n recognition of Red Ribbon Week at the end of October, seventhand eighth-graders at Islip Middle School heard Stephen Hill from Speak Sobriety share his story of substance abuse. Hill discussed his personal struggles while highlighting the benefits of living a clean and sober life. After the assembly, Hill connected with many students individually, answering their questions regarding the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

Earning Eagle Honors

Michael Lawrence Grey successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on September 28th, officially making him the 69th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip, and Islip Terrace. Michael’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Saturday, December 17th, starting at 10 a.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timber Point Road in East Islip. Michael is currently a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “Road to Eagle”, Michael has served Troop 205 as Troop Guide, Assistant Patrol Leader, and Den Chief with Pack 205. Michael has had many unique Scouting experiences, including attending and participating in National Boy Scout Jamboree in 2013 at the Bechtel Summit High Adventure Base in West Virginia, was a summer camper for three seasons at Camp Wakpominee in the Adirondack Mountains, Ft. Ann, NY, and was a weekend camper for many Troop 205 campouts on and off Long Island, New York. Michael was also elected

by his fellow Scouts and is a member of the Order of the Arrow – Scouting’s honorary camping society. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. Michael has actually earned a total of 26 merit badges. The Service Project that Michael developed, planned, and constructed with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Great River, NY – demolishing existing cement steps and installing a handicapped-accessible concrete ramp for entry into the Church with railings on both sides, along with refurbishing and rebuilding three benches on the Church grounds. As Michael reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “Achieving the Eagle Scout Rank will help me in successfully being admitted to the

college of my choice.” Michael went on to say, “I’d like to follow my interest in the US Military, preferably the US Army – by first attending some form of military school like the Virginia Military Institute.” Michael is a Junior at St. Dominics High School, where he received Second Honors in 2015 and has been awarded an Academic Scholarship. Michael has been the St. Dominics Chess Club Coordinator this academic year and has been on his High School Football and Junior Varsity Soccer teams. He has played sports out of school on the East Islip Power Soccer Intertown Team from 2011 through this year, where he has also served as Game Captain. Providing community service has been part of Michael’s life – not only within Troop 205 Eagle Scout Service Projects that he has actively participated, but also a “Just for Kicks” volunteer – with the East Islip Soccer Program for Youngsters with Developmental Needs from 2014 through this year. In 2014, Michael was granted the James Picken Award for excellence in volunteer service while at Grace Day School. Michael was also an honors student while at Grace Day School in 2013 and 2014 and a member of the National Junior Honor Society while a student at St. Peters by the Sea, Bay Shore, in 2012. Michael is the son of Lawrence Grey and Dr. Kathleen Frost of East Islip, and siblings to Brother Stephen, Sister Elizabeth Kiviat, Brotherin-Law Nick Kiviat, and newborn Nephew Benjamin Lawrence Kiviat. Michael’s Father, Larry, is an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 205 and coActivity of the Troop’s successful summer camp program for many years.

Coastal Cleanup The 2016 International Coastal Cleanup came to a successful conclusion recently, with volunteers around the world providing data on waterway litter to the Ocean Conservancy in Washington. The information compiled during this annual

environmental effort is used to identify pollution trends. Keep Islip Clean sponsored fifteen groups for the event. These volunteers gathered information about the litter they removed from marine environments,

including beaches along the south shore stretching from West Islip to Bayport, Orowoc Creek, Champlin Creek, Knapp Lake and Lake Ronkonkoma. The ICC highlights the negative, far reaching impact that litter has on the environment.

COASTAL CLEANUP - One group of International Coastal Cleanup volunteers collected data from Orowoc Creek in Islip. The majority of litter found at this location where cans, bottles, food wrappers, cigarette butts and plastic bags.

Pair Plays at SCMEA Liam Godbout and Sam Martinez, band students at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School, participated in the Suffolk County Music Educators Association’s 36th annual Day of Tuba

and Euphonium, held on October 28th at Smithtown High School East. The two young musicians participated in rehearsals and workshops and performed in a massed ensemble concert with

more than 300 elementary, middle and high school tuba and euphonium students along with teachers from across Suffolk County.

Big Duck Lighting Ceremony The Suffolk County Parks Department, in cooperation with the Town of Southampton Parks Department will host the annual Big Duck Holiday Lighting Ceremony on Wednesday, November 30th, at 7 p.m. This year’s festivities will include live entertainment including a duck carol sing-a-long led by the Riverhead Middle School Show Choir, a visit from the LI Ducks Mascot “Quackerjack,” and of course the ever-anticipated arrival of Santa Claus courtesy of the Flanders Fire Department. “The lighting of the Big Duck has become a tradition for Suffolk residents as an official kick-off for the holiday season,” said Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone. The Big Duck Store will be open for the evening, so you can pick up some eggstraspecial holiday gifts. The Big Duck is located on Route 24 in Flanders, one mile East of the Riverhead Traffic Circle. Of Fuzz & Refurbishing What better way to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday than with a column by yours truly, everyone’s favorite fish. It’s been quite some time since my last contribution, and readers have been writing in to inquire as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing and the like. Well, I’m still swimming; perhaps a little more frayed and frazzled of late, but such is life. I’m happy to report that my Human finally got on board with the whole concept of heating my suite, making for a nice cozy atmosphere to spend the chillier months. You know us tropical fish – anything under 78º and I’m looking for a sweater.

Speaking of, I seemed to be growing my own little fur coat of sorts over the last week or so, as my fins began sprouting tiny tufts of white fuzz. Apparently, this is not supposed to happen, and so my Human decided to overhaul my entire tank and redecorate with new gravel and a pretty little – emphasis on little – plant. My favorite feature of all, though, would have to be the tiny “betta hammock” which now hangs from the side, essentially a leaf attached to a suction cup. I suppose this was designed to replace my former, much larger, luxurious plant which I used to use as a pillow of sorts. I must say, though, it’s quite

inferior. Too straight, too shiny and slippery…but the suction cup, that’s the greatest. How I do love to sit perched atop it, resting my weary fins after a long day of swimming laps. After a few days of fishy antibiotics, my little fuzz problem seems to have gone away. Now, I patiently wait for my beautiful blue fins to regenerate so I can be back to my old spectacular self. ‘Til then, enjoy your turkey and your football, your shopping and your decorating, and stay tuned for my next words of wisdom. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy signing off on behalf of his Human. Second-grade students at St. Mary School have been working on STEM (science, technology, engineer and math) projects for Halloween. One project involved making a catapult to see how far the candy pumpkin could be thrown. The

students then used tape measures to measure the distance using centimeters. Another project was to build a candy tower. The students worked in groups to design the tallest tower they could build without it toppling over. The final project was

to design and build a “spider web” bridge using yarn. The bridge had to hold as many connecting cubes as possible without collapsing. Credit for these projects goes to Brooke Brown for her ideas on Teacher Pay Teacher.

East Islip High School senior and All-County softball star Courtney Greene signed a National Letter of Intent on November 10th with Molloy College. She will attend the Rockville Centre college next fall, pitching for the Lions, and plans to major in accounting. “The business program is highly talked about,” Greene said regarding her selection. “I met with the dean of business, and that drew me to the program. There’s a lot of opportunity there for me.” A starting pitcher and first baseman on the varsity squad since eighthgrade, Greene earned AllConference honors as a freshman and sophomore, and All-County and AllConference as a junior. Other accolades include being named to the All-

Long Island first team last year and a NFSA Academic All American in 2014. Greene also played travel ball with LI Sudden Impact Gold, earning a 6-0 fall pitching record under coach Bill Havdouglas. She had a remarkable season last year, leading the Lady Redmen in five consecutive victories to reach the Suffolk County final. Greene won 17 games and set a new school record in striking out 176 batters in 155 innings. She notched her 500th career strikeout this season as well, finishing the year with 518, another school record. In a memorable semifinal battle against Eastport-South Manor, she pitched 12 innings, struck out 13 batters and hit a home run that cut the lead in half. On offense, Greene batted .327 (.375 in the playoffs) and hit five home runs (including four playoff homers), 32 hits and 27 RBI. “I made so many memories with this team,” Greene said. “I’m upset it’s my last year but it’s been a lot of fun.” Going into her senior year, she is East Islip’s alltime strikeout leader with

525, second in RBI with 58 and second in doubles with 16. She also stands second in wins, needing only seven this spring to become the Lady Redmen’s all-time leader. “Courtney has blossomed from a shy, timid eighth-grade varsity pitcher into a confident, reliable and mature senior athlete,” said East Islip’s softball coach Jason McGowan. “She has put in the work on and off the field these last four years as a varsity player, and led a tremendously young team to the Suffolk County AA finals last spring. As our pitcher, she pitched every game and won against the best softball teams in the county through our playoff run leading up to the county finals. She is one of our captains, and does a great job leading our younger players. Speaking on Sobriety

In recognition of Red Ribbon Week at the end of October, seventhand eighth-graders at Islip Middle School heard Stephen Hill from Speak Sobriety share his story of substance abuse. Hill discussed his personal struggles while

highlighting the benefits of living a clean and sober life. “Mr. Hill also discussed issues of peer pressure, bullying, anxiety and depression,” said school social worker Shari Pennington. “Our students and staff were very moved

by his story.” After the assembly, Hill connected with many students individually, answering their questions regarding the dangers of experimenting with drugs and alcohol.

Entrance Transformed A terrific transformation has taken place at Islip Middle School with the addition of new gardens to beautify the main entrance. The project, two years in the making, was led by special education teacher Suzanne Lange, who has pulled double duty as the chairperson of the middle school’s Standards of Excellence Committee for the past few years. “Suzanne was able to harness the energy of many entities to see this project come to fruition,” said Dr. Timothy Martin, the principal. “This was no easy task when you take budgeting, clubs,

volunteers and timelines into account.”’ Taking advantage of favorable weather, a creative coalition – including SOE Committee members; KIC Club, student government, art and technology students; and the buildings and grounds crew – worked during the course of the two months to plant the two new garden beds to enhance the school’s curb appeal. Retired math teacher Barbara Knoth and her horticulturist husband Bob volunteered to spearhead the garden display. An assortment of purple asters and gold

mums, as well as native Long Island grasses and shrubs, now adorn the building facade. The native plants will be incorporated into an outdoor learning environment and living classroom. According to Dr. Martin, the garden project is not finished, but is a work in progress seeking to grow and expand as the creativity continues. Expressing his excitement with the makeover, he said, “There are all kinds of first impressions, and when people approach the doors of Islip Middle School, they should get the impression that we care.”

Redmen 5K

East Islip High School’s varsity softball team competed in the East Islip Athletic Booster Club’s annual Redmen 5K race at Heckscher State Park on November 6th. The event serves to raise funds for the five scholarships awarded

by the Booster Club each year to graduating seniors. Sophomore Allison Dell’Orto had the fastest time on the team, finishing the route in just over 26 minutes. Six-year-old Jayde McGowan, the team manager, was the youngest

finisher, completing the race in just over 34 minutes. Several team members who were unable to run volunteered their time directing the runners during the race.

The first Northwell Health Great South Bay Run on October 1st had more than 700 participants race through the streets of Bay Shore and raised $1,689 for a group focused on better health care and health education in the Town of Islip. The money raised will go toward Southside Hospital’s Community Outreach and Health Education Council (COHEC), which includes members of the hospital as well as local community groups, faith organizations and schools working to improve health care and health education in Central Islip, Brentwood and Bay Shore. The group has been in existence for about a year and creates and manages events such as free health care screenings and medical career days. “The COHEC group has been doing such amazing work to reach out into these communities to help ensure everyone is able to make good healthcare decisions for themselves and their families,” said Donna Moravick, NP, executive director of Southside Hospital. “We appreciate the funds the run raised for this group, which will help further its mission and reach.” The event, which included 5K and 10K races along with a half marathon, was previously sponsored by Entenmann’s. Spooky Success Guided by teachers Kaitlyn Rooney and Christine Sheridan, Islip Middle School’s student government hosted its first Halloween Spooktacular, a safe Halloween event for the district’s elementary school students, on October 27th. Hundreds of children trick or treated and excitedly participated

in various games and crafts. “We were overwhelmed by the amount of Islip families that participated,” said Assistant Principal James Cameron. “Based on the success this year, we are hoping this event becomes a new tradition in Islip.” Chad Walerstein,

principal at Maude S. Sherwood Elementary School, said, “I heard a lot of positive feedback from families. We had a book fair that night, and many parents came here with their children after the middle school event. attend Pace University in Westchester and Renwick will attend Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania. “Our district is extremely proud of these student-athletes who have achieved at the highest level,” said Athletic

Director Bob Panariello. “Their dedication and commitment has been recognized by their coaches and peers and has provided them an opportunity to continue their collegiate careers.”

Frederick Marshall has always had a passion for music. He was in the Merchant Marine Band as a young man, which led to studio musician work and becoming a drummer in the “Big Bands” of the Era. When he retired from music, he focused that same passion into

learning how to paint using watercolors from books, classes and his wife Thelma. Throughout his retirement years, he became an accomplished watercolorist. Frederick is now a resident of Momentum at South Bay Rehabilitation & Nursing,

Selfless Soccer Honorees At a November 3rd business meeting, East Islip’s Board of Education and visiting New York State Sen. Tom Croci recognized the high school’s varsity boys soccer team, captain Adam Raso and coach Raymond Lang for sportsmanship, presenting

them with a certificate of appreciation. At the end of a hotly contested game against Half Hollow Hills West on September 8th, a Hills West player cramped in both calves. Despite losing the game 1-0, Raso stayed with the Hills athlete as

the whistle sounded, until the trainer could arrive. His unselfish act prompted a congratulatory message to East Islip from Hills West Coach Doug Gannon. The Redmen finished the season 7-7-2.
