LAX GOALIE SIGNS - East Islip High School senior Lee-Ann Salim signed a National Letter of Intent on November 15th to play for the Blue Hose girls lacrosse team of Presbyterian College in South Carolina. Salim, a standout goaltender, has been playing lacrosse since third grade and cites the East Islip coaching staff as important to her success. While at Presbyterian, founded in 1880 and located in Clinton, S.C., Salim plans to study physical therapy. of my own and – dare I even say it – cook?!? Perhaps not. We wouldn’t want to be too ambitious! But still, the season will be exciting. It is a time for establishing new traditions and carrying on old ones. For reconnecting with those we have lost touch with over the last year. For spending quality time with those who mean the most. It is time, time we cannot get enough of. However you choose to spend it, may you enjoy it wholeheartedly.

At its monthly business meeting on November 14th, the East Islip Board of Education honored the combined efforts of staff and students in East Islip Middle School’s family and consumer science classes, students from Connetquot, John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools, the East Islip/ Dowling School-Business Partnership, and parent volunteer and master tailor Vicente Vasquez,

who together created a special Cancer Awareness Quilt in honor of World Cancer Day. Presenting the finished quilt were middle school student government representatives Madison Lane and Maggie Ruland, middle schools FACS representatives Erin Meagher and Stephanie Milito, Connetquot student Sarah Parker, JFK student Molly Zec and RCK student Reese Clark.

Also in attendance were teachers who participated in the quilt project – including Connetquot’s Wendy Frees, JFK’s Donna Marshall, RCK’s Francisca Tomasello, East Islip Middle School’s Dani Shehada and Dawn Ann Zeffiro, and middle school librarian Valerie Ware – as well as Vasquez, who was given the quilt as a final gift for his volunteerism.

Tis’ the season for outdoing ourselves – in every way… for feasting for what seems like days on end, for running up the credit cards on gifts for all our friends and loved ones – and occasionally ourselves – for “decking the halls” with extravagant garlands and twinkling lights and precious ornaments… There are many who detest this time of year, for precisely these reasons. But I love it.

Kennedy Elementary School’s celebration, held in the Cafetorium on the morning of November 8th, beginning with a soulful rendition of “God Bless America” sung by Principal Aileen O’Rourke. The fourth- and fifth-grade chorus, directed by James Santoro, sang “In Service of Our Country” and “Thank a Vet.” Other performances followed from first-graders (“Thank You, Soldiers”), third-graders (“It’s a Veteran Who Salutes the Flag”), fifth-graders (“Thank a Vet”) and JFK’s band, directed by Ronald Fox, who played “Patriotic Bits & Pieces” by Michael Storey. The final celebration

that afternoon was at Connetquot Elementary, presented by the school’s fifth-graders, who spoke eloquently about the meaning of Veterans Day. Orchestra students directed by DeMaria played “America the Beautiful” and “Yankee Doodle,” while music and chorus teacher John Murphy led the students in several musical numbers, including his own arrangement of “The Fifty States Rap.” “We were all so proud of our performers and thankful that so many veterans attended,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “Our fifthgraders enthusiastically participated, dancing and singing while learning the true meaning of being grateful for the opportunity and privilege to meet our veterans and to live in this magnificent United States of America.”

Senioritis

For decades, high school seniors have been feeling the pressure to succeed from all angles. Towards the middle of their final year of high school, many of these same students develop what is commonly known to be Senioritis. Senioritis can be defined as a general apathy towards school work as the result of continued exposure to stress, anxiety and pressure. What does this actually mean? Seniors basically stop caring about their courses! For nearly 100% of those students affected by the issue, Senioritis results in falling asleep during class. This nap-time results in detentions, failing and absences. All of the stress

that comes with waiting for your SAT score, applying to colleges and hoping for an acceptance letter seems to just fade into the background as the final months tick down. These last few months misleadingly seem to be a little downtime and a resting period between actual high school and college. After slapping their future college’s bumper sticker on their car, many students feel that their struggle is over. These students have done it, they have completed their journey. Not quite; getting accepted is just the first half of the battle. You can’t let your grades slip! Some colleges create the stipulation that even if one’s Grade Point Average

drops a single letter grade, the acceptance will prove to be null, void and ultimately invalid. This continued expectation is harder still for those students that aced the SAT’s, assumed a loaded schedule and basically busted their humps their entire academic career. The temptation to slack is so great that even the most promising students have been known to fall. This pseudo-sickness has been even known to travel between groups of close friends, as many times the influence is drastic. So what does this mean for your future high school senior? Do not catch Senioritis! The only known cure for Senioritis is a phenomenon known as Graduation.

In observance of National Teen Personal Safety Awareness Week, the Town of Islip Youth Bureau is helping to spread the word about the dangers of texting while driving, an epidemic that is rapidly spreading across America. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading killer of teens in New York State and texting and distracted driving is a factor in 8 out of 10 accidents. The Islip Youth Bureau is distributing Wrist Band/ Phone Guards empowering High School students to be safe TEXT FREE DRIVERS. “Motor vehicle accidents are the leading killer among teenagers in New York State,” noted Councilman Anthony Senft, Jr. “And texting and driving is a significant factor in 8 out 10 accidents. We commend high school students who realize and appreciate the serious consequences of texting and driving. Texting and driving is dangerous to everyone in the car and everyone else on the road.” High School students will be able to get free “DNT TXT N DRV” wrist band/phone guards at their schools. The bands, which can be worn or wrapped around a cell phone to block texting, will serve

as reminders of the dangers involved. Even a quick text message can be deadly. In addition to the bands, students are encouraged to take the Text Free Driving Pledge. Some statistics

The student council at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School raised more than $500 for Long Island Cares in just five hours at a Rainbow Looms of Love sale on November 9th. Taking time on a cold Saturday, these determined students created Rainbow Loom bracelets and sold them on the front lawn of the school. The objective of the fundraiser was to keep the student council involved in helping others. “The sale not only taught the children how much work it is to follow through with a community project, but also how rewarding it can

be to do something for other people,” explained Patrice Mercurio, a teacher at Timber Point and fourthand fifth-grade adviser to the student council. “We decided to donate to Long Island Cares because it is a local charity that helps fellow Long Islanders in need. People need help, especially during the holidays.” The council members planned the sale, made the bracelets, conducted advertising, asked their peers for help, collected student donations, made banners and signs to use during the sale, and handed out fliers which were sent

home with each student at Timber Point. They also worked the tables at the sale, selling bracelets for $1 each to numerous customers including other students, teachers, parents, neighbors and even Board of Education trustee Kim Phillips. “The children of the student council – along with many students who donated their time and bracelets; parents who donated their time, brought down pizza and hot chocolate, and made donations to the cause; and teachers who drove to the school to donate in person – worked so very hard for this fundraiser,” said Mercurio. “I am so proud of each and every person involved.” Mercurio is planning a tour later this year for the students at the Long Island Cares facility, a trip that will add another layer of meaning to their efforts. “I know that these children learned so much during this experience,” she said. “Hopefully it will serve as a stepping stone toward lives rich with community service in their future.”

Lighting Of The Windmill In conjunction with the ongoing observance of the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Shinnecock Hills campus, Stony Brook Southampton will host the traditional holiday lighting of the windmill and reception in Chancellors Hall on Friday, December 6th, from 5 to 7 p.m. The 301 year-old landmark underwent repairs last year following damage from Hurricane Irene in 2011. Now fully repaired, the yoke that supports its blades was cracked, and the windmill had been without its crown. This year’s Windmill

Lighting program, free and open to the public, will feature tours of the new Marine Sciences Center, the Doctor of Physical Therapy Labs (DPT), and the iconic windmill, named this year a Literary Landmark. The festivities will also include music from the Stony Brook University Pep Band, an appearance by Seawolves mascot Wolfie, seasonal refreshments, a caricaturist, balloon artist, and crafts for children. Following the Windmill Lighting and reception, the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) will

present a lecture on the New York State Resiliency Institute for Storms and Emergencies (NYS RISE) in Duke Lecture Hall at 7:30 p.m. The presentation will highlight the goals, objectives, and activities of NYS RISE and will examine the role that SoMAS will play in ensuring that NY’s coastal communities and ecosystems are strengthened to protect their health and viability in the event of future storm devastation.
