Lions Quest have been proven to decrease problem behaviors while increasing academic achievement, pro-social behaviors and connectedness to family and school. The program includes a carefully sequenced elementary, middle school and high school curriculum and helpful guidelines for parent meetings, service learning strategies and a school climate committee. The grant will be used to subsidize the cost of training Long Island teachers and administrators in the implementation of this program, which helps reduce the cost to school districts and taxpayers. This means that every college needs a class full of athletes, academic giants and leaders, among various other classifications. Gone are the days where the jack-of-all-trades student could virtually assure him/herself of acceptance anywhere. Now, the student that is well versed in one particular trade is arguably more appealing to an admissions officer. In addition to excelling in a particular field, a student can benefit from a “legacy situation.” This jargon

My parents went to SUNY Oneonta, so if I applied there, theoretically, I would have the edge over an identical candidate with parental ties to SUNY Oswego. Photographs & Still Frames By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am what I suppose you would classify as “slightly” obsessed with photography. Everywhere I travel, whether for the first time or the fiftieth, I am constantly on the lookout for interesting angles, landscapes, candid shots… anything that happens to catch my eye. There is something about preserving the moment that has always appealed to my sense of historical appreciation – because, after all, the second a moment has passed, it is, theoretically, history. This is not to say that every one of the thousands of photos in my digital archive would necessarily qualify as “art” or even as particularly significant to anyone but me. They are just part of the vast collection of snippets from my life, of those close to me, of the places I have been, the

events I have attended – all easily accessible whenever I, or anyone else, is in the mood for a little trip down memory lane. One would think, with such an interest in the art of photography, that I might invest in a “real” camera at some point, rather than relying solely on the somewhat questionable quality of my digital smartphone, portable and convenient as it is. And while, yes, an assortment of lenses and tools would certainly improve the technical quality, there is definitely something to be said for being able to instantly capture the scene before you. With the recent influx of social media outlets such as Facebook and Instagram, there seems to be a newfound obsession with instantly sharing every photo taken, especially among those of the younger generation. While I can appreciate a good photo as much as the next person, there is

such a thing as overkill. Case in point: I recently traveled to Ireland over the summer on what was my first “real” trip – on a plane, overseas, to a land full of countless photo ops. I took what amounted (after many retakes and deletions) to about 800 photos over the course of eight days. Had I taken a cue from the masses out on Facebook, all 800 of those pictures would have been instantly uploaded the second my feet touched American soil. Instead, I managed to narrow it down to maybe a dozen of my favorites. I’m sure all my social media “friends” and “followers” thank me for that. Photography will always be something of a passion for me. And why not? Someday, all those seemingly meaningless photos will be quite significant. Better to capture those moments now.

Councilman John Cochrane, Jr., liaison to Islip Economic Development, made special mention of Fairway Manor, Inc. and J&A Apron and Towel Service Corp. for the special efforts they made to their local communities in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. “All across our community we saw people and businesses stepping up to help those who lost part of their livelihoods during Hurricane Sandy,” said Councilman John

Quilt Completed

This past winter, the East Islip/Dowling SchoolBusiness Partnership joined with East Islip Middle School and three of the district’s elementary schools to work on a special Cancer Awareness Quilt in honor of World Cancer Day. Sixth-grade students in Dani Franzese’s family and consumer science classes learned sewing during the school year, including the basic skill

of sewing buttons, which they demonstrated to students from Connetquot, John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools. The older and younger students together sewed buttons on fabric in the shape of color-coded cancer-awareness ribbons. The middle schoolers then worked to create one large combined quilt, which was finally completed in June with the aid of tailor Vicente

Vasquez, an East Islip parent and custodial employee at East Islip High School. “If it were not for Mr. Vasquez, this quilt would never be constructed,” said Franzese. The finished Cancer Awareness Quilt will be presented at the East Islip Board of Education’s November 14th business meeting.

The four executive administrative team members from the East Islip International Business Globalization Career Academy’s new VE Connected virtual company – CEO Thea Tsolamitis, COO Frank Argenti, CFO Domenick Barbato and CSO Anthony Diesu – represented East Islip at the Virtual Enterprises International trade show on October 1st, held at Hofstra University. The four young East Islip executives sold over $100,000 worth of magazine advertising

and Web membership for their new firm, which supplies advertising for all of the firms in the Virtual Enterprise International program. They also met several distinguished professional leaders at the event, including New York State Education Department Deputy Commissioner Ken Slentz. “Our students did a fantastic job promoting their firm for over seven hours, networking with the other schools and showcasing East Islip’s new virtual company and what it has to offer the

general public as well as all of the VE firms around the world,” said Career Academy director Israel Malinowitzer. “This was the very first time that such an event took place only one month after school started, and East Islip was one of only five school districts that was ready to showcase their VE business at the trade show. The VE program is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn how to operate a company and make decisions that they feel will be in the best interest of their firm.”

Principal Flute

Leah Stevens, a senior at East Islip High School, has been selected as principal flute of the 2013 NAfME All-National Honor Symphony Orchestra, sponsored by the National Association for Music Education. She will join more than 670 of the most musically talented high school studentmusicians in the United States to perform on Oct. 30 at a gala concert in the Presidential Ballroom of the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tenn. Organized by members of the National Association for Music Education, the NAfME All-National Honors Ensembles consist of a concert band, symphony orchestra, mixed chorus and jazz ensemble. These exceptional students will perform extremely challenging music under the direction of four of the nation’s most prominent

conductors: Dr. Peter Boonshaft, Miriam Burns, Rollo Dilworth and Rodney Whitaker. The symphony orchestra that Stevens will perform with is comprised of approximately 150 selected instrumentalists, all of whom had previously qualified for their statelevel honor ensemble program. Stevens had performed last December as principal flute in New York’s All-State Symphonic Band and in April at NAfME’s Eastern Division Conference. “I am so honored to be selected,” says Stevens, a member of the school’s Tri-M Music Honor Society. “It’s the best way to summarize the achievements this year that I have worked so hard for.” Added Stephen Guarino, East Islip’s director of art and music, “Leah is our first principal flutist to make All-National, and we are very proud of her accomplishments.” Stevens, ranked fourth in her senior Class of 2014, was recently named one of 20 award winners of the Long Island Arts Alliance Scholar-Artist program, a prestigious award given annually to top Long Island seniors who have demonstrated a successful school career

both academically and artistically. As one of five winners in the “What the Arts Mean to Me” contest, selected from hundreds of applicants worldwide, her “Imagine Life Without Music” video will be showcased at national arts schools and conservatories including the Juilliard School, Rice University and the National Young Arts Foundation. Although much of her development was gained from her work during summers, weekends and evenings, studying at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege and Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, and private lessons with Metropolitan Opera Orchestra principal flute Stefan Hoskuldsson, Stevens takes great pride in East Islip’s music department. “No school day would be complete without the support and guidance I receive from my teachers and peers in the music wing,” she said. “It’s a part of this school that continues to thrive and provide a platform of success for so many students, including myself.” Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

AP courses, which earn college credit for high school students, are graded on a scale of 1 to 5, with a score of 3 or above qualifying students for college course credit. Timber Point Elementary School students in art teacher Christina SperaBartlett’s classroom recently participated in a seasonal skeleton project that incorporated many aspects of the Common Core State Standards. The students explored the bones of the human

skeletal system, learning the shapes as well as the scientific names for each bone. They then worked collaboratively to create artistic representations of the bone shapes, measuring their work against each other to determine the correct sizing and proportions

On Thursday night, November 14th, from 7:30 to 9 p.m., Venturing Crew 777 of Holbrook/Ronkonkoma (with Members from Shirley to Babylon) will be holding its membership recruitment at the Cherokee Street School, 130 Cherokee Street in Ronkonkoma. Crew 777 is a co-ed Boy Scout unit for young men and ladies between the ages of 14-20. While focused on the outdoors, they also take part in other non-outdoor activities and community service. Trips have included: Backpacking in Colorado and New Mexico, canoeing through the interior of Alaska, kayaking, sailing and biking on South Padre Island, whitewater rafting in West Virginia, and caving. The crew’s 2014 trip is being planned with visions on a sailing trip to the Bahamas, kayaking in North Carolina or taking part in a Swamp Trek in Louisiana.
