Motorists spend hours behind the wheel and spend lots of money on maintenance to ensure their vehicles are in top working order. But tires are one area of maintenance that often goes unchecked, even by the most diligent automobile owners. Tires undergo a lot of wear and tear, which only highlights the importance of proper tire maintenance. But many drivers do not give tires a passing thought until there is a problem, such as a ﬂat or excessive wear. Also, some drivers think that all tires are the same, failing to realize that the kind of tires vehicles need depends on various factors. In addition to the size and type of vehicle, drivers should consider the type of driving they do and the driving conditions they routinely encounter before choosing tires for

their vehicles. Many vehicles come off the lot with all-season passenger tires because these tires are among the most versatile. However, if you live in a particular climate or do a lot of driving that requires specific traction or maneuverability, allseason tires may not be the best bet. The following are descriptions of common tire types and the conditions in which they might make the best fit: All-Season All-season tires provide all-season versatility, good wear and ride comfort. They can be dependable tires and offer light snow traction as well. All-season tires provide adequate protection in many conditions, but do not offer specific benefits in any one area. They’re likely to be satisfactory for a vast array of drivers. All-season tires

are typically offered in touring and passenger types. Touring will provide lower road noise and better handing, while passenger varieties offer a smooth ride and longevity. Summer Tires Summer tires are designed to offer traction and maneuverability in warm weather. Orbital grooves and complex treads maximize traction in hot, humid weather. If you live in an area where the temperature is consistently steamy, summer tires may be a good investment. Winter Tires A safety precaution for many people who live where conditions often include snow, ice and cold weather, winter tires can be lifesavers. These tires are designed using several different types of rubber, and feature tread designs that maximize

traction during inclement conditions. Winter tires also come in various subcategories. Studdable winter tires provide the extra security of added studs to enhance traction on ice. Performance winter tires offer better dry road handling, but traction on snow and ice may be compromised. Performance Tires Performance tires offer a sports car feel. These are meant for drivers who want to feel the road and increase low-speed traction. The higher the level of performance, the increased level of handling and stability at high speeds.

While the cost savings associated with driving depend on where families live and where they want to visit, driving is often the most affordable option for families traveling on a budget. Families planning their next road trip can consider the following tips to make their getaways go as smoothly as possible:

Prepare your vehicle. Rental car costs can add up quickly, so families often hope to drive their own vehicles on driving vacations. Parents should prepare their vehicles for upcoming trips by taking them in for checkups, during which mechanics can change the oil, inspect the air ﬁlter and rotate the tires so the car operates as safely and efﬁciently as possible.

The cost savings of driving your own vehicle may be negated if it breaks down on your trip, so make sure the car or truck has a clean bill of health before embarking on your trip. Bring things to keep passengers occupied. A signiﬁcant disadvantage to driving instead of ﬂying is it typically to takes longer to arrive at your destination by ground than it does by air. To quell the boredom and restlessness that can settle in on long road trips, bring along some tablets and chargers so passengers can play games and watch movies along the way. Plan your route. Shiver Me Timber Point The PTA of East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School was recently chosen as 2016 Suffolk County regional winners of the New York State PTA’s Pick a Reading Partner program award. “Shiver Me Timber Point,” the school’s pirate-laden theme for PARP, included treasure maps tracking the total number of minutes read by students, and messages in a bottle with pictures of the children and their reading partners. Principal Danielle Naccarato even dressed up as a pirate princess for a vocabulary hat parade after her students exceeded a principal’s challenge of reading for 40,000 minutes or more. “We think that PARP strengthens reading and communication skills between children and

The Lost Holiday By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

November. No sooner has the last of the Halloween candy been given out to the neighborhood trick-ortreaters, than we are faced with the prospect of preparing for the next festive occasion on the calendar… Christmas, apparently. Year after year, the interval of time between the two seems to evaporate into a void of shopping, decorating, cooking and caroling, forgetting the small fact that there exists another holiday in between. I understand that, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t have the same “fun” appeal to children and adults alike. There are no costumes, no Santa Claus, no presents to speak of… and yet, that is precisely what makes the day so uniquely special.

The entire point, in fact, is to be grateful for that which we have – family, friends, health, happiness – and not be caught up in the materialism that tends to overtake every other occasion. It’s not about the meal, or the football, or the Black Friday shopping deals that continue to creep into Thursday; it’s about the company you spend the day celebrating with. This is the case no matter the holiday, of course; but on Thanksgiving, we tend to step back and appreciate it just a bit more. Or we should. So to all those who enjoy shopping at the mall while being serenaded by Christmas carols over the stores’ PA systems… there will be plenty of time for that beginning on November 25th. Until

then, let’s try to enjoy the remainder of Autumn, the harvest season. Let’s work on planning our Thanksgiving menus and football-watching marathons if we must; but mostly, let us all work on finding things to be thankful for in our lives. Trust me, the Christmas sales and songs will still be there at the end of the month. The spirit of giving doesn’t need to coincide with actual, tangible gifts, nor does it need to wait for any particular occasion. It’s a feeling, an attitude, a sense of appreciation which should be embraced no matter the time. Sure, things can always be better; but they can also always be worse. Thanksgiving is as good a time as any to remember this.

Redmen Honored The Great American Rivalry series honored two East Islip High School varsity football players – Doug Carpluk and Walter Westhoff – for athletic and academic excellence at an October 15th home contest against rival Sayville. The two students were recognized in a special ceremony prior to the kickoff of the game, which was supported by the U.S. Marine Corps. Carpluk, a kicker and first-year varsity player, is three for three this season

on field goal attempts and 20 for 21 on extra point attempts. He has a weighted GPA of 105.8 and plans to pursue a degree in chemical and mechanical engineering at Ohio State University, University of Alabama or University of Pittsburgh. Westhoff, a three-year varsity player, has started every game this year at left tackle. He has a weighted GPA of 105.9 and will attend Hamilton College in upstate Clinton next fall, where he plans to major in
