Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self- sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.
So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless. According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island.
So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even
permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.

L’Etoile Appointed Dance Instructor Professionally trained dancer and educator Natalie L’Etoile of East Islip has been appointed dance instructor at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts. She brings more than 20 years of experience to LIHSA’s dance department faculty. Ms. L’Etoile began her career in Anchorage, where she served as dance instructor, company dancer and choreographer for the Alaska Dance Theatre, as well as an adjunct professor of modern dance at the University of Alaska. From there, she brought her teaching skills to the New York City School system. She served as a dance teaching-artist for the Learning through Expanded Arts Program (LEAP), and taught physical education at the Middle School for Gifted and Talented students. Ms. L’Etoile holds a bachelor’s degree in modern dance from the

University of Utah and a master’s degree in Physical Education from Queens College. She holds New York State certification as a teacher of both dance and physical education.
She intends to combine her expertise in dance, choreography, fitness, nutrition and yoga to help build enrollment in what she sees as “a wellestablished, strong dance program” at LIHSA. Ms. L’Etoile’s goal as a teacher is to give her students every opportunity to grow and succeed, not only as dancers, but as wellrounded individuals. “The more they study their art, the more experience they will get. The more range they have as performers, the more versatile they will be when it comes time to choose a career. The more they diversify themselves, the more options they will have professionally.” “This feels like coming home,” Ms. L’Etoile said of her new position on the LIHSA dance faculty. “This school is very welcoming; there’s a family feel at LIHSA. I’m thrilled to be here.”

On Oct. 29, the East Islip Chamber of Commerce recognized Connetquot Elementary School first graders Adriana Fortunato and Sal Tringali as Students of the Month, chosen for their outstanding community service, leadership and character. Fortunato was recognized for reading a remarkable 680 books in the district’s 1,000 Book Project during a year’s time, over 200 more books than anyone in her grade. She is on pace to finish all 1,000 books by January 2020. “This is an extremely impressive achievement,” said Principal Nicholas Bilotti. “Well done, Adriana.”
Tringali was recognized for working hard to be kind and friendly to all. “Sal is highly responsible, respectful and humble,” Bilotti said. “He has a natural ability to work collaboratively with others and takes the time to listen and assist those in need. Last year, Sal entered kindergarten a shy, quiet young man. As the year progressed,
Sal grew in confidence. He began to regularly visit my office, usually with a friend and a drawing for me. He routinely would invite me back to his classroom. Most importantly, Sal is a gentleman. LOCAL ORGANIZATION HELPS CHILDREN IN NEED - Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. 11 Exceptional Student-Musicians Chosen To Perform
A total of 11 exceptional student-musicians from Islip High School were recently chosen to perform at the 63rd annual New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education All-County Festival. Erin Quinn (contraalto clarinet) and Gregory Warnokowski (alto saxophone) will perform with the All-County Band.
Shannon Brody (viola) will perform with the AllCounty Orchestra. Toni Castronova (alto), Tyler Cirulnick (alto), Nicholas D’Auria (tenor), Brandon Larson (tenor), Joseph Leo (bass) and Katy Zurbaran (alto) will perform with the All-County Mixed Chorus. Marisa Esposito (alto) and Noelle Richard (alto) will
perform with the All-County Treble Chorus. “I am pleased that so many talented students from Islip High School were accepted into All-County ensembles,” said Dr. Jeff S. Dailey, Islip’s interim director of fine and performing arts. “It shows the dedication of the student musicians, their parents and teachers to the art of music.”
The Historical Society of Islip Hamlet will be hosting its 26th annual Holiday House Tour on Sunday, December 8, 2019 (rain, shine, snow), from 12:00 - 5:00 p.m. Several historically and/or architecturally interesting homes will be decorated for the holidays as tour guides in Victorian dress greet you at each home. The reception, which is held at one of Islip’s historic churches, includes
live entertainment, refreshments, a Chinese auction and a 50/50 raffle. We will, again, be collecting toys for the USMC ‘Toys-for-Tots’ campaign. Please donate a new, unwrapped toy. The first event was created by American Express in conjunction with the nonprofit National Trust for Historic Preservation. Since its inception, many small business groups, merchants and politicians have touted the event and the Shop Small® mantra. The idea is that when small businesses thrive, communities and individuals thrive along with them. The Small Business Administration says that, since 1995, small businesses have generated 66 percent of all new jobs in the United States. There are a number of big reasons to shop small. One can start around the holidays and then continue all year long. • Shopping small businesses helps give back to the community directly. According to Civic Economics, a strategic planning business, on
average 48 percent of each purchase made at independent businesses is recirculated locally through tax money and other support. • Small business owners often strive to provide personalized, hands-on customer service. Repeat business is key to their survival, so they want to ensure shoppers are happy. • Small businesses, since they are not beholden to corporate oversight in terms of what they sell, have greater flexibility. That allows them to offer a diverse product selection. • Small business owners often live nearby, and they’re the people you see in town, schools and elsewhere in the local community. Many consumers are comforted to know they’re supporting their neighbors, especially during the holiday season.
