My Buddy occasional “betta kisses” on the tip of my finger should I venture too close to the water. Bath times resulted in sulking in the corner, burrowing behind his favorite plant and being downright obstinate when it came time to transfer from his larger, luxurious suite of a tank to his tiny “starter” bowl. Those I told about Buddy initially reacted with skepticism that a mere fish could actually possess almost humanlike qualities. That was, until they met him. It was impossible not to be charmed by this tiny fish with the big fins and the even bigger personality. And boy did he love the attention! It was about six months in that I worked Buddy into my “In Step” column as a “guest columnist,” taking on the role of my spokesfish and taking over the masthead with his “In Swim” moniker. The tremendous feedback I received from readers, the majority of whom were complete strangers, was overwhelming, with some even suggesting the makings of a future children’s book series.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan Buddy the Betta first entered my life on February 16th, 2015 as a “half-birthday” present to myself, with fingers crossed that this particular foray into the world of pet ownership would fare better than, say, the two carnival goldfish I had adopted the year prior. Little did I know that this little guy – my beautiful, turquoise, delta-finned Buddy – would become exactly that… a friend, a companion, an adopted member of the family, over the next 21 months. Through nearly two years of my life, from holiday gatherings to cozy weekends spent at home, just the two of us, Buddy was a constant. I’m not sure at what point I began to view him as so much more than a pet; but that he was. They say all animals have distinct personalities and characteristics, and Buddy was certainly no exception. Day after day, our routine became such that I swore he recognized me, greeted me, anxiously awaited my arrival home from work. Meal times were met with exuberant fin-waving and ﬂitting to and fro, and the

fourth. East Islip will play the Nassau County winner (either Wantagh or Roosevelt) for the Division III Long Island Championship. This game will take place on Friday, November 25th at 4:30 p.m. at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium. There will be a $7 admission charge to attend.

HONEST WORK AT REASONABLE PRICES By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Milestones came and went, from his widely celebrated 1st Betta Birthday, to Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, summer barbeques and everything in between, with Buddy often joining my company in his tiny bowl on the dining room table or setting up shop on the coffee table in front of the television. A better life could not a betta have. Sadly, my little Buddy passed on to fishy heaven just last week. He was a fighter up until the very end, and it was truly devastating to see him go. All pets are irreplaceable, to be sure; but my Buddy holds an extremely special place in my heart, and always will. Thank you to everyone who frequently wrote in to inquire about his wellbeing and for all the support of his guest columns. In this way, he has become somewhat immortalized in print. Life won’t be the same without ya Buddy. Forever my little ﬁnned friend… Love, your Human

Prepping for Winter Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter is pleased to announce that the Town has completed its winter storm preparations for the upcoming season. Sand and salt stockpiles are at maximum capacity, and all necessary equipment is being made ready for the first significant snowfall. Outside contractors have been contacted and will be on-call to supplement the Town’s own plowing efforts, if needed. “Winter storms can result in dangerous and unsafe conditions for our residents, and the Town is doing everything possible to ensure that we are ready to meet the challenge of severe winter weather,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. Residents are encouraged to sign-up for the Town’s E-Alerts, which can be used in emergencies to get crucial information sent directly to residents. In addition, if plowing operations become necessary, residents are asked to remove their vehicles from the roadways to make space for our plows.

For Kelcie Alba, an eighth-grader at East Islip Middle School, her educational career has been a chance to explore major opportunities. While in sixth grade, she was nominated by teacher Janice Laube for the Envision Program, traveling to Washington, D.C. that year to represent

East Islip for the National Young Leaders Conference, and to Boston last summer. Alba is currently invited to attend the presidential inauguration in January. Next summer, she will choose between attending STEM programs in a number of states, or a twoweek school experience in Japan; she has already

begun learning Japanese in preparation for the latter. “Kelcie willingly embraces unique and challenging opportunities which provide her with educational and personal growth,” said Laube. “I am so proud of her accomplishments. She has a very bright and successful future.”

Gathering at the Irish Coffee Pub, an eager array of 69 students from East Islip High School recently participated in the annual Catch-A-Career Breakfast, interacting and learning from 32 table facilitators representing fields such as medical and healthcare, business and finance, law enforcement, journalism and media, politics, education, health services, engineering, environmental sciences, and information technology. Developed by the East Islip School-Business Partnership and teachers Bridget Lopiccolo and Paul McHugh for the school’s strong career exploration program, this annual networking breakfast provides a forum for students to discuss

their career plans with business professionals representing their fields of interest. Students gain insight on current trends and specific skills needed to successfully prepare for employment in that career field. “Catch-A-Career is the first step that students take to see what their future may be like,” said Lopiccolo. “The students ask vital questions of the professionals about the careers they are interested in pursuing, which helps students narrow down their career choices. Students who attend it often save thousands of dollars in college expenses because now they now know exactly what they need to get to their career goal.” Mike Russo, founder and

owner of Sticky Quotes, was this year’s keynote speaker, discussing the importance of taking advantage of opportunities in both college and career. An alumnus from East Islip’s Class of 2012, Russo was chosen as CFO of the International Business Globalization Career Academy’s Virtual Enterprises program. He is currently attending Molloy College and serves as a mentor for VE program students both in East Islip and other Long Island districts. The next step in East Islip’s career exploration program is the Mentor Me program, which provides students with the chance to participate in job shadowing during January and February.

Budget Approved

Recently, the Islip Town Board voted 4-1 to approve the 2017 operating budget, which includes an increase in taxes of $4 per month for the average homeowner. Dozens of residents turned out at the Budget Hearing November 10th to voice their opinions, the majority of whom expressed their support of the modest $48 per year increase. While it is always the goal not to raise taxes, and to make every effort to stay under the State tax cap, it was not possible this year. This

action was necessitated initially by the fact that one fire department and two ambulance companies have long-standing major projects finally beginning in 2017 that required us to pierce the cap. Average residents will see an increase of $4 per month or $48 annually based on a home assessed at $400,000. This $4 a month will ensure that the Town is able to continue to plow and salt the roads in a timely manner, pave roads, repair potholes, provide senior and recreation

programs, keep pools and parks open and so much more. “It is the duty of the Town Board to make responsible decisions that will benefit Islip residents, and that is what this budget accomplishes,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “We listened to the concerns of all of our residents, and with this incremental increase, we will be able to keep Town services functioning at a level that residents expect.”

numbers. Stylized exhibits featured select artwork and there were exclusive screenings of student films. “LIHSA has such talented students,” said the representative from SUNY Purchase. “It was great being able to see them showcase their work.” A colleague from Stony Brook University enthusiastically agreed. “This was an amazing show of talent. Extraordinary!” “The event was well planned and it was really nice to see the students perform,” said the Muhlenberg College representative. “We hope to attend again next year.” The Long Island University rep was equally impressed: “This is a great way to experience student talent.” At LIHSA, college preparation is serious business and students

put a lot of work into it. They are guided through the process every step of the way by their program directors, guidance counselors and teachers, who help them with everything from college applications and essays, to portfolio reviews and prescreening of performance recordings. Once all the applications have been submitted, the process of individualized scholarship searches begins. Last year, collegebound graduates earned more than $6 million in scholarships, and this year LIHSA plans to surpass that number. “We coordinated the Inter Arts Festival with the College Fair to show the college representatives in attendance the extraordinary talent of our students,” LIHSA Principal Jack Lenson said of the event. “We wanted them to

experience first hand why our students should be considered for admission to their schools. The fair is designed to target the needs of our students, allowing them to evaluate their options and make informed decisions about college applications.
