The Complicated Connection Between Black Cats, Witches And Halloween symbols of Halloween. Black cats have become synonymous with Halloween decor, but few may know how this association came to be. According to History. com, the notion of black cats as bad omens can be traced to the Middle Ages. Back then, people believed witches avoided detection by turning themselves into black cats.

The perception of black cats as something more than mere felines may even pre-date the Middle Ages. For example, in Norse mythology, Freyja, a goddess of, among other things, a type of Late Scandinavian Iron Age magic known as “Seior,” was believed to have ridden a chariot pulled by two cats. That connection to sorcery could explain the

link between black cats and witches that continues to be made today. Despite the lengthy history suggesting black cats are bad omens, it’s not all bad for these dark-colored felines. One

researcher at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History found that Welsh folklore depicted black cats as harbingers of good luck, and even noted their ability to predict the weather. Black cats are one

of many symbols of Halloween. And much like jack-o’-lanterns and trickor-treating, the story of how black cats came to be associated with Halloween is interesting and thoughtprovoking.

Historical Society of Islip Hamlet On Thursday, Oct. 28th, the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet hosts author Amy Folk and her presentation on her book “Murder on Long Island”. In 1854 Cutchogue a local farmer and his wife - James and Frances Wickham were found murdered in their home, butchered with on ax. Blame for the murder fell on one of

their farm hands, Irish immigrant Nicholas Behan, who had been fired. The murder not only shocked and horrified the local community but also throughout the northeast of the US. Details were eventually forgotten. Come learn what really happened in Cutchogue in 1854! The program will be held

The Islip Public Schools Department of Fine and Performing Arts and Islip High School are proud to announce the selection of three students as alternates to the New York State School Music Association All-State Honor Ensembles and eight students who will perform with the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association All-County Vocal Jazz Ensemble. NYSSMA studentmusicians Hannah Evans (flute), Maggie Frazer (voice) and Isabella Green were selected for the All-State Festival based on their performance in the NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival. All-County Vocal Jazz student-musicians Ella Beiser (alto), Lucas Bohr

(bass), Richie Castronova (bass), Leah Cyran (alto), Maggie Frazer (alto), Madelynn Lang (alto), Daniel Rubinson (bass) and Jordyn Zurbaran (alto) were selected through an audition process that took place last spring among hundreds of applicants throughout Suffolk County and New York State. Students prepare for the festivals with the assistance of their school music teachers and then participate in a series of rehearsals that conclude with a concert. The students will have the opportunity to work and perform under the leadership of highly skilled directors from the college music community and the professional music industry. All-State

performances will be held during the NYSSMA Winter Conference in Rochester, on Dec. 2-5. The All-County Vocal Jazz Ensemble will perform at the SCMEA Day of Jazz, held on Nov. 6, at East Islip High School. American vocalist and director of Elvanelle music, Kimberly Hawkey, will work with and conduct participants at the Day of Jazz. “We are extremely thrilled to have these remarkable student musicians representing Islip Schools in the AllState and All-County festivals. Their selection is a testament to their hard work and their teachers’ support,” District Director of Fine and Performing Arts Brian Kroll stated.

Islip Town Councilman Jim O’Connor shared his enthusiasm for supporting this crucial environmental initiative, that also cultivates an aquaculture industry for the local marine to land economy. “The science and economics behind this project are a win-win for the Great South Bay community. Great South Bay Shellfish Cultivation Facility produces high quality clams, oysters,

and kelp for growers from here on the east coast in the Town of Islip to distributors throughout the country,” said Councilman O’Connor. Councilman O’Connor continued, “most importantly, the Great South Bay Shellfish Cultivation Facility along with the Bay Bottom Aquaculture Leasing Program is an important step to saving the Great South Bay. The locally grown Kelp filters out harmful nitrates, which are produced by cesspools, that pollute the Great South Bay. In conjunction, each one of the thousands of clams from the Bay Bottom Leasing program filters out 30 to 50 gallons of

water daily. This is a clean, sustainable, and natural process to remove toxic elements from our natural water sources. We have to do our part to protect Islip’s environment, ecodiversity, and natural resources.” “I commend Supervisor Angie Carpenter and Councilman John Cochrane for their vision and leadership to bring the Great South Bay Shellfish Cultivation Facility and Bay Bottom Leasing Program to the Town of Islip. Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness.

Upon entering the boutique, you can expect to ﬁnd clothing, nonperishable food, new bedding and pillows, personal care and feminine care items, toiletries and much more! The clothing options can range from casual to business attire and there is clothing available in all sizes; infant through adult.

Breast Cancer Survivors Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.

HPV Vaccination Though there may not be a cancer vaccine, that does not mean that vaccinations cannot play a role in cancer prevention. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some cancers, including cervical cancer and cancers of the vulva and oropharynx, are caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV. The CDC notes that the HPV vaccine protects people against the types

of HPV that most often cause cancers. Adults can discuss the benefits of HPV vaccinations with their physicians, as the CDC notes that adults between the ages of 27 and 45 may have already been exposed to HPV, meaning the HPV vaccination will provide less benefit. Parents should know that the CDC recommends the HPV vaccination for preteens aged 11 to 12 years.
