since 1985, assists more than 2500 children and their families each year by providing them with clothing, backpacks for

school and infant furniture. The service is set up like a store so people can select what they want from a wide variety of clothes. In addition to clothing, the program distributes donations of pampers, children’s puzzles and small toys, EFC is staffed entirely by volunteers and there is no charge for any services. Individuals, families, or community groups donate gently used clothing and any cash donations go entirely towards purchase of needed items for children, such as diapers and formula. “Customers” are referred by

many of the area’s social service organizations and are supported by both religiously affiliated and private agencies funded by Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Volunteers are always welcome to help sort, organize and deliver clothing and goods. Five Islip High School seniors committed to continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level next fall, signing letters of intent during a Nov. 9 ceremony in the school cafeteria with their proud families looking on. Islip Seniors Continue Educator For A Day Tradition

Approximately 100 Islip High School students participated in Educator for a Day on Nov. 21, an interactive experience run by the student union that provides the opportunity for seniors to spend a day

in the life of their teachers or administrators. The students collaborated with teachers to create lesson plans for the day, teach their classes and experience what their teachers do every day.

“Educator for a Day is something that seniors look forward to each year, and it is a tradition that I am happy to uphold,” student union adviser Kristen D’Attoma said.

The Value Of Activity-Driven Fundraisers Fundraising is vital to the survival of many nonprofit organizations. Charity watchdog groups like Charity Navigator suggest nonprofits should aspire to spend less than 10 percent of their budgets on fundraising. That can be a tall task and underscores the need for charities to find creative, cost-effective ways to raise funds. Nonprofit organizations raise funds in various ways. Some organizations partner with local businesses and receive a portion of the proceeds participating establishments earn on certain days, while other organizations may cold call prospective donors during times of the year when giving to charity tends to increase, such as the holiday season. Activity-driven fundraisers are another popular way for nonprofit organizations to raise funds, and these endeavors can be highly effective. What are activity-driven

fundraisers? Activity-driven fundraisers focus on an engaging activity that encourages supporters to actively participate in an effort to raise funds. The Ice Bucket Challenge is one of the more notable activity-driven fundraisers in recent years. Participants in the challenge would pour a bucket of ice water over their heads or the head of another person, and then challenge or nominate another person to follow suit. Participants also would urge donations to support research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, an incurable motor neuron disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Additional examples of activity-driven fundraisers are runs and walks in which participants solicit donations from supporters that increase with each mile they walk or run. The American Cancer Society’s Breast Cancer Awareness 5K walk and fun run is one popular activity-driven fundraiser

that annually attracts sizable numbers of participants and donors. Are activity-driven fundraisers effective? The sheer volume of activity-driven fundraisers makes it more difficult to gauge the success of these events. However, a recent study from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that people are inclined to contribute more when the experience is painful and labor-intensive. Letting out air that gets trapped in your heating system will heat your home more effectively and reduce energy bills. If you hear pipes banging or gurgling, it’s a sign your system needs to be bled. Also, close your fireplace damper if you’re not going to be using it and consider investing in a glass screen that lets heat radiate but prevents warm air from getting vented out the chimney. Weatherstrip doors and windows. A removable door draft stopper can make a big difference. Make sure air vents aren’t blocked. If furniture or curtains block your vents, the furnace works harder than it should to warm the house, driving fuel costs up. If you really like the position of furniture covering a vent, consider a low-cost vent extender. Conserve & Manage Energy Use

Keep the thermostat between 68 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit while you’re awake, and lower when you’re asleep or away. Add insulation to walls and pipes. This is a very inexpensive way to reduce your energy bill. Focus on your attic because heat rises, and this will keep heat in your living spaces. Also pay attention to electrical outlets, anywhere utilities enter the house, pipes (to prevent freezing and bursting), and appliances such as water heaters. Adjust ceiling fans. Run fans clockwise in winter to push rising warm air down, potentially enabling you to lower the thermostat. In the summer, run fans counterclockwise to create windchill. Unplug unused electronics. Also, consider

switching to LED light bulbs, which are more energy efficient. Putting lights on a timer is both easy and cost-efficient. Put rugs on hardwood floors. This provides a layer of insulation and can warm up a room —both literally and figuratively. Open the curtains during the day and close them at night. Letting the sun in—even the weaker sunlight of winter—can help naturally warm a room, while drawing shades and drapes at night helps keep heat in and prevents drafts.
