The team placed fourth in the overall team awards ranking higher than four-year colleges such as Emerson College, Suffolk University and Bridgewater State College. Suffolk AHRC is celebrating Halloween with their 10th Annual “Turn Your Pumpkin Into Somethin” Contest. Each or our Day Habilitation homerooms receives a pumpkin to turn into something! Together AHRC Staff and participants choose a theme for their pumpkin and together create spooktacular works of gourds!
Each homeroom was only given three days to create their masterpiece! Once they are completed they are put on display for all the other staff and participants to view and vote for their favorite pumpkin. From spaghetti dinners to Cinderella’s magical ride each pumpkin represents the range of creativity and skills that our participants have.
3rd place in the overall team scores Suffolk team president Nick Krauss of West Islip placed 1st in Informative Speaking while Shadrack Boakye of Brentwood placed 2nd in Poetry Interpretation. Nick Krauss and Shadrack Boakye have also qualified for the National Speech and Debate Championships at Ohio University in April. Suffolk County Community College was the only community college to compete at the tournament.

Compass Coalition and Islip High School teamed up to sponsor an antibullying and violence prevention program at entitled “One Voice Can Create Change” that included a performance of All Access Productions’, “No More Victims.” “No More Victims” follows the day in the life of four high school students, giving the audience a glimpse into
their public persona and private struggles. The musical’s purpose is to give a voice to the silent victim, challenging the audience to do the same while providing opportunities to stand, speak and defend themselves and others. Following the conclusions of the production, cast members provided a workshop for, and spent time with, the students where they allowed everyone to speak openly about their social
experiences in a positive climate. In addition to the daytime performances for the high school students, there was also an evening performance for parents and community members. TRAINING COMPLETED - Private Nicholas Guinta USMC recently received the coveted globe and anchor symbolizing completion of thirteen weeks of intensive training and successfully concluded the grueling 54 hour exam known as the Crucible at Paris Island. The Marine is home on leave and will be reporting to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for further Marine Corps training.
Rousing Homecoming The excited student body of East Islip High School filled the gymnasium on October 24th for the annual Pep Rally, the culmination of Spirit Week and rousing preface to the next day’s homecoming parade and football game. Following a performance by the school’s band, the junior varsity athletes and members of the East Islip hockey and rugby teams were recognized. The school’s varsity teams were then introduced by their respective coaches, including swimming, boys and girls cross-country,
gymnastics, boys and girls soccer, boys golf, volleyball, field hockey and kickline. Near the end of the celebration, this year’s homecoming court was announced. The Class of 2018 was represented by freshman attendants Anthony Cialdella and Jessica Churpita; the Class of 2017 by sophomore attendants Victoria Goldfader and Mike Krebs, and the Class of 2016 by junior attendants Shannon O’Connor and John Sihpol. Senior nominees for homecoming king and queen – the winners to be
announced during halftime of the homecoming football game, along with the winners of the float competition – included king candidates Kevin Capobianco, Nick Dahill and Tyler Pearsall, and queen candidates Taylor Kenney, Katherine Newhoff and Tara Ruggiero. Closing out the pep rally was an acrobatic display from the cheerleading squad and the entrance of the varsity football team, leaving cheers ringing in the ears of all in attendance.

Fighting Cancer Two members of East Islip High School’s Math Honor Society – Michael Borelli, the group’s president, and Carolyn Sidoti, who serves as secretary and treasurer – participated in the American Cancer Society’s
21st Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach State Park on October 19th. The two seniors helped the society raise $120 for the cause. Approximately 65,000 walkers took part in the
event. The 5-mile walk, sponsored by Melville’s MSC Industrial Supply Co., raised $3.15 million in total to aid in breast cancer research and support services.

A few years ago, when I turned sixteen, I was overcome with the idea that I needed to purchase my own first car. It was a pride thing. My dad bought his first car, and I wanted to buy mine. A few months after that realization, I did. I still own the Jeep that I bought with my own money. Now, a year and a half later, my brother is in the exact same situation. He’s been working alongside me on Fire Island, and now, at sixteen years old, he’s got the itch to buy his own car. It’s unbelievable that my little brother, the same kid who I used to beat in video games and play with outside, is growing up. He is no longer that little guy excited to see me after school lets out. Now that I’m at college, he’s the only kid in the house. I think it has really pushed him to grow up and make the right choices. Instead of people
grouping us together like they used to, my brother is free to make his own decisions now, and be the person he wants to be. I miss him a lot while I’m away. I used to see him the majority of every day. Now, I’m lucky to see him once a month. My parents think this transition has been the hardest on them, but the long-distance bond between my brother is the hardest thing thing I’ve had to get used to. My brother talks about going to Villanova just like me and getting a Jeep just like me, but I want him to be his own person. Now that he is maturing and looking to build his own persona, I want him to remember the fun times we had as little kids - before we had to worry about grown up things, or the distance between us.

The Perfect Dress By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The perfect dress. Is there even such a thing? Perhaps. It’s just that, when pressed for time, the search becomes seemingly more futile by the day. Store after store, scanning the racks for something – anything – that stands out and screams you... I suppose I’m atypical in the sense that I’m part of a rare breed of girl that doesn’t enjoy shopping; that is, not when I need something specific, anyway. Send me on a random shopping spree with all the time in the world, and I have no problem dropping several hundred dollars in a matter of hours. But give me an occasion, a short window of time to find something appropriate and,
well, let’s just say that window closes most of the way before I can motivate myself to venture out. Couple that with my deep aversion to being forced to navigate an entire mall, that endless, sprawling layout of department stores and dress shops, and my options become increasingly limited. More often than not, I find myself on the complete opposite side from where I need to be, standing in front of one of the gigantic maps, vainly trying to ascertain the quickest route to my destination. Once in the store, there’s the matter of locating which floor the department you’re seeking is on, which, oddly enough, some employees don’t even seem to have a handle on. So
after riding the escalator up and down and making the rounds of each level, I can then get down to the purpose of my mission – actually pinpointing something I like, finding it in my size and then, assuming steps 1 & 2 go as planned, crossing my fingers that said “perfect” dress is somewhat affordable. Sound simple? Let’s just say my last dress shopping mission, which I began precisely two weeks before the date I needed it, has so far encompassed two different malls, several department stores and random dress shops and resulted in my purchasing two different selections, neither of which I am completely sold on. Led by the East Islip High School’s band, marchers from across the community joined in to celebrate as they inaugurated a new homecoming parade route on October 25th. The revamped trek, with festive floats in tow, depicting various breakfast cereals, led from Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School across Manhattan Boulevard, down Carleton Avenue and then across Roslyn Street, ending at Sal Ciampi Field at Boomer Esiason Stadium prior to the varsity football game against Half Hollow Hills West. The stands were filled with energy and pride, from dozens of excited youth football players in their
jerseys to older students adorned in red and white face paint. Some even held up a large homemade sign bearing the image of East Islip football coach Sal Ciampi Jr. New traditions also came into play during halftime, when the selections of Tyler Pearsall and Tara Ruggiero as homecoming king and queen were unveiled, as opposed to previous years when the announcement was made the day before during the pep rally. Runners-up in the homecoming court included Kevin Capobiano, Nick Dahill, Taylor Kenney and Katherine Newhoff. While the seniors usually prove victorious, the underdog sophomores, who impressed the crowd
with their Fruity Pebbles theme, won the float contest. Cheers were also abundant for the school’s varsity cheerleaders, who kept Redmen spirits high throughout the day, and for strong halftime performances by the band (blasting through Pharrell Williams’ “Happy”) and kickline. On the football front, the 4-3 Redmen burned hot at first, racking up two unanswered touchdowns in the first quarter, but ultimately fell short in the face of a Colts comeback, losing a tough 28-27 contest. WINNERS ANNOUNCED - On October 12th, Star Island Yacht Club hosted its 5th Annual Striped Bass Tournament. Winners were awarded cash and trophies for the biggest striped bass and the largest bluefish. This year’s big winner was the crew of “Joy Sea.” They won $5,000 for catching the heaviest striped bass, which weighed in at 41.7 pounds, and another $1,000 for the largest bluefish at 13.5 lbs. Members of “Big Game” took home $2,500 and second place with a striped bass weighing in at 39.4 lbs. The crew of the “Akkina Kel” came in third with a striped bass at 35.4 lbs. and a cash prize of $1,500.

The magic of the music, the waltzing snowflakes, and the land of the sweets
will give joy and inspiration to children of all ages. Lumière Ballet encompasses a year round professional training program, summer intensive studies, and a performing company which presents fine works from theclassical, romantic, and the Lumiere Ballet’s original repertoire. The company performs throughout Long Islandand New York City. Svetlana Caton Founder and Artistic CoDirector of Lumière Ballet. Her background and training is from the great heritage of the Russian Ballet. At the age of 12, her participation in the
prestigious Concours de Danse in Paris brought a scholarship offer at the school of the Paris Opera as well as an invitation to study with the legendary stars of the Maryinsky Imperial Ballet; Olga Preobrajenska, Liubov Egorova and Mathilda Ksenschinska. She performed professionally in Europe and in the USA and has been teaching for 30 years. Featuring her qualified students and professional dancers, she creates original story ballets, (Hansel and Gretel, Snow Maiden, the Little Prince) and stages the great Classics (Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty,

The United States Marines Corps and Dream Event Planning announced the launch of the new L.I. Weddings for Warriors program at the Coral House in Baldwin. The program will assist those in the armed services with making special arrangements for displaced couples while a service man or woman is overseas in places like Afghanistan. They will volunteer on Long Island bases, or other military facilities, in preparing weddings and vow renewals. “Unfortunately, because
of deployments, you do not always know when duty will call. Couples may be pulled from one another with little time to plan an entire wedding. We want to thank the brave men and women that fight tirelessly to keep us safe and give them a dream wedding,” said Adam Panetta, Executive Vice President, Dream Event Planning. The Weddings for Warriors project was started in 2009 in Savannah, Georgia by the Savannah Wedding Tourism Council. The event provided wedding ceremonies and

Gaining Experience Eight members of East Islip High School’s mock trial team – Ashley Brett, Britney Baker, Jack Carney, Erica Hayden, Angela Loizides, Elizabeth Loizides, Kierstin O’Hara and Joe Teknus – visited Harvard University for the Angela R. Mathew High School Mock Trial Seminar on October 4th-6th, accompanied by teachers Patsy Lester and Karen Schindler. The seminar was run by the members of the Harvard University mock trial team, ranked first in the nation. Teams traveled
from all over North America to participate, including Texas, Ohio and Toronto. The Harvard students led participants in interactive workshops and intensive one-onone breakout sessions to teach the finer points of argument and trial advocacy. Each session focused on a particular topic, such as opening statements, objections and cross-examination. At the end of the weekend, teams competed in scrimmage rounds judged by Harvard Mock Trial members. East Islip
