Emotional Resilience “Don’t promise when you’re happy, don’t reply when you’re angry, and don’t decide when you’re sad.” - Ziad K. Abdelnour What does it mean to be resilient? For some, it’s the idea of bouncing back quickly after adversity. For others, it is the ability to remain stoic. Some see it as simply ones’ ability to face another day. My own definition may be counter-intuitive to some, but it is the courage to feel negative emotions, allowing the discomfort to effect you, grabbing the kernels of wisdom a negative experience brings, and then embarking upon the healing process and honoring whatever form it takes. I think it is a gross human misconception that to cry, to punch a pillow, to feel hopeless, to declare that the world is coming to an end, or any other things you need to do in the midst of grief or profound disappointment, somehow makes you not emotionally resilient. People have always observed me to be great at “bouncing back.”
What they don’t see is that I took the time I needed to be a complete mess! Yes, I said it. I take the time I need to honor the negative emotions, to give them their chance to have a field day. Then I dust myself off and move forward, feeling cleansed and renewed. It’s all part of the process. It’s a myth that strong people don’t cry. Can we put that one to bed right now, please? Those heavier, denser emotions are part of the learning experience, and they are necessary. With that being said, so is stacking the deck in your favor toward healing. Below is my cheat sheet for making it through tough, upsetting or scary times: Take a moment to STOP, look around and assess your immediate surroundings. Ask yourself if you are in any danger right in that moment. Chances are, the answer is no. Next, focus on 5 things you see around you. Then focus on 3 things you can feel around you (tactile). Third, focus on one thing you can smell. Fourth, focus on one thing you can hear.
Play classical or jazz music. I find that both of these genres of music have a soothing effect on the emotional part of the brain. Picture yourself as a character in a movie. The people around you are the supporting players. Think of the crisis before you as the script (the plot), and you as delivering the ultimate Oscarworthy performance. After all, life is a grand illusion anyway, and it is a safe bet to assume that you have starred in many other dramas, as well as some great comedies, in your lifetime. Go do something you enjoy. No matter how despondent you may feel, tell yourself you are going to take a short break from being “you,” and simply go do something enjoyable. Take a run, ride a bike, eat an ice cream cone, watch a funny movie, bake cookies, call an old friend, do something romantic with a significant other. I promise you, your problems can wait an hour. Lastly, when you do bounce back, pay it forward and use that newfound wisdom to help someone else.

Islip Terrace Volunteers from PSEG Long Island got down and dirty in the fight against hunger by working the land at Island Harvest’s new twoacre Giving Garden in Brentwood. “Our employees participate in hundreds of community service projects throughout the year,” said Jorge Jimenez, PSEG Long Island director of customer experience.
“We really enjoyed being outside and helping with the weeding, raking and harvesting. Knowing we’ve done something to help alleviate hunger here on Long Island, where we all live and work, made it a very rewarding experience.” “It’s great to meet so many people who care about their community,” said Hillary Hess, Island Harvest community gardens coordinator. ”We are thankful for our friends at PSEG Long Island for their dedication and hard work and for helping us bring fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables to families that are food insecure.” Island Harvest operates 37 community gardens on Long Island, mostly in local schools. Last year, the gardens produced 600,000 pounds of fresh produce for area families in need.

November 6th is Election Day. New Yorkers have an abysmal record of turning out to vote. In the 2016 presidential election, New York ranked 41 out of the 50 states for lowest turnout. In 2014, which was an off year election, similar to this year, New York ranked 49/50, with only one state having lower turnout than us. What will happen this year in New York? What will happen in Suffolk County? Will you be making your choice known or abdicating your power to others? This year we have seen increased polarization and heightened civil discourse throughout the country, in our state and even in our county. Although all the noise may appear to indicate that most voters are paying attention and interested in politics, this simply may not be the case. Yes, certainly there are more people speaking out. Students in high schools and colleges appear engaged and energized, holding marches and their own voter registration drives. Women as a group are more visible, running for public offices as well as organizing voter registration and voter turnout initiatives. We have also seen that voter turnout in the primaries this year was much higher than in the 2014 primary. However, in the 2014 general election, only 28 % of new Yorkers voted. How many of the 72% who did not vote, will this year? We hear from those who are engaged, but what about the silent majority? How many are turned off to politics because of the rhetoric? How many feel that there is no way they can make a difference so why bother? How many have become so mistrustful of what they hear and read, that they stop trying to find out about the candidates, their positions, and decide not to vote?
On November 6th, each of us will be voting for our member of the House of Representatives and also one US Senator from New York. We will also be voting for NY Governor, NY Lieutenant Governor, NY Comptroller and NY Attorney General, as well as our NY State Senator and NY State Assembly member. In addition, the Suffolk County Comptroller and Suffolk County Clerk are also on the ballot. There are also some special elections in several of our towns. Therefore, this election is important for all levels of our government. This outcome will affect everyone, those who vote and those who do not. Not voting is not protesting what is going on. It is giving up. It is relinquishing power and abdicating it to others. You can check your registration and polling place at SuffolkVotes.com or call Suffolk County Board of Elections (BOE) at 631 852-4500 or the NY Board of Elections at 800 367-8683. Know who is on your ballot and which candidates will represent you. If you cannot get to polls on Election Day because you will be out of the county, in a hospital, or have primary care duties and you have applied for an absentee ballot, you can send in your completed ballot, postmarked no later than November 5th, to the Suffolk County BOE. Ballots may also be hand delivered to the Suffolk County BOE or a poll site by 9pm on November 6th. The Suffolk County BOE has extended hours and will be opened Saturday, November 3rd from 9am to 1pm. Turn out and vote on November 6th. BE A VOTER. The power is yours.

There are many places where voters can go to be informed, hear from candidates themselves, learn about issues from non-partisan organizations. There are voter guides both paper and online. One example is the LWVNY guide, VotingNewYork.org, which will not only let each voter know candidates on their ballot, but also candidate bios, endorsements, and where they stand on important issues. In addition, it will let readers know their poll site and if desired, send a reminder to vote. Many community organizations are hosting candidate debates as well as some media channels. Voters should listen to what the candidates have to say as well as to questions they avoid. If they have been in public office before what they have done can be compared to what they promise they will do. If they would be new to elected office, learn more about their positions and their abilities to communicate with people of all backgrounds and opinions.

West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition support at this year’s Annual Appreciation and Awareness Luncheon at Captain Bill’s Restaurant in Bay Shore. The WIBCC is a nonprofit, grass roots organization founded in 1992, working to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. The Coalition was directly responsible for the first comprehensive cancer cluster survey in Suffolk County which lead to a multi-year Long Island
breast cancer study mandated by Congress in 1993. This group of volunteers provide support services to women who are undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care through the “Lend A Helping Hand” program to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy, and outreach throughout the community.

The Maurer Foundation is a local nonprofit organization that has been for over serving the community 20 years. Their mission is to save lives through breast health education that focuses on breast cancer prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, early detection and risk reduction. Since their founding in 1995, they have reached almost 350,000 high school and college students, parents, coworkers and neighbors with lifesaving information on breast health, expanded their reach internationally, training their first breast health educator from outside the United States, annually educated over 200,000 people across the world on their website and trained breast health educators in local nursing programs, exponentially increasing their impact on Long Island. This October, The Maurer Foundation has schedueld 132 breast health programs, reaching 3,300 people with life-saving information on breast selfexams, breast cancer risk factors, risk reduction, myths, facts, mammogram guidelines and more! Thousands of visitors flocked to the 40th Annual Town of Islip Apple Festival on Saturday at the Islip Grange in Sayville. There was something for everyone at the festival, which offered specialty foods, craft vendors, live music, line dancing, and a pie eating and scarecrow making competition. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by members of the Islip Town Board, including Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen; Councilman James O’Connor; Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik;
Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs/ DPW Commissioner Tom Owens; Deputy Commissioner Deirdre Whalberg; Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy; Rep. Peter King and Assemblyman Dean Murray. Supervisor Carpenter paid special tribute to the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs team on the occasion of the Apple Fest’s 40th year. More than 400 FREE apples were handed out to the crowd during the festival. “Friends and families
have been coming to the Islip Apple Festival at the Grange in Sayville for 40 years. It’s the perfect family event to enjoy food, fun and learn about Islip Town’s history,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter and Town officials will kick-off the Town’s year-long 335th Birthday celebration on November 29th at 4 pm in front of Town Hall with a parade and the lighting of the Town Cupola in blue and orange, Islip’s official colors. Everyone is invited to attend.
Learning About Civics East Islip High School students recently participated in the Eastern District of New York’s Justice Institute program, a camp experience focused on learning about the judicial system, held in the Federal Courthouse building in Central Islip. The program, developed by U.S. District Judge Joseph Bianco in collaboration with the Touro Law Center, provides attending students with the civics education and advocacy skills that will prepare them for college, career and civic engagement. East Islip sophomores Jacob Arens, Kate McGaugh, Vince Papillo and Kimberly Turtell – all members of the school’s mock trial team coached by Patricia Lester – competed in a championship mock trial round against Massapequa High School, earning first place in
the tournament. Turtell was recognized for Best Opening Statement for the Prosecution. The program concluded with an inspirational talk by guest speaker Mitsue Salador, an American citizen of Japanese descent. Salador was attending college in 1942 when she was deported to an internment center in Portland, Oregon for U.S. residents who had Japanese ancestry. A current resident of West Islip, where she served as a reading teacher in the public schools, Salador spoke about racism during World War II that led to Pres. Roosevelt’s signing of Executive Order 9066, which authorized the physical removal of all Japanese-Americans living on the West Coast into internment camps. She discussed the discrimination that
existed during the wartime years and emphasized the importance of acceptance and tolerance of all people. She also shared her pride in being an American citizen and pointed out that over 40 years later, the federal government passed the Civil Rights Act of 1988, which apologized for the mistake it had made and provided monetary compensation to the survivors of the internment camps.” “It was heartening to me to observe this group of young people, who were intensely interested in the circumstances of this injustice that took place approximately 76 years ago,” Salador said. “I was happy to inform them that the U.S. government admitted they made a mistake and took responsibility for it.”
West Babylon School District celebrated its homecoming during the weekend of October 20th with activities that brought the whole community together to root on the Eagles. To kick off the festivities, West Babylon Senior High School held its pep rally on evening of October 19th. On October 20th, the homecoming parade made its way down Little East Neck Road. Led by the marching band, the parade featured elementary and junior
high students, high school clubs and organizations, the homecoming court, sports teams and the floats created by the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes, themed after different countries. Prior to the start of the football game against the Rocky Point Eagles, seniors from the football and cheer teams were announced and escorted to the field to be recognized. On Tuesday, October 2nd, the Suffolk County Legislature voted to approve Procedural Motion 13, which authorizes the County Division of Real Property to make an offer to purchase four parcels of land off of Whiskey Road in Middle Island owned by Stone Point Group, LLC, for open space acquisition. Legislator Anker moved forward the acquisition process in an effort to preserve this environmentally sensitive property. The preservation efforts are supported by local community members, environmental groups, and the Middle Island
Civic Association. The parcels will be purchased in partnership with the Town of Brookhaven with the County contributing 70% of the purchase price and the Town contributing 30%. “I am proud to be part of the Suffolk County Legislature which has taken a strong lead in acquiring and protecting environmentally sensitive properties to protect our natural ecosystems and our vulnerable groundwater aquifer,” stated Legislator Sarah Anker. The County will now send an offer letter to the owners of the property, who will
have 60 days to respond. If the owner accepts the offer, the County will go into contract and prepare an Environmental Site Assessment to determine if site remediation must occur before the County can close on the sale. The purchase will undergo a review by the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) and an acquisition resolution must then be approved by the Legislature before the County can close on the sale of the property.
