On Sunday, November 8th, Long Island’s educators, treatment professionals, and community members gathered in recognition of substance abuse recovery at the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence’s 26th Annual Peter Sweisgood Breakfast. This family-focused community event was held at the IBEW Local 25 Hall in Hauppauge, and featured powerful stories of personal struggles with addiction, as well as highlighting the efforts of addiction service providers and advocates for changes to policies affecting those suffering from substance abuse disorders. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) honored two individuals whose outstanding accomplishments have shaped public policy, expanded public awareness, enhanced treatment options, and help many individuals address growing drug and alcohol problems. The honorees include Community Champion Bruce W. Both, President, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1500 and Fisher of Men honoree, Anthony Rizzuto, Provider Relations, Seafield Center and Executive Director of F.I.S.T. LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW,CASAC summed up the event, “Each year, this gathering is an important opportunity for the Long Island recovery community to reflect on both our victories and challenges of the past year, as well as to rally around the crucial issues for the coming year. Icons of Freedom East Islip High School juniors and seniors recently attended the “Icons of Freedom II: Conscientious Objectors and Human Rights in American Democracy” symposium at Stony Brook University. The October 14th event was hosted by PATCH Project and
the New York State Bar Association. Under the direction of Dr. Sara Anderson, East Islip’s director of humanities, and two social studies teachers, Victor Davis and Daniel Falkman, students listened to and interacted with the symposium’s keynote speakers, Mary
Beth Tinker (litigant in the Supreme Court case Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District) and Karen Korematsu (daughter of Fred Korematsu, litigant in Korematsu v. United States).

create fliers that promote good manners. “My students read Mr. Dolan’s list and discussed the importance of being on time and prepared, not only in school, but in life in general,” said Avella. Gaining valuable
experience in desktop publishing and graphic communications, the students learned how to use computers as tools for design. The fliers were later put on display in a case near Principal Mark Bernard’s office.

By: Frank Fernandez Long ago, I saw a structure, unusual in its shape and size. Imposing. Hulking, I needed a closer look. Then I noticed it.
Inconspicuous. No one had even noticed a small crack had formed. I knew that it was only a matter of Time until it would burst. Full of pride, I thought I could hold it back. Little did I know, the fear. Many have tried, but none have succeeded, holding back the dam of Time.

The crack slowly spread, and I knew not what to do. But the crack still grew. Larger and larger, Hopeless in all proposals, I turned tail and ran. Hell hath no fury stronger than the man who runs. Runs away from Time. Callously spreading, Stuck in its dateless decay. Everything consumed. There was no more choice. In the end, I surrendered, surrendered to Time. When will all men learn, never to stand in the way of the wrath of Time!

Budget Adopted Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter announced today Islip’s 2016 Operating Budget has been unanimously adopted by all the members of the Islip Town Board with few changes. “I am very happy to
report there were very few changes to the proposed budget presented a couple of weeks ago and the Town Board has unanimously adopted Islip’s 2016 Operating Budget,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
“In addition to adopting a fiscally conservative, efficient and transparent budget, we have all worked very hard to provide Islip residents with the information they need to understand where their tax dollars go. Residents
may view the details about this budget on the town’s website,” Supervisor Carpenter added. The Town of Islip’s 2016 Adopted Operating Budget, which reflects a very modest increase of 1.54% over the 2015 budget,
is available on the town website at www.islipny.gov. Some of the services and expenses covered by the Operating Budget include: Administrative, Assessment, Building and Grounds Maintenance, Vehicle Maintenance,

East Islip High School’s varsity gymnastics squad was recognized as undefeated League III champions for 2015, closing out a sparkling season to remember, filled with teamwork. “This year’s team began the season with a focus on daily improvement through hard work, dedication and pride in their individual and team achievements,” said coach Dennis Jones. “The ‘team’ aspect of athletics is extremely important to me as a coach, and I pass this on to the girls on a daily
basis.” En route to a championship season, the 18-member team finished with a spotless 6-0 record in their league, led by four seniors – Jackie DeRosa, co-captains Melissa Marra and Danielle Pafundi, and Vayle Suarino. “Each member of the team had an opportunity to compete and contribute to our undefeated season,” said Jones. “I am extremely proud of all the girls, their accomplishments, their team cohesiveness, and our captains, who worked hard to always bring everyone

together for a common goal.” “I’ve been a part of the varsity gymnastics team for many years and it has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life,” said Pafundi. “This team has helped me grow immensely as a person. I know next year, these girls are going to do incredible things.”
Serving as a captivating and creative celebration of the school’s fifth-grade reading and writing curriculum, students at Islip’s Maude S. Sherwood Elementary School participated in the annual Biography Day event on October 30th, researching, dressing up and acting as various historical and current figures. The students began the day by presenting
their chosen Biography Day characters to their classmates, followed by a schoolwide parade for the other grade levels. Last was a “Living Museum,” where the fifth-graders were on interactive display, explaining their biographical characters in detail to their visiting families and other educators. As these proud family members arrived and

departed at the front entrance, they wrote supportive messages on the school’s Biography Day graffiti wall as a testament to the great work that was done by the students. “Biography Day was such a testament to our terrific school community of staff, students and families,” said Sherwood’s principal, Dr. Maureen Martin.
