Home vs. Sand Historically, Fire Island has been a place where Long Islanders could spend a summer afternoon. Unfortunately, following Superstorm Sandy, Fire Island is not the carefree place that it once was. Even still, Fire Island is an unparalleled paradise. As a longtime resident of the little barrier beach, I can attest to the idea that this tiny strip of beach is more than a vacation spot. Fire Island is a destination full of history, hope and relaxation. Unfortunately, the government is trying to change all of that. Recently, there have been talks about the implementation of eminent domain on the island. Eminent domain is the government’s power to seize private property for public betterment. This may seem like a viable option for the hurting island, but in actuality, it would be catastrophic. In a mass buyout of homes, the Army Corps of Engineers, in conjunction with the United States Government, wants to create a massive dune that would not only block the view

This dune may seem unprecedented, but it is most certainly not. There have been numerous attempts to block the destructive power of the Atlantic Ocean. All of these previous dune projects have failed to the merciless waves. Millions of dollars have been lost trying to enact this exact same plan. What would make this trial any different? There is little hope that the dune would survive in the long term, and its price would be excessive. Hundreds of lifelong Fire Island natives like myself would be displaced for a simple mound of sand. There is no scenario in which our beloved Fire Island should be put through this. I have stated it before and I will continue to until someone listens; protect our homes, not our sand!

With a great sense of pride and admiration, students at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools once again honored outstanding veterans from the East Islip community at the two schools’ Veterans Day celebrations on November 7th. At RCK, the halls were

and showed true sportsmanship. After the handshake and during the postgame celebration, the Wyandanch coach spoke to the Islip Bucs, telling them that this was his hardest game ever played in 36 years of coaching. It was a true complement to the team! The Islip Buccaneers have been coached for the past six years by Jason Vitale and his staff. Congratulations to the boys for their determination and hard work!

The Art League of Long Island is pleased to announce the winners of the first part of their 59th Annual Members’ Exhibition, showing through November 30th. Exhibition juror Lisa Chalif, curator of the Heckscher Museum of Art, selected nine works of art out of the more than 112 pieces on display in the League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery.
