River, with the JV squad earning a victory. Islip Breast Cancer Coalition representatives attended the event, commemorating the athletes’ efforts with gifts of pink roses and gym bags. “Congratulations to both teams for a great season and their achievement in community service,” said Hamilton.

Back in the Spotlight By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

This year, I gingerly decided to throw my tap shoes back into the ring by enrolling in my old dance studio’s Adult Tap class, after five years of “retirement.” There is something about the camaraderie of dancing with old friends – alumni, as we are referred to – that brings back a ﬂood of happy memories of days gone by… days spent on stage in tutus and tiaras, sequins and sparkles, smiling for the audience in the dimly lit auditorium as we performed the routines we had perfected over the last six months. So, when the opportunity presented itself this September, I decided to give it a go. I have to admit, I wasn’t

sure what to expect after such a long absence. But, to my pleasant surprise, not much has changed. The old tap shoes still fit, the hardwood ﬂoor of the studio shines just as I remembered it, and the steps… well, they’re a work in progress, week by week, as my muscle memory slowly but surely recalls the footwork that at one point had been second nature. They say that those you spend years enjoying extracurricular activities with become like a second family of sorts over time, and the dance studio is no exception – especially after 20 years of essentially growing up with the same core group of girls. Fast forward a couple of decades, and some of these

same “girls” are now married with children of their own – a few dancing at the studio as well – or pursuing careers in various fields. To say “I feel old” would be an understatement; and yet, somehow, once we all enter the studio, those “grown up” problems seem to melt away. Flash back to the little girl in the pale yellow tutu, arms flailing, feet scurrying in a mad dash to join her class onstage for her very first dance recital… Where ever did the years go indeed? It’s nice to know that, as our lives continue to move at a frenzied pace day after day, there is still time to step into another mode, lace up the old tap shoes and shuffle our problems away. At least for an hour, anyway.

ELECTION DAY 2016 This presidential campaign is like no other. One candidate is a successful businessman who beat all the odds, plus 16 other Republicans, and became the Republican nominee for President. The other candidate is a lawyer and a lifetime politician, who beat Bernie Sanders and became the first woman Democratic nominee. The tone of this campaign has been quite intense throughout the primaries, the conventions and the three debates. In many ways, the country has never been more divided. You have Republican Donald J. Trump, who wants to “Drain the Swamp” of Washington D.C. and rebuild our country.

You have Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, who wants to continue with the current path we are on of big government being involved in many aspects of our lives. The media distractions have been unbearable, and arguably quite one-sided in most of their coverage. The PTA of East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School was recently chosen as 2016 Suffolk County regional winners of the New York State PTA’s Pick a Reading Partner program award. “Shiver Me Timber Point,” the school’s pirate-laden theme for PARP, included treasure maps tracking the total number of minutes read by students, and messages in a bottle with pictures of the children and their reading partners. Principal Danielle Naccarato even dressed up as a pirate princess for a vocabulary hat parade after her students exceeded a principal’s challenge of reading for 40,000 minutes or more. “We think that PARP strengthens reading and communication skills between children and adults,” said Timber Point PTA President Susan Kiernan. “We are thrilled that our PTA was recognized for all their hard work, and for our amazing chairpersons Alyson Ferreby and Marianne Gilmore.”

East Islip High School’s girls volleyball teams held their annual Dig Pink event on October 5th, in recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in order to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Dressed in pink at the games against visiting Brentwood, the crowd, including Superintendent John V. Dolan, cheered the

varsity Lady Redmen on to a 3-0 victory. The junior varsity team lost a tough match, but still maintained a winning 5-3 record. The dedicated athletes also helped support the special event by dipping pretzels, preparing bags of candy to sell, making posters and decorating the gymnasium. Throughout October, the entire high school will follow the

Sorting It Out Islip High School students in the Junior Chamber of Commerce and Interact clubs recently volunteered for the Islip American Legion Auxiliary Unit 411, helping sort greeting cards for veterans. The cards will be used for care packages and during the holidays to send to

deployed soldiers and recovering soldiers in veterans’ hospitals. “We are thankful that the students volunteered for this,” said teacher Renee Clock, the Junior Chamber of Commerce Club adviser. “It is important and sentimental for veterans to receive words of love and

encouragement when they are away fighting for our freedom or in a hospital recovering from injuries. We also send cards to veterans living in nursing homes, and it brings tears to their eyes to know that they are not forgotten.”

Legislator Tom Cilmi presented a check for $2,000 to the Rett Syndrome Center at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. On hand to accept the donation was Great River resident Anthony Dattero and his family. Anthony won a charity wing-eating contest sponsored by Legislator Cilmi. The proceeds of the contest go to the charity of the winner’s choice. Mr. Dattero’s daughter Jayme (center) suffers from Rett Syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder in girls, which affects the way the brain develops, causing a progressive inability to use muscles for eye and body movement and speech. Also shown is Jayme’s sister, Jordan. Legislator Cilmi stated,

“I am delighted to be able to make this contribution on behalf of all those who participated in our 6th Annual Wing Fling Charity Wing-Eating Contest. Researchers actually have some hope that this rare debilitating condition may actually be reversible. What a wonderful thing it would be if this contribution helps in some small way to make that a reality for Jayme, her family, and the many others who suffer from this rare disorder.” “On behalf of my family and the many girls afﬂicted with Rett Syndrome, I want to thank Legislator Cilmi, his staff and the fierce competitors for affording me the opportunity to raise funds and awareness for Rett Syndrome. Set to Thrill Nine of Islip High School’s most promising and dedicated student-musicians have been recognized with All-County honors and selected to perform in the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education’s All-County Festival. Their concert performances will take place on November 19th at Northport High School. Participating in the AllCounty Mixed Chorus, and prepared by Dr. Rich Harris, Jr., Islip’s chorus director, are John Del Genio (tenor), Matthew Kadam (bass), Sheila Kiernan (soprano) and Nicole Poliandro (alto). Participating in the All-

County Women’s Chorus, likewise prepared by Harris, are altos Morgiana McDevitt and Emma Regina. Participating in the AllCounty Band, and prepared by Islip band director Steve Campanella, is clarinetist Katie Warnokowski. Participating in the AllCounty Orchestra, and prepared by Islip orchestra director Zachary Butterfield, are double bassists James Baldino and Sean Dullaghan. These students were selected for All-County out of a field of hundreds of applications from across Suffolk County based upon their performance at last year’s New York State School

Music Association Solo Festival and subsequent recommendations from their music teachers who prepare the young musicians for the NYSCAME Festival. After a series of rehearsals, the students will have the opportunity to perform under the leadership of skilled conductors from the college music community and professional music industry. “For a small district like Islip, we are thrilled to be represented at the county level by so many exceptional musicians,” said Vincent Green, Islip’s director of fine and performing arts.

Make the Most of Gameday Entertaining Few things are more exciting and festive for sports fans than gathering with close friends to cheer on a favorite team. Although a large part of the fun involves watching the game, food and other festivities often round out the day especially when fans gather in the comforts of private homes rather than big stadiums. Having good food nearby is essential when hosting sports fans for a big game, and there are many additional ways to make gameday that much more fun and memorable:

Choose Fan-Favorite Foods Game day menu options can include anything from finger foods to more elaborate appetizers to main courses. Games can take several hours from start to finish, so make sure you have enough food to cover the duration of the event. The AHFA report found that 38 percent of homeowners intended to purchase fire pits for their outdoor entertaining areas, and such fire pits can keep guests warm as the sun goes down and the night air gets chilly. Fire pits have become must-have items for outdoor entertaining areas, and hosts can surely find one that suits their needs. Change the Menu Grilling hot dogs and hamburgers might still work when entertaining outdoors in fall and winter, but hosts may want to stray from other summertime fare like watermelon or pasta salad.
