Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is n e e d e d , sponsor programs that p r o m o t e self-sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.
There are many ways that individuals just like you can get involved with Long Island Cares. You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Please email licvolunteer@ licares.org for more information. Additionally, they are holding their annual Adopt-a-Family Thanksgiving Food Drive! This project involves others to volunteer their time to gather and bag items for families in need so they can have a filling Thanksgiving. This is the perfect opportunity for families, groups and students to get involved in their community. Long Island Cares has a goal of reaching
5,000 families and they need your help to reach that goal! They ask that you provide the following specific items in order to provide a Long Island family with a full Thanksgiving meal: - 4 cans of vegetables - 4 cans of fruit - 1 can of pumpkin or pie filling - 1 box/bag of stuffing - 1 box of mashed potato mix - 1 jar/can/packet of gravy - 1 can of cranberry sauce - 1 box of dessert mix (cake/cookie/ muffin) - OPTIONAL: Turkey (please put in a separate bag if you wish to donate this) Donations should be double bagged or in a reusable bag and delivered to their office located at 10 Davids Drive Hauppauge, NY 11788. All donations must be delivered no later than November 20th and must be dropped off between the hours of 8:30AM and 3:30PM Monday - Friday. Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. He continued: “Yet another person told me once that he came specifically for the raffles and lunch. And one year, a group of kids dressed up in period costumes and sang Christmas carols.” This year, December 7, there will also be two exciting concerts: At 10:30, there will be a kids sing-a-long, with a special (surprise) guest appearance. At 2:00 pm, get into the Christmas Spirit with some fun
music at a concert by Long Island reSound Handbell Ensemble, who will get you in the Christmas spirit with their performance. The decades-old Christmas Bazaar is organized by ECW (Episcopal Church Women). “It’s so much fun and helps to raise money for the church, and that filters down to the community. For me, the spirit of giving is what Christmas is all about,” said Helen Selgrad, long-time parishioner and former president, St Mark’s ECW. Who knows? Maybe even Santa will show up.
A Purpose In Pink Islip High School recently hosted its annual “pink game” volleyball fundraiser to support breast cancer awareness, with proceeds going to the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition. Both the varsity
and junior varsity teams swept West Babylon 3-0 during the games held at the school’s decorated gym, while students held bake sales and sported pink apparel. “The “pink game” is
now an Islip volleyball tradition,” said Natalie DeSena. “It an amazing opportunity to give back to the Islip community and special cause year after year.”

Urgent Call For Donors New York’s blood supply has never been lower, and New York Blood Center (NYBC) is urgently calling for donors. There has been a significant decline in regular blood donors, and the region’s supply has reached critically low levels. In order to maintain a safe blood supply, a sevenday inventory of all blood types must be continually replenished. Right now, reserves are below that
minimum. October has always been the month to recover, to take a breath and know our blood supply will rebound after the tough summer months. Unfortunately, this year, that is not the case. Our region’s blood supply has never been lower. This critical blood shortage stems from decline in donor base and increased demand for blood.
We’re hoping that you will share this urgent message to encourage folks to come out to donate. That little extra action can make the difference in the lives of the patients we fight for together. The Historical Society of Islip Hamlet will be hosting its 26th annual Holiday House Tour on Sunday, December 8, 2019 (rain, shine, snow), from 12:00 - 5:00 p.m. Several historically and/or architecturally interesting homes will be decorated for the holidays as tour guides in Victorian dress greet you at each home. The reception, which is held at one of Islip’s historic churches, includes
live entertainment, refreshments, a Chinese auction and a 50/50 raffle. We will, again, be collecting toys for the USMC ‘Toys-for-Tots’ campaign. Please donate a new, unwrapped toy.
