For Them, Christmas Joy This Year Means Fighting Hunger

CHRISTMAS JOY THIS YEAR MEANS FIGHTING HUNGER - On Saturday, December 5 from 9:00 to 2:00 St. Mark’s Episcopal Church will host it’s monthly outdoor drive-by food drop at the church, 754 Montauk Highway, Islip. The food drive is a joint effort with Islip Rotary. For information, please call the St. Mark’s office and ask for Irene, 631-581-4950. One day the shortfall was so great I was afraid we wouldn’t be able to support all of our locations, but days before St. Mark’s had a food drop which enabled us to continue.” In November, St. Mark’s and Islip Rotary filled 175 boxes to send to God’s Provisions and it’s estimated that 25,000 items were collected. “It might have even been more, “ said Organizer Irene Ross. “At one point, we just stopped counting.” “We want to be sure no one goes to bed hungry,” said St. Mark’s Rector and longtime Rotarian, The Very Reverend Richard E. Simpson, “In this time of pandemic, food insecurity is increasing, not shrinking. Rotary’s motto is “service above self.” When Astrid Fidelia, the Islip chapter’s president heard about this, she immediately mobilized everyone. They spread the word to members and to other Rotary chapters, including Bay Shore, Brentwood and Sayville among others, and they volunteer on the day of the

drives. Ross added that they are often recognized by the community surrounding the church. “In fact, some even wait for us! It’s a serious subject, but we try to keep it light and joyful with contests and challenges, kids and special waves; in December, we’re going all out for Christmas with lights, decorations, music and even a Santa. We want people to keep coming back.” The St. Mark’s food drop has also gotten community support, including from Tula Kitchen who recently donated a gift card for the winner of the September challenge. Duncan Weir, a congregant who’s also on the design team of Gorilla Wrap, creates beautiful, eyecatching banners that are hung well before the event, for those to see as they walk or jog past or stop at a traffic light, as a kind of Save the Date.” Volunteers will be at the tables in front of the church doors on St. Mark’s Lane. As always, no one needs to get out of cars; pop the trunk and volunteers will grab the food. Masks and social distancing are asked for those who do choose to get out of cars. WING’S RED RIBBON WEEK - Red Ribbon Week was recently celebrated at Islip’s Wing Elementary School, with each student getting the chance to decorate a red ribbon with words or pictures to show how they make smart and healthy choices in their everyday lives. Throughout the week, Wing students discussed and engaged in activities encouraging them to make good choices and had a fun time participating in themed dress-up days. On Saturday, December 5 from 9:00 to 2:00 St. Mark’s Episcopal Church will host it’s monthly outdoor driveby food drop at the church, 754 Montauk Highway, Islip, with the doors facing St. Mark’s Lane. The food drive is a joint effort with Islip Rotary. The nonsectarian food drives, which began in July, will, as always, send all food donations to God’s Provisions, an affiliate of Long Island Cares. God’s Provisions supports 25 locations by distributing pre-boxed meals and bags of groceries to church pantries, shelters and senior communities. Director Dana Jahn said Long Island Cares provides 60% of the shelf stable resources. “In fact, they obtained a grant for us to do direct food purchase,” she said, adding that the organization also gets support from churches, local stores and community sources. There is significant support from St. Mark’s, where both parishioners and non-parishioners make food and monetary donations. At one point, there were eight people who would go out on a regular basis to shop, sort and volunteer to put bags together.

The Andrew McMorris Memorial Walkathon Rescheduled The Andrew McMorris Memorial Walkathon will be held on Friday, November 27th after being cancelled due to the initial outbreak of the Corona Virus. The scenic trail walk will be

through the beautiful and picturesque Baiting Hollow Scout Camp located at 1774 Sound Avenue, Calverton, NY and will include a tour of the beautiful McMorris Lodge being built at the

Camp. Registrations and sponsorship information is available at: https:// www.sccbsa.org/ walk2020. The McMorris Family, along with the Suffolk County Council of the Boy Scouts of America are hosting this Walkathon to raise the funds needed to complete the McMorris

Lodge, which is under construction at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp in memory of Andrew Mc Morris. Andrew is the Boy Scout, who was killed by a drunk driver, while hiking the Greenbelt Trail with his Boy Scout Troop 161 in September 2018. Several other Scouts were severely

While Black Friday and Cyber Monday are some of the more widely known retail holidays, Giving Tuesday is becoming pretty popular in its own right. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday helps raise awareness that charity is an important component of the holiday season. The nonprofit services company Neon says nearly one-third of all annual giving occurs in December, with 12 percent happening over the final three days of the year. Giving Tuesday is positioned right in the midst of the most popular time for charitable giving. What makes Giving Tuesday unique is that it is largely fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. The day was actually created

by the 92nd Street Y, a cultural center in New York City that has been instrumental in bringing diverse groups of people together with the goals of giving back through service. The 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation came together in 2012 to help form a day that was focused on the generosity of giving during the holiday season. Thus, Giving Tuesday was born. Technology and social media play a large role in uniting people for Giving Tuesday. Founding partners included Mashable, a technology website, Skype and Cisco, but the success of Giving Tuesday is thanks in large part to the general public, who have both spread the word and made their own contributions to charity. In 2017, Giving

Tuesday soared to new heights when technology mogul Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, announced their foundation would match up to $2 million in donations to Giving Tuesday fundraisers started on Facebook. Facebook similarly waived its 5 percent fee for U.S.-based nonprofits all day long. The global Giving Tuesday movement helped raise more than $300 million online across more than 150 countries in 2017 alone. This year, the Giving Tuesday organization is poised to top their numbers and continue to improve upon the more than 46,000 participating organizations involved in their charitable efforts. For East Islip’s elementary schools, Nov. 9 marked the first day that hybrid learning students were back in the building five days a week. To help make the day extra special, and welcome returning remote students, Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School voted on Election Day for a Spirit Day theme for Nov. 9, in which

“Pajama Day” won by a landslide. “Our students came to school cozy, ready to learn and ready to have fun,” said Principal Janet Jones. “They did an outstanding job entering and maneuvering in the classrooms and throughout the building. RCK’s students have taken this new normal in stride.

They are strong, caring and smart. While chatting with the students who were on the lunch line, one fourth grader told me, ‘I love RCK. Today is like the old days in third grade. It’s great to have all my friends back. I really love this school.’ It is hard for me to believe we have not had a full building since March 13.”

Christmas Tree Project Faces Explosive Need In 10th Year for us, that it’s a thrill to be doing it again.” “In this season of giving,” CBS news correspondent Alex Wagner explained last year, “One Colorado couple never expected that donating their old Christmas tree would lead to a heartwarming annual tradition.” Watch. They were contacted by 20 people in less than a few hours telling them their stories and vying for that one tree, that Michelle and David decided they had to try to meet the demand. They told their friends, and soon the word spread. The story touched a nerve in the Colorado

Springs community, and hundreds of people contacted The Christmas Tree Project to donate and request trees, as well as volunteer to help. By the time the first season it was all over, more than 300 trees had been given away. In a world troubled economically and divided politically, it may even seem a bit surprising. “It’s been overwhelming to see the vast reservoirs of energy and generosity that exist today when you simply offer people a chance to become involved and contribute, even in a small way,” added the Feins. “And it’s incredibly humbling to see the gratitude small acts of kindness produce.” The 2010 ad David and Michelle Fein placed on Craigslist for a single tree, brought responses including:

“I have 6 kids and no tree…we would like it if it’s still available.” “If this tree is still available, I sure could use it. My kids are 6 and 9. We won’t have a lot under it this year but there will be something there.” “My husband broke his leg 5 weeks ago and we are really struggling.
