There are those who contend that things were far simpler before technology invaded our daily lives and made us dependent upon electronic devices glued to our hands. In some respects, yes, absolutely. But the benefits are not to be so lightly dismissed. Case in point: the recent avalanche of new smartphones which have been released. What’s the difference between one model and the next? Is it worth the money invested? In reality, not much, and no. But as a society, we have been conditioned to want the next big thing, at whatever the cost. It’s become more of a status symbol than a matter of functionality.

For me, the selling point of a smartphone, initially, was to have the ability to text using a full keyboard, rather than one button at a time, letter by tedious letter. I was extremely late to the party, in that respect, having held on to my cherished flip phone for far longer than most in my age bracket. But once I upgraded, there was no going back. Fast forward several years, and my motivation isn’t the slightly larger screen, the slightly longer battery life or a new collection of apps and emojis – it is, quite simply, the camera. My love of photography, while always a passion, has never been complemented by an equally-adequate camera. After reading the reviews of the latest iPhone, it seemed to be a no-brainer to invest

the money into a two-forone deal – a state-of-the-art phone coupled with a camera that earned the praises of numerous professional photographers. And so I took the plunge. And it was worth it. All the downfalls the previous camera had been plagued with, eliminated. Low light, zoom, clarity… now vastly improved upon. It may not seem like much to those who yearn for the simplicity of the days of the rotary phone; but, for me, it is everything. And so I embark on my next photographic pursuit, new phone/camera in hand, embracing the technology which surrounds us. Sometimes, the function does outweigh the downfall after all.

Remote Robot The East Islip School District received funding in 2014 from New York State Sen. Phil Boyle which was used to purchase a VGo robot to assist in the instructional program for student Ryan Norton. VGo technology serves to open up academic and social environments to ill, disabled and immunedeficient students, allowing them to see, hear,

talk and move as they remotely attend classes via their homes. Norton, an eighth grader at East Islip Middle School, has atypical cystic fibrosis and cannot regularly attend classes in person. Using the VGo robot to virtually participate in lessons, he is able to remain engaged with both school and community, an important factor for both

health and education. “The VGo robot gives our students in need, like Ryan, the ability to interact with fellow classmates and the classroom teacher,” said Superintendent John V. Daniel Joseph Ruland successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on April 20th, officially making him the 58th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip, and Islip Terrace. Daniel’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Saturday, November 26th, starting at 11 a.m. at Timber Point Elementary School,

200 Timber Point Road in East Islip. Daniel is currently a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski and formally of Troop 508 – with Scoutmaster Dr. William Pomerantz. On his “road to Eagle,” Daniel has served Troop 205 as Troop Guide and Patrol Leader. Daniel has had many unique Scouting experiences, including attending and participating in National Boy Scout High Adventure - Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, NM, where Daniel and his crew backpacked, hiked, and camped in the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountain Range of the 210 square mile facility. Daniel also attended two different Boy Scout

Summer Camps - both Camp Minsi and NoBeBoSco and had wonderful Scouting adventures to Washington, D.C., Gettysburg, and a multitude of camping weekends on Long Island. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. Daniel has actually earned a total of 27 merit badges. The Service Project that Daniel developed, planned, and constructed with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was two dugouts at the Little League Fields

in East Islip - protecting the players from the sun and inclement weather. As Daniel reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “I know as long as I follow the Scout Laws and Scout Oath in my everyday life, my goals can become a reality.” Daniel graduated from the East Islip High School this last spring, where he was very involved with sports. Daniel was on the J.V. and Varsity Football Teams, and won the Suffolk County Championship in 2014 and were runners up in 2015. He was also on the J.V. and Varsity Baseball Teams. Daniel was awarded the Scholar Athlete for the last two years, while also being awarded with the White Letter Award for having the highest overall GPA on the Varsity Football Team as a Senior. He also played on the high school Lacrosse team as well as baseball for the Little League of the Islip’s Senior League, and Travel Teams. While in high school, Daniel was a member of the Environmental Academy, the Environmental Club and the SADD Club. Daniel is currently a Freshman at Virginia Tech, where he is studying and majoring in Building Construction. Upon college graduation Daniel would like to enter the US Military. He is a proud recipient of an Army ROTC National

FIDELIS OPENS DOORS - New York State Health Plan FIDELIS CARE celebrated the grand opening of their Bay Shore Community Office on Long Island on October 11th. Fidelis Care serves over 1.5 million members statewide and has 17 community offices, with 13 specifically in the New York City area, where local residents may speak to a representative in their language and have all their health insurance questions answered.
