On October 6th, eight members of the St. John the Baptist GENESIS program presented their own research projects to over 70 guests, students, family members and faculty at the first St. John the Baptist Scientific Research Symposium. These students are in their third year of the GENESIS program. This program is

designed to teach students the fundamentals of reading, understanding and then conducting their own original research projects. The symposium served as their first chance to showcase their original work. Students presented on a number of different topics spanning the range of sciences from psychology to mathematics and even

With the school year in full swing, I can honestly say that Villanova University is the perfect school for me. Located just outside Philadelphia, Villanova is in a prime spot on the Main Line. This affords students the opportunity to do fun things and kill boredom. The workload is a lot, but I have not really had any huge problems with timemanagement yet. I like to think that I’m surviving well enough on my own. Before college, I had my mom and dad to moderate the way I completed my schoolwork. They gave me the basis to undertake college classes without getting overwhelmed. My extracurricular involvement has really sweetened my experience at Villanova. It allowed me to make new friends, and develop another level of my appreciation for the Nova Nation. Instead of feeling homesick, I’ve begun to consider college my home.

The friends I’ve made here in these past two months have changed the way my college experience has played out. The rugby team has acted as another family to me. I’m confident that they’ll have my back when I need them. After all, we are a team. Furthermore, my professors have acted as mentors to me. Even when I struggle in a topic, they’ll go out of their way to make sure I know what I’m doing. This idea that we should care about the people around us sums up the Augustinian traditions from which Villanova was founded upon. Combined with an overwhelming school pride, this compassion has really made me feel at home here. It makes a huge difference if you feel that you aren’t alone. Having safety in numbers is a benefit that cannot be disputed. College is an entirely new experience, and I’m trying to make the most out of it.

The Riverhead Correctional Facility held a special unveiling ceremony yesterday for its new “Splashes of Hope” mural inside the jail, which was painted by incarcerated youth under the guidance of master muralist, Kirk Larsen. The project was funded and sponsored by “Splashes of Hope,” a Huntington-based nonprofit organization, and made possible through the generous donation of Theresa Santmann of Babylon. Santmann, who is also the Vice President of the organization’s Executive Board, had previously sponsored four mural panels in the jail’s Visiting Room. The mural was painted over five weeks during the months of September and October. Over the course of the project, participants in the Sheriff’s Youth Tier Initiative received both classroom and hands on instruction in the art of mural painting. Larsen, a lecturer at the Parsons New School in New York City, worked with the incarcerated youth several days a week to produce the massive eighty-five foot mural in the jail’s main corridor. The mural depicts soothing scenes of nature and water, as well as a bridge which is meant to evoke a sense of passage to brighter times. More than 15 male youth worked on the project. A second phase, which will begin in the coming months, will include young incarcerated women. The unveiling was attended by Splashes of Hope’s Director of Operations and Muralist, Diana Fogarty, the artist, Kirk Larsen, Theresa Santmann, the project’s sponsor, several of the

Ready, Set... Ready Yet? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Getting ready, for a girl, is a complicated affair. Rare is the female who can simply roll out of bed, jump in and out of the shower in 5 minutes, throw on the first outfit she pulls out of the closet, skip the makeup and extensive hair prep – and just go. I admire those who can, really, I do. Imagine how many hours, days, weeks even, that are saved over the course of just one year – time that could be spent out and about, actually living. But no, most of us have a whole routine, one that,

if anything, becomes lengthier and more complex the bigger the occasion. Like a weekday wedding, for instance. Forget attempting to go into work, leave a little early and freshen up at home on the fly. No, I need to take the entire day off, allotting at least a good five/six hours to the beautification process. Crazy? Perhaps. But who wants to rush? It’s nice to have some time to kick back and relax, allow plenty of time for hair mishaps, smudged makeup, chipped nail polish, runs in your pantyhose, traffic… all

the wonderful nuisances that only seem to happen when you have somewhere important to go. Of course, in the end, people rarely notice all the effort. Everything falls into place, all is well and the time and effort… well, you probably could have cut it in half and come out looking much the same. But such is the life of a girl. We’re wired differently. Think how many business industries thrive on our collective neuroses. You’re welcome. And now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to start getting ready.

They’re bright yellow, they sit around your child’s neck and they are the main reason as to why your child complained the first two weeks of school more than any other year prior. The new Massapequa High School student ID lanyards are known to everyone in the school as a cumbersome burden that serves no real and effective purpose. This new form of “security and safety enforcement,” as Doctor Barbra Williams puts it, “is to make sure that the security staff can prevent unwarranted intruders from entering the school.” Robert Catinella, a Massapequa High School Senior, compares the new lanyards to “dog collars” and, just like a dog, when a student forgets his collar, he or she is subjected to unfair punishment. When one person forgets his or her “collar,” they are given a lunch

detention, meaning that they cannot go outside for lunch for the day. In addition, that lunch detention can be found on one’s permanent record. For some kids, this could mean everything when it come to getting into a good college. Who is to say that these lanyards, and the supposed purpose they serve, will even be a factor in a high stakes situation? If the school district wants to increase safety, they need to increase security, not tag their students with an ID card that serves no other purpose other than to act as a red flag for security guards. And, to be completely honest, a yellow nylon lanyard isn’t going to stop any one crazy person from getting into a school building. Rumors have been circulating in the building between the staff and students that these lanyards will soon have a magnetic strip in them, which will be required

to be used in order to enter the school. Teachers have to do this in the morning to gain access into the building before the students. Along with every student arriving in the middle lobby for all periods, this new policy, if implemented for the 2015-2016 school year, would make an already broken system chaotic and inefficient. Massapequa School District is not alone in this new wave of “smart safety.” Students in Farmingdale, Amityville and Copiague high schools are being subjected to this plague too. The only way to fix the problem of school safety is to actually address the issue properly and efficiently. In this post Sandy Hook school shooting society we live in, we must not forget that, as a community, we should be pushing for safety and not some false sense of security.

This year, the Islip High School Catapult Team, with their pumpkin flinging machine, JackO-Splatter, placed twice in competitions held at Last Fling Pumpkin Fling at Pocono Raceway and the annual Long Island Pumpkin Flinging Championship. The Last Fling tasked competitors with creating a machine capable of chucking a two to four pound pumpkin as far as possible without the use of an engine. Both youth and adult teams compete for prizes including a grand champion trophy. Returning to the competition for the third

year, Islip placed second in the event. At the Long Island Championship, which is the 12th year Islip has participated, each team is allowed three throws that are for measured distance provided by a local survey/engineering company that coordinates with GPS laser equipment. Whichever team chucks their pumpkin the farthest in those three throws wins. Teamwork and perseverance paid off as Islip High School battled their way to first place at the Long Island Championship with a throw measuring 916.7 feet coming a bit short

Pumpkin Fling Kings of their record throw of 1,049,9 feet and launching their pumpkin at 145mph. The purpose of the competitions is to bring science, technology, engineering and math skills to life while also promoting teamwork. The team consists of Juniors: Ryan Maziarz, Steven Walis, Justin Feller, Alex Petry, Sam Meyers, Andrew Ginnegar; Sophomore Robert Phalen; Freshman Kyle Maziarz, Jack Needham, Ben Meyer and Kyle Ness. Making Good Choices During their recognition of Red Ribbon Week, Islip Middle School welcomed Rohan Murphy, an East Islip native, entrepreneur, inspirational athlete, motivational speaker and double leg amputee, to speak with the entire student body. Born with a congenital deformity of both legs, Murphy underwent a double amputation at age 4. During his visit, he told his story of courage, dedication, determination and overcoming adversity. He shared how a middle school physical education teacher changed his life forever by introducing him to the sport of wrestling. “We brought in guest speaker Rohan Murphy to cover the areas of making positive choices as it applies to kindness and compassion, as well as peer pressure for drugs,” Social Worker Shari Pennington said. “We want our students

to understand that their choices can determine if they are successful in their lives.” During his presentation, Murphy demonstrated a few of his wrestling moves, encouraged the students to chase their dreams and spoke about his life motto: no excuses.
