East Islip High School’s Camryn Kreuscher was named county champion in the 50-yard freestyle at the Section XI girls high school swimming championships, held at Suffolk Community College on Nov. 3. She also earned a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle. Kreuscher is now ranked 10th in New York State in the 50-yard and 15th in the 100-yard. Protecting Islip’s Wetlands Keep Islip Clean unveiled a new “Protected Wetlands” sign on the corner of Brook St. and Milton St. in Islip recently, promoting the ongoing effort to combat waste and littering in the Town of Islip. The new sign marks the location of Keep Islip Clean’s first Earth Day event, nearly thirty years ago. Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, along with Town Councilman John

Cochrane and DPW and Parks Commissioner Tom Owens, joined with KIC Executive Director Nancy Cochrane, KIC Chairman Emeritus Kay Erwood, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi, and Major Tim Huss, Chief Enforcement Coordinator with the Pines Barrens Commission, to celebrate the installation of the new sign. “Long Island is home to some of the most beautiful

natural sights and green spaces, and the Town of Islip is no exception,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “Keep Islip Clean plays an essential role in ensuring the longevity of those spaces throughout all the hamlets of Islip, and it’s critically important that we remain vigilant in the effort to preserve our home’s natural heritage and beauty,” she added.

Some of those organizations are hospitals, schools, veteran organizations and soup kitchens. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups.

How to Make Use of a Jacket

Coming up to New York after living in Florida, my nine year old son grew accustomed to living his life in t-shirts and shorts, unencumbered by the heavy winter gear that New Yorkers wear. As the weather has grown colder, he has been resistant to wearing his jacket, hat and gloves; instead insisting on layering t-shirts and sweatshirts. For weeks now, our morning routine has included me begging, pleading, warning him about getting sick, threatening to take away various priviliges, and at

What I’ve realized is, ultimately, I don’t have control. My job as his parent is to empower him with love, values, ideas, compassion, and the information he needs to make the right decisions for himself. All I can do is sit back and allow him to experience the world. This morning, as we were waiting together for the school bus to arrive, I observed that my son’s hat and gloves were inside his backpack; his winter jacket slung over his arm. None of these items were actually on his body. I said, “Uh... you know, carrying a hat and gloves, and holding your winter jacket won’t keep you warm. They only work if you wear them.” He replied, “I know that.” I nodded my head in mutual understanding and said, “Okay, good. I just want to be sure that

It’s my decision,” he slung his arms through his jacket. As a singular stance of independence, he skipped the gloves. I was okay with that. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. - Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! Additionally, book donations and financial donations are always welcome and The Book Fairies is in need of corporate sponsors. James has actually earned 32 merit badges.
