The 2021 Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta & Soirée took place on Saturday, September 18 on the Great South Bay followed immediately by what is quickly becoming an annual favorite celebration at the Long Island Yacht Club benefiting local environmental non-profit Save The Great South Bay. One of the largest sailboat races on the Great South Bay, the Mayor’s Cup is organized by the Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association in association with the South Bay Cruising Club. Returning Race Committee Chair John Davis oversaw the 7.8 nautical mile course which proved a tough battle for the skippers and their crews. The light and variable winds, that changed direction multiple times throughout the race, made for very difficult conditions to keep the boats sailing.

Then The Celebration…. The Soirée Directly following the Regatta and set to a stunning background with views to the Robert Moses Bridge, this year’s celebration was presented by York Analytical Laboratories at the Long Island Yacht Club. Celebrants were treated to live music by the ever-popular No Request Band along with tasty seafood delights served up by Bill and Maureen Zeller of Captree Clam. Under beautiful blue skies, Chuck Westfall of Thatch Island Oysters shucked hundreds of fresh Great South Bay oysters and guests dined on tasty treats from Coastal Kitchen, Mary Carroll’s, Ristorante Gemelli, Village Meat Market and Southside Fish and Clam. As they raised funds to support the organization’s three core programs, guests enjoyed an exclusive tasting of beautifully aged armagnacs and cognac with local importer Larry Reiter of Columbus Wine and Spirits. Others had their fortunes told by the Collective Consciousness of Oakdale. The Yacht Club’s grounds were decorated with a wide selection of native trees,

bushes and plants donated by Long Island Natives. The plants were repurposed to build a native garden in Amityville’s Nautical Park after the event.

Remembering the Past, Celebrating the Present The 2021 Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta was dedicated in memory of former Babylon Village Mayor Ralph A. Scordino who sadly passed away in October 2020. Mayor Scordino was a longtime supporter of the Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta and an avid supporter of Save The Great South Bay, 501(c)3. Current Babylon Village Mayor Mary Adams spoke of her predecessor’s love of the Bay and commitment to the environment. Congratulations to grand prize winner Jay Price who won the 9’ 6” Paddleboard donated by Karen Marvin of South Shore Paddle Board. A Multi-Class Regatta Captain Rick Latorre and his crew aboard Dark Star won line honors and came in first place in the Spinnaker Division. Eric Winberry and crew aboard Aleboat came in second place. The Non Spinning Division was won by a great sailing performance by Gary Sebouhian and his crew aboard S/V Pandemonium. Second place boat was Merry Ann and crew followed by Ed Anderson’s boat At Last. The Cruising Division was won by Chris Demmarco who sailed single handedly and was the only boat in his division to complete the race in such light wind. The Multi hull boats were sailing all over the racecourse looking for wind and was won by

Kim Schaefer and his crew on the Trimaran Trillium. Their competition was close behind aboard the Trimaran Getting There. There were a total of 15 boats racing in the four classes. The Charity of the Month for October is

Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was founded in 1985. Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness.

They are currently looking for volunteers who are organized, fun and dedicated to sort and display items at the Boutique. Even giving just a few hours of your time can be a huge help. Additionally, they are in need of various donations. The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares.

The Community Garden program also incorporates the preparation of healthy meals made from organic ingredients. Members also learn to cook and enjoy various new dishes. The garden planning and planting happens from JanuaryNovember, so now is a great time to learn and get involved before you can get busy planning and planting! The clothing options can range from casual to business attire and there is clothing available in all sizes; infant through adult.

Garden Club. Their Garden Club holds meetings, where members decide what to plant and grow, while learning about various aspects of organic gardening. Anyone who is interested in gardening is welcomed by this Garden Club to volunteer with them. Volunteers can attend to the basic gardening by helping to weed, till, harvest and more, build vertical and raised beds and more.

Girl Scout Silver Award Candidate Kiersten Galli is a Keep Islip Clean volunteer on a mission. She has done an impressive amount of volunteer work to earn a Girl Scout Silver Award and her community is the better for it. Through a linked series of projects, Kiersten showed her commitment to a clean environment, as she completed recycling, education and litter cleanup activities, mainly in her home town of Islip Terrace. An ambitious recycling project involved collecting and redeeming 2809 cans/ bottles, in just two weeks. This work resulted in a much needed donation to KIC of 1126 garbage bags and 1572 disposable gloves. She bought these supplies with $350 earned through recycling, several donations and a $50 coupon from Home Depot in Central Islip. In addition to her recycling work, Kiersten created a brochure packed with information about litter, recycling and KIC. She presented this

information to fellow Girl Scouts, and KIC will use the brochure for educational outreach. Participating in numerous litter cleanups added the final touch to her good work. “Kiersten is a remarkable young lady,” said KIC

Executive Director Nancy Cochran. “She gave a tremendous amount of time and effort to improve her community and benefit a local not-for-profit organization. I’m grateful for her good deeds.”

East Islip HS Celebrates Inclusion During Start With Hello Week

East Islip High School recently devoted a week to exploring the Sandy Hook Promise’s Start With Hello Week, an age-appropriate program geared toward students of all ages that stresses the importance of positivity with various themes and events, each day focusing on inclusivity and anti-bullying. The week at the high school began on Sept. 20, with a visit from Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department representatives, who discussed the “See Something, Say

Something” program with students during physical education classes. The representatives spoke about the importance of being vigilant and reaching out to fellow classmates, and raised awareness about social isolation. Throughout the week, over 75 students assisted in hanging up positive banners, posters and sticky notes on lockers around the building, and the National Art Honor Society created an Instagram picture board for students to take selfies with during lunch periods.

“This past year and a half, students all over have lived through so much,” Assistant Principal Jean Marie D’Aversa said. “The Start With Hello program teaches them how our strength lies in celebrating each one of our differences, not our similarities. If we can begin this year fostering a mindset of inclusion and acceptance, then we can start on a path where we grow together as a building and we come back stronger than ever.”

Weather is hard to predict. Meteorologists have many tools at their disposal to help forecast storms and other phenomena, but it is impossible to predict the weather with 100 percent accuracy. When the weather takes a turn for the worse, the National Weather Service may issue certain notices to prepare the public. Understanding

the level of threat a notice carries can help people take appropriate action and avoid serious consequences. The NWS uses a fourtier system to alert the public of hazards. Here’s a closer look at what each tier constitutes.

Save the Great South Bay, a local 501(c)3 environmental nonprofit, recently teamed up with the Town of Babylon’s Department of Environmental Control installing a unique Bandalong Bandit Litter Trap along the Carll’s River to passively capture floating litter and debris before it flows into the Bay. The litter trap was donated by Gerogia-based Stormwater Systems after outreach by organization member Walt Meshenberg. The trap passively collects floatables 24/7/365 using only the natural current. It also features a patented tidal gate which prevents trash from exiting the trap without netting or fencing making it safe for all aquatic wildlife. Eric Hewlett of Stormwater Systems who was on hand to help out with the install said it was true to form with other installs he has done around the country. “This is another stormwater strategy for collecting floatables in our watershed system,
