Islip’s Wing Elementary School celebrated Red Ribbon Week in style on October 27th, with the entire school gathering outside by the playground fence, clad in Islip spirit wear or favorite team jerseys to show their commitment to being part of a healthy team. With the help of Wing’s PTA, students had tied red ribbons to the fence the day before, spelling out the word “CARE” in huge letters. “We emphasized that word to show that our staff and students care about our bodies by making healthy choices,” said school social worker Allison Siegel. Love of Lit At the fall Scholastic book fair held at East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School on October 22nd and 23rd, every student had an opportunity to peruse the wide variety of books that were on display in Connetquot’s community room, thanks to dedicated organizational efforts by

the school’s PTA. Parents also were also invited to join the excited readers and assist them in selecting a “just right” book for their children. “It was wonderful to see how enthusiastic everyone was about promoting the importance of reading each and every night,”

said Principal Deborah Smith. “Fostering the love of literature is one of the main goals of the East Islip School District, and it was so rewarding to have such great participation from the community of readers at Connetquot.”

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund held its 3rd Annual Rock & Bowl event last week in an effort to provide three scholarshi ps for students looking to continue their education and promote aware ness among young people not to drink and drive. Over the past three years, the fund has offere d close to $10,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors at the Copia gue Memorial High School. This year, we hope to expand by offering the awards to other districts. Before Brittney was killed by a drunk driver only two days after high school graduation, she was always found helping some body, and even after she’s gone, she still is. The Fund and the scholarships are simple; being a 501c3 not-for-profit, all the money raised goes into a managed fund similar to your retirement 401k. This money earns interest and dividends. This earned money then goes to the awards, leaving the principal amou nt there for many years to come.

Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) hosted its Fourth Annual East End Walk for Alzheimer’s and Fall Festival in Westhampton Beach on Saturday, October 17th. Thirty-two teams and 376 individuals came out in support of Alzheimer’s research and awareness. This year’s event featured a pre-walk butterﬂy release in honor of those who are suffering from Alzheimer’s or have lost their battle with the disease. The walk wrapped with the annual Fall Festival. Hundreds of participants, volunteers and vendors turned out for the event, which raised nearly $75,000 in support of Alzheimer’s programs and services for local families. It is the largest amount ADRC has ever raised at its Westhampton Beach walk, exceeding

Birding & Biology Seventeen scienceminded and ecologyaware AP Biology students from Islip High School participated in the second annual Seatuck Birding Challenge on September 26th. During the 12-hour event, students competed in groups of 4 or 5 against other Long Island birding teams in an effort to

identify as many bird species as possible. “This is the best time of the year to examine bird diversity,” said biology teacher Wayne Mennecke, who was in attendance along with his daughter, Commack Road Elementary School second-grader Katerina Mennecke. “Many bird

species use Long Island as a migratory stop during the fall.” Following the event, the students enjoyed a special barbeque reception held at the Scully Estate at Seatuck’s Suffolk County Environmental Center in Islip.

Cleary Meets Culinary Students at East Islip High School’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality Career Academy were invited to participate in and prepare food for the 90th anniversary celebration of the Cleary School for the Deaf, which shares students with the high school. What made the recent vent even more special was that three of the students in the Culinary Academy are also students from the Cleary School. Two of the Cleary students are starting their second year with the Academy program and have bonded strongly with the other East Islip students, teaching them how to communicate using American Sign

Language The food for the Cleary luncheon – including homemade barbecued chicken with special sauce, burgers, hot dogs, potatoes, coleslaw, macaroni salad, and macaroni and cheese – was freshly prepared by the students in the East Islip Culinary Academy kitchen, under the supervision of teacher Patricia EmmonsFritz. After it was delivered to the Cleary School building in Nesconset, the students set up the food buffet and served more than 200 parents and students who were in attendance. The three Cleary School students in the Academy enjoyed the chance to showcase their culinary

skills to their family and friends at Cleary. “The Cleary students were delighted to have their peers at Cleary see them in charge of this special day,” said Israel Malinowitzer, East Islip’s guidance director and head of the Career Academy program. “It was great to see our Academy students interacting with the younger Cleary students, who will probably attend East Islip High one day. The Cleary staff members were also impressed by the way these students ran the whole event and they loved the food. Some even asked our students for the recipe for their special barbecue chicken.”

I ﬁnd it truly fascinating how individuals can come away with such varying perspectives on the same topic, time and time again. Whether it be politics, societal issues or even something so lighthearted as this very column, everyone is entitled to their opinion – it’s just interesting how that view is arrived upon. Intelligent argument is one thing; shameless bullying quite another. For some, there doesn’t seem to be a middle ground. I suppose these polarizing issues are what make our world go ‘round. Discussion is the basis of everything, from school classrooms to kitchen tables to podiums

and soapboxes. Especially in this day and age of instant feedback, rarely can an opinion be expressed without an opposing argument cropping up almost immediately. Written forums are the best – or worst, as the case may be – since they afford people the anonymity of expressing often insulting, uneducated retorts. There is something about faceto-face conversation that affords a measure of respect, begrudging though it may be. Personally, I feel this world is full of enough tragedy and conﬂict without the need to touch on it in this column. East Islip High School’s 2015-2016 video production class kicked off the new school year with a special multi-class endeavor on October 1st and 2nd. As part of an ongoing effort to teach the new video production students how to use the studio, technology education teacher James Connell invited another tech class to join his students for a live talk show titled “East Islip’s Talk TV.’” Members of teacher Harold Kench’s graphic

communications class served as a live audience, ﬁlling the high school’s studio and watching the program from the studio ﬂoor. Students Noah Palmieri, Brandon Potter and Greg Rosenthal served as hosts, interviewing Kench and other students from his class. After the presentation, Kench’s class was actively involved in critiquing the efforts of the video production students, providing valuable feedback to help improve their craft as the year unfolds.

“This activity is typically done early in the fall in an effort to provide the students with the experience of ﬁlming with an actual live studio audience,” said Connell. “The ‘Talk TV’ program serves as a precursor to later, larger events like Embers Coffee House, another live event ﬁlmed in the studio where students invite individuals from around the school to perform, including guitarists, poets and other acts.”

In recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, East Islip High School’s varsity and JV girls volleyball teams partnered with the Side-Out Foundation for the school’s annual Dig Pink rally on October 15th. Preceded by weeklong

Dig Pink T-shirt sales and a bake sale earlier in the day, the event raised $413 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. EI students showed their support by wearing pink and visiting the gym after school to enjoy delicious treats and exciting volleyball games,

as did Superintendent of Schools John V. Dolan. “Before the game, Superintendent Dolan stopped by to have a pep talk with the girls, and they all played hard to spike out cancer,” said head volleyball coach Romina Chacon.

also attended three Boy Scout Summer Camp seasons at Camp Wakpominee, as well as attending many Troop campouts, including the Mystic Seaport, CT, Washington, D.C. historical trip, the Gettysburg historical trails, and spelunking trip to PA. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are speciﬁcally Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. The Service Project that Maximillian executed with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was the construction and installation of two – six foot wooden picnic tables for the Sherwood Brothers American Legion Post #1152 in St. James, along with landscaping the picnic area with scrubs and mulch. Luke also implemented his project at the same American Legion Post by orchestrating the building of two rumble stone benches in front of a dedicated monument, with white gravel, plants, scrubs around the monument, along with a solar light to illuminate the monument at night. Max and Luke are both graduates of St. Anthony’s High School in Huntington, where they were both in sports and music. Max was on the high school winter and spring track teams, Track & Field team as pole vaulter, and was on the travel team of the East Islip Soccer Team. Luke was on the high school Crew Team, winter and spring track teams, Captain of the pole vault team for Track and Field and was also a member of the East Islip Soccer Team that competed internationally in Dublin, Ireland. Both Scouts earned the Dun Scotus academic honor awards and were on the school’s honor roll. They also both participated in the St. Anthony’s Choral Concert Tour and Pilgrimage to Rome, Italy. They were also DECA Members while in high school and were members of Support our Troops club. Community service has been important to both Maximilian and Luke, as they were both altar Servers

at St. Mary’s R.C. Church, East Islip and served on the Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang – providing and making sandwiches for homeless. Both are members of the Sons of the Legion, Sherwood Brothers American Legion, Post, 1152, where Maximilian serves as Squadron Commander and Luke serves as the Sergeant at Arms. Luke was selected to attend the American Legion Boys State, which is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for U.S. high school Students. Currently, Maximilian is attending SUNY Maritime, NY, as a Marine Business & Commerce major and he is also in their Naval Ofﬁcer Training Corp, specializing in Strategic Sealift operations. Luke is attending Clarkson University, as a business major in Global Supply Chain Management. He is in Clarkson’s Army ROTC program, the Golden Knight Battalion, which is one of the premier ROTC Battalions in Cadet Command. Maximilian and Luke are the son’s to Dr. Dieter Schapfel and Colleen Schapfel, Great River, and siblings to Heather and Emma.
