East Islip’s Boys JV Volleyball Team Claims Silver In Smithtown Tournament

East Islip High School’s boys junior varsity volleyball team headed to Smithtown High School West on Oct. 23 to compete in a 16-team tournament. The East Islip athletes started off slow, with some struggles in the pool play, but were able to overcome

adversity and win the silver playoff bracket. “Setter Jake Vessalico and libero Teague Nolan made huge contributions to the team during the playoff rounds, as well as outside hitter Carter Jones, who rose to the challenge when the team needed

him most,” said coach Bill Lackner, “Everyone stepped up when we needed them to. In each set of the playoffs, the boys showed an uncommon desire to win. I’m very proud that they were rewarded for their efforts and hard work.”

Buccaneer pride and tradition prevailed on homecoming weekend as the Islip School District inducted individuals into the Islip High School Hall of Fame during a dinner and reception, held in the school gymnasium on Oct. 22. The Hall of Fame honors distinguished members of the high school community who have made notable contributions to society through their profession,

community or institution. During the ceremony, Assistant Principal Curtis Juengerkes announced with pride honorees Kay Poro Erwood (Class of 1954), Robert Anthony Jones (Class of 1991), Anthony Mastrantonio (Class of 1989), Ryan Patrovich (Class of 2006), Pat Petersen (Class of 1978), Melody Thomas (Class of 1969) and the 2004 Islip High School softball team.

“Each of you have made sacrifices and great contributions,” Principal Jon LaRochester said during his opening remarks. “You will serve as role models for generations to come.” After each of the inductees were honored, they participated in an unveiling of the Hall of Fame wall, which holds the plaques near the main entrance to the high school.

Project 9 Line is a non-proﬁt organization that was formed in 2014 by Patrick Donohue Their focus is to bridge the communication gap between veterans and civilians. Through outreach, communication and purpose, they enable veterans to express themselves uniquely through forms of art.

Probably not even realizing how courageous and strong he really was, Patrick then wrote a business plan for what became this organization (Project 9 Line), so that he could bring art and wellness programs to other veterans on Long Island who might also be struggling. Little did he know that participating in those wellness programs and helping other veterans would become his calling and passion in life. In late 2020, Donohue was sworn in as an attorney and started his own law firm focused on veterans law, specifically VA disability and discharge upgrades. To this day he still runs that firm, and he also is an

Adjunct Professor at the Touro Law School Veterans Clinic, where he assists students with their veteran clients.

“Just a few years ago I had a tough time integrating and now I’m a productive and happy father, husband and attorney. I currently practice meditation, BJJ , yoga, play ice hockey, and I ﬂoat in a ﬂoat tank as often as I can. All of these practices are best for me as they bring me into the moment. I believe the best way to overcome trauma is to be in the moment as much as possible. In the past I have participated in many of Project 9 Line’s programs, including stand up comedy, which also helped me immensely on my journey.” Patrick still works on himself day to day, but knows that even if you face hard times, you can eventually get through them. Whether you’re a veteran wants to sign up for one to heal, learn or just to be a part of something locally, there is a spot for you to sign up for a class offered at Project 9 Line. After combat, Patrick got hit right away with some less-than-ideal feelings, such as anxiety and depression. “I was totally lost and alone and I had pushed away everybody I loved and fear ruled my life. Anxiety and depression ﬁlled my day and I never thought that I would be able to be a regular person again,” said Donohue. “I avoided everything and everybody to best protect myself from the unknown. Finally when the pain became so great I had a moment of clarity and I asked for help. I checked into the VA hospital in Northport and began the process of what ultimately turned my life around.” Slowly but surely, things started to turn around for him. While he was in the VA hospital, he was exposed to some art and wellness programs that completely transformed the way he viewed himself. “I started writing poetry, meditating, and doing yoga and these activities had a profound impact on me.” He was looking to see if any veteran organization offered those programs and services outside of the VA and he didn’t ﬁnd any, so at that time he decided that he would build it himself.

Patrick Donohue is a veteran himself and has an inspiring story of his own. He served in the Army on active duty from 2008 to 2012. He was deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan from May of 2010 to April of 2011. Later, he reenlisted into the Army reserves, which he served in from 2014 to 2016.

The event proceeds will fund the foundation’s work in supporting Long Island programs that help children with autism.

“The AutisMile provided an opportunity to showcase Main Street East Islip on behalf of a great cause,” EJ Autism Foundation founder Bea HustePetersen said. “A road mile is a bit of a rare event, but extremely competitive and exciting. It was a great opportunity to have fun

running or on the sidelines. We had competitors from as far as New York City and Washington, DC competing for bragging rights and prize money. The event was a great success and we will return next year.”

Bethpage Turkey Drive 2020 Volunteers The Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit the Island Harvest Food Bank will take place on Friday, November 19, 2021, from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The 13th annual food drive will include a no-contact donation car drive-through which will enable community residents to remain in their cars while volunteers remove donations from the vehicles. Long Islanders are asked to donate frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. Non-perishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices, and shelf-stable milk (please, no glass containers). The Bethpage Turkey Drive will take place at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage.

For those unable to make a donation on November 19th, or would rather show their support online, Bethpage is accepting online monetary donations at http:// www.lovebethpage.com/ turkeydrive, beginning in November, through Friday, December 31st. Donations can also be made at any Bethpage branch. “2020 was a recordbreaking year for the turkey drive,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “We hope Long Islanders continue to show their support again this year as the need on Long Island is still great. We’ve also taken all necessary safety precautions with the contactless drive-through donation drop-off so everyone should feel very safe.” “Thanks to Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s annual turkey drive and the generosity of countless Long Islanders, we’re able to provide a traditional holiday-style meal, complete with a turkey and all the trimmings, to thousands of local families who are struggling to make ends meet,” said Randi

Troop leaders can make a donation on behalf of troop members, and bring back patches for the entire troop. Since the first Bethpage Turkey Drive was organized in 2009, hundreds of community volunteers have come out to assist in the collection of more than 40,000 turkeys and over 168,000 pounds of food, which were then given to Long Island families facing hardship in time for the holidays. Island Harvest Food Bank has seen an increase in the requests for food and support services among the 400 community-based agencies it serves. Fifteen members of East Islip High School’s mock trial team traveled to Harvard University, accompanied by coach Patsy Lester and parent chaperone Pat Blair, for the Angela R. Mathew Harvard Mock Trial Seminar Program, held on Oct. 16-17. Team members were excited to compete in

person again after a year of online tournaments due to the pandemic. Students attended lectures on trial presentation skills and worked in breakout sessions with the members of the Harvard mock trial team. On Sunday evening, East Islip’s students faced other high school teams in competition as both prosecution and defense in

the case of State v. Sutcliffe. East Islip prevailed in both trials and received excellent feedback from the judges. In addition, two seniors, captain Emily Blair and captain and president G. Gerondel, were recognized for outstanding performance in their rounds.
