Suffolk County Community College tested its new online application at East Islip High School on October 11th, under the supervision of Suffolk Community Colleges Guidance Officer Cheryl Every-Wurtz. This pilot program marked the first time that high school seniors at the school who were interested in attending SCCC the following year were asked

to go online to complete their applications, allowing the college’s employees to access these students’ applications immediately and thus speeding up the process for the graduating seniors. “East Islip High School has arranged for two visits in the month of October for our students to come down with their electronic notification and meet with the SCCC

Runaway Success

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, hosted its Walk, Run & Ride for Autism on September 29th at the Holtsville Ecology Center. DDI raised over $47,000 to help fund the vital programs and services DDI provides to over 5,000 families served by their educational and residential programs, adult day training and medical services. “This event is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said CoChairman of the event Brian Brunjes. “This year we not only met our financial goal, but we exceeded it. It is inspiring to see the generosity of a community come together

and lend themselves to help benefit thousands of families who need services for their loved ones.” Hundreds of Long Islanders came out for the fun filled day. The day kicked off with the Matthew Stansky Memorial Run followed by a scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County’s Holtsville Ecology Park that featured activities for the entire family along the way. For the second year in a row, the event included a Motorcycle and classic car run sponsored by Hansen Home Designs. The day was capped off with a festival in the park complete with picnic lunch, music, games, a petting zoo and more. This years event Grand Marshals are six recent St. John’s University graduates who spent one week walking 128-miles in

the blistering heat this past May from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Montauk Lighthouse in order to benefit DDI. St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School is pleased to announce the names of 5 students who have been awarded the designation of Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Commended students have earned scores that placed them in the top five percent of all test takers. The Commended Students for 2014 are: Sean Connolly of East Islip Christian Da Luz of East Northport Samantha R. McDonough of Massapequa Sara Michels of Levittown Kevin Wasko of Massapequa The National Merit Scholarship Program is a

nationwide competition for recognition and awards conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Over 1.5 million students took the 2012 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last October. Of all test takers only 34,000 have been awarded the designation of Commended Student. In addition to these five students, Brandon Khoury of Bay Shore was named a 2013-2014 Scholar by the National Hispanic Recognition Program for Excellence in Academic Achievement. The National Hispanic Recognition Program is administered by the College Board and selected 5,300 Hispanic/Latino students from a pool of over 259,000 based on a

combination Preliminary SAT scores a grade point average. “The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation”. Nan Doherty, Principal of St. John’s, added “we are very proud of these students and delighted that their abilities have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.”

Junior Commissioners immediately begin planning their first initiative, an e-waste recycling program. KIC is a not-for-profit community service organization dedicated to a cleaner, prouder Islip Township. Their goals are to positively change behavior through education and example, raise awareness about the effect that an uncaring

attitude toward littering has on our quality of life, and encourage the values of ownership, service and civic responsibility among residents. The Islip School District congratulates inductees Rachel Bahnsen, Nicholas Bates, Daniela D’Acunto, Mackenzie Dymek, Amanda Faux and Natalie Oscher.

The South Shore 4H Club, in conjunction with Keep Islip Clean (KIC), participated in this year’s 28th Annual International Coastal Clean Up. The Cleanup is a global event coordinated by the American Littoral Society and the Ocean Conservancy. The 4H group of 25 members, ages 9-16, cleaned up Quintuck Creek and its surrounding waterways and marshlands in East Islip. The group coordinated 5 boats, with smaller boats run by 4H members that could access the more shallow arms of the creek. “We were extremely surprised that we collected

400 lbs of garbage. We never realized there was so much. It’s hard to believe so many boats just drive right by that much garbage everyday,” says Paul Rodriguez,4H President and Junior at St. Anthony’s High School. The South Shore 4H Club’s mission revolves around environmental stewardship and participation in this event demonstrates global, national and local environmental awareness. Nancy Cochran, Executive Director of KIC, said “This group is amazing. This was probably the best Coastal Clean Up we have ever had. You really

do not know what’s out there that’s harmful to our environment until you make an effort to clean it up.” The group filled KIC member Christian Muller’s 14 foot boat with large garbage bags, four tires and a shop vac!. Muller, 4H Treasurer and 8th grader at The Stony Brook School, commented, “It’s sad to say but we could have kept going and probably filled another boat.” The club recorded every piece of garbage and sent the data to Ocean Conservancy scientists, who track global pollution trends. Academic Honors The National Achievement Scholarship Program recognized Islip High School seniors Budie Kadir and Isabelle Lamarre as a semifinalist and Outstanding Participant, respectively, due to their high academic achievement and success on the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program is an academic competition established in 1964 to provide recognition for outstanding Black American high school students. Of the more than 160,000 students who enter the National Achievement Program each year, approximately 4,700 are honored. Of

those 4,700, only 1,600 participants qualify as semifinalists and continue on in the competition for scholarship awards. In addition to being named a National Achievement semifinalist, Budie was also named a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Walking For Alzheimer’s Following the success of its two previous Walks this summer, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will have its 2nd Annual Westhampton Beach Walk for Alzheimer’s & Fall Festival on October 26th at the Village Green (intersection of Main Street and Mill Road) in Westhampton Beach. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m., followed by the

opening ceremony at 9 a.m. and the Walk at 10 a.m. Lunch and entertainment will follow afterwards at 11:45 a.m. The opening ceremony will feature entertainment by the USO Liberty Bells of New York, recognition of all participating team captains and a Hope Garden ceremony. After the Walk, participants who raise over $100 will be

treated to lunch. There is no registration fee for teams or walkers who raise donations for the Walk. For those who wish to register the day of the Walk, general admission is $25.00 for adults, $10.00 for teens, and $5.00 for children two years of age and older. Children under 2 are free. Family discount packages (two adults and two children) are available

for $30. All the proceeds will go to support ADRC’s mission to fight the dreaded disease. Make Time To Spend A Moment With Family As we head into the holiday season, it is crucial to realize just how caught up we can get in the trickor-treating, gift buying and pumpkin carving. Sure, these things are important, but the true measure of a successful holiday is the quality of the memories we create with our family. Some of my fondest memories took place around a Christmas Tree. Others derived from the carving of the turkey. More still were captured while dressed up in Halloween garb with my mom, dad and little brother. I vividly remember being carried in my father’s arms, dressed as a pumpkin, while my brother was in

his stroller, dressed as a pea! As Halloween is right around the corner, our minds shouldn’t be focused on getting to Christmas, but enjoying the ride. Each day is a blessing. Throughout my seventeen years on this Earth, I have learned many things. To me, the most important tidbit is that: “In today’s society, the family unit is broken up. When we’d sit down to dinner together as a family, we’d learn about each other. We had something people don’t get today.” This quote from Paul Prudhomme exemplifies what experts have been saying all along. The simplest social

group, the family, has been torn apart by modern happenings. In school, I take a class called Sociology, in which we learn that the most powerful group is a family. Weber, Marx and countless other sociologists have their own view on the family unit. All of them unanimously agree that, without those related to us by blood, we would be nothing. Keeping in contact with those we care about is especially crucial around the holidays. Throughout all of the gift-giving and traditions, find time to spend a moment with those you love, your family.
