Greta’s passion for service took hold at a young age. Upon reading a Newsday article highlighting the demand for food, the 11-year-old was shocked to learn that many Long Island families would not be able to enjoy special Thanksgiving dinners. Inspired to take action and make a difference, she wrote a letter to friends and raised enough money to buy at least 100 turkeys… in just two days. On the morning of September 20th, seven students at East Islip High School’s International Business Globalization Career Academy arrived for an interview process to decide who would be the next chief executive officer of the Academy’s newly created virtual company known as VE Connected. The candidates were prepared for a rigorous interviewing process in front of a six-person panel, including two teachers, one administrator, two business leaders and an executive director from a post-secondary school. “The candidates came dressed in adult business attire with resumes in hand, ready to be questioned on many different levels to determine which would be best suited for the 20132014 CEO position,” said Career Academy director Israel Malinowitzer. After a grueling two hours of interviews, Thea Tsolamitis was selected by a unanimous vote as this year’s virtual enterprise CEO. On the same day, another five Business Academy students vied for the chance to be chosen as the virtual company’s chief financial officer. A tough interview process by the same panel, including questions on finance, spending and inventory purchasing, yielded another unanimous decision. Domenick Barbato was selected as the virtual firm’s CFO, overseeing the accounting department.

According to Malinowitzer, the arduous selection process resulted in two additional leadership positions, as part of the Executive Administrative Committee. “The interviews were so electrifying that the panel

Sibling Bragging Rights

On a recent Saturday, the SJB Crew Team competed at the Brickyard 5000. The day started out like any other, with the first few races running smoothly. As the day wore on, the wind picked up and the already rough Hudson River turned into a series of veritable tsunamis. My race, the Varsity Eight, the last heat of the day, was running right on time. The course had been shortened, and I was to compete head to head with my little brother. As we paddled out, I knew I could not let him win for the sake of bragging rights. We knew the water was rough, but we also knew we were ready. As we spun the boat and got underway, the crack of the oars hitting

the water signaled the start of our very brief rivalry. In that moment, I wanted nothing more than to beat my brother. After the first few hundred meters, we were ahead and gaining, but after a few minutes, that all changed. As we slightly altered our course, a huge wave crashed over our port side, flooding the boat. We were still afloat, but the added water weight made every stroke less productive. With every stroke, my brother’s boat was gaining and we were taking on more water. Coming into the final two hundred meters, we were still in the lead, but barely. It was close, but we had them by about a boat length. Then, our Cox had us suddenly stop rowing.

From the back of the boat, I couldn’t make out what she was saying. One by one, I saw the boys in front of me jump out of the boat and into the Hudson. Panicked, I jumped out too. Our boat had sunk, and we were floating in the middle of one of the roughest waters in New York. As we watched my brother swiftly finish, we realized that we had lost. Sure, it was on mere luck, but he was the one toting the Gold Medal. Embarrassed, we boarded the Haverstraw Fire Department’s boat. I had lost, to my brother no less. Even though I was sad we didn’t finish, I was happy at least one of the Cianciulli boys was bringing home the gold for SJB Crew.

Historic Trail Unveiled Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron today launched a brand new, interactive component to the current Town of Islip website which highlights the newly established Historic Islip Trail, as well as a corresponding brochure and map. Flotteron spearheaded the first-ofits-kind history project for Islip as part of his continuing effort to aggressively market the Town as a destination for both tourists and residents alike. Users of the new website component will enjoy a Google maps feature from both their PC’s and mobile devices. The Councilman was joined by historians, historical society leaders, and Town officials as he introduced the Historic Islip Trail website and brochure to the public at a press conference held at the former Wereholme Weekes Estate – now home to the Seatuck Association – on South Bay Avenue in Islip. The Estate is also listed as one of more than 30 historic places of interest identified in the Islip Historic Trail. During the press conference, Councilman Flotteron explained the origins of the project before giving a brief demonstration on how to navigate the website. “I am extremely proud of this interactive website and historic brochure. The project has been a labor of love

over these past few years, but one in which I strongly believed because of its usefulness to residents and tourists,” said Flotteron. “As a parent, I often found there to be a lack of historical marketing material available when I was helping my children with research. I knew

information was out there, but it just wasn’t easily accessible to the general public. Flotteron’s frustrations prompted him to enlist the help of Bay Shore resident, Patrick Valdini, who was studying history and visual arts at the time, to create a historical map that would identify some of the most

significant places of history within the Town. Islip Historian Jack Whitehouse also got involved, serving as both researcher and writer. “In Islip Town we are fortunate to have a rich and diverse past, a remarkable historical narrative mirroring our nation’s progress from its earliest days to the present,” said Whitehouse. “The Historic Islip Trail website and map capture our most outstanding historic sites providing an easy reference to help us learn from our past.” Significant about the Historic Islip Trail, Flotteron said, is that it was created without using any taxpayer money. “I am grateful to both Patrick Valdini and Jack Whitehouse for the countless hours that they contributed in making the Historic Islip Trail a reality. I also want to thank Rich Carpenter of ACT Communications for designing and printing the historic map as a donation to the Town.” The Historic Islip Trail can be found on the Town’s website at www.townofslip-ny.gov, by clicking on the Tourism and History on the Home Page. The map and brochure will be available at several public venues, including Islip Town Hall and Long Island MacArthur Airport.

At East Islip High School’s traditional Senior Ranking Day morning event on October 4th, the top 10 students of the school’s Class of 2014 were recognized for their superlative academic achievements. The topranked student and future valedictorian of the Class of 2014 was announced as William Meehan, with an remarkable weighted GPA of 111.116. Ranking second was Grant Stroehlein, the future salutatorian, who scored a 107.252 weighted GPA. The remaining top 10 students, all in attendance and jubilant at their achievement, were Christina Giordanella in third place (106.66 weighted GPA), Leah Stevens in fourth (106.583), Maria Guadagno in fifth (105.663),

The annual ceremony began shortly after 9 a.m., when the curious seniors and East Islip Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer convened in the guidance department’s conference room. After the rankings were read, the students were congratulated by Superintendent of Schools Linda J. Rozzi, Assistant Principal Nicholas Bilotti and the school’s guidance counselors. “We are so proud of these students who exhibit excellence in academics

and an overall well-rounded educational platform,” said Rozzi. “We have no doubt that they will continue to excel after their high school years and beyond.” The ceremony was followed by a celebratory bagel breakfast and excited telephone calls from the students to their proud parents. “These students have challenged themselves throughout their high school years and continue to take AP and honors courses,” said Malinowitzer. “They have shared the last four years in many of the same classes and have formed a mutual respect for one another. Today they were all very proud of each other and shared breakfast as they finally had some time to relax and enjoy the moment. William has also been active in sports during his school years in the East Islip School District, including playing linebacker on the Varsity Footbal Team, soccer at the East Islip Soccer Club and baseball with the Town of Islip. Community service has been important to William, as he has logged 63.3 community service hours, including helping at a soup kitchen in Brentwood, volunteering at South Side Hospital and various Boy Scout community service projects. William Joseph Farrell successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review in March, officially making him the 44th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River. William’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Sunday, November 3rd, starting at 1 p.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timberpoint Road in East Islip. William is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “road to Eagle,” William has served the troop as Assistant Patrol Leader and Den Chief for Cub Scout Pack 205. William is also a member of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout Honorary Camping Society. He has also earned the following BSA Awards: Emergency Preparedness, Kayaking and SCUBA. William has had many unique Scouting experiences,

including being a member of the contingent to the West Point Military Academy Camporee, Troop 205 trips to Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Gettysburg and Boston. william has also attended summer camp at Camp Wakpominee in Fort Ann, NY for five summer seasons. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 Merit Badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements - from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop and implement a major Service Project for the community. The Service Project that William conducted with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was the design and development of the beautiful outdoor team photo area at the East Islip Soccer Club in East Islip that has and continues to be used by the Club and teams season after season. As William reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “My time in Troop 205 has given me access to some of the best times of my life. I have been to Summer Camp at Camp Wakpominee for five summers and have made great friends. Many of the merit badges I earned there have given me life-long skills.” William is a Senior at East Islip High School, where he is on the school’s Science Honor Society and Language Honor Society. He serviced on the East Islip academic team, and also attends the Medical Career Academy at East Islip High School. His plan after school will be to attend college to major in a science discipline in a premed program to fulfill his life-long goal to become a physician or surgeon. William worked the past two summer seasons as a camp counselor for the Town of Islip.

Forever An Original By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Albert Capraro, Lindenhurst High School Class of 1961 graduate, Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976 and personal designer of choice to none other than First Lady Betty Ford, passed away on October 8th, 2013 following a brief illness. I consider myself lucky to have made his acquaintance and privileged to have interviewed him for a proﬁle for this very column several years ago. Following are excerpts from my original piece, published October 11th, 2006 ... Mr. Capraro’s path to success began to take shape way back in high school while walking the halls of Lindy. His influences ranged from several members of the art department to his beloved guidance counselor, all of whom nurtured his already-outstanding talent for both fashion and film, even going so far

as to attend the “fashion shows” and “movie premieres” he would put on at his home. After graduating from the prestigious Parsons School of Design, Mr. Capraro landed his first job working with a French designer on Park Avenue. He then moved on to a position with noted designer Joberie, headquartered on Seventh Avenue - Fashion Avenue. From there, he catapulted to the opportunity of a lifetime, working with Oscar de la Renta - his “mentor” - with whom he flourished for eight glorious years. Mr. Capraro eventually started up his own label, of which his first collection was quite a success. As he dryly observed, “I was an ‘overnight’ sensation after ten years.” However, it was exactly this achievement which provided the necessary steppingstone from which there would be no turning back. After reading a favorable review of his clothing line, First

Lady Betty Ford invited Mr. Capraro to a personal consultation at the White House. And the rest, as they say, is history. Through the years, he designed for a vast collection of women, including the likes of Julie Andrews, Marlo Thomas, Sophia Loren, Barbara Walters, Marissa Tomei and several of the Miss Americas. In 1976, he accomplished the “hat trick” of being the simultaneous designer-of-choice for Miss America 1976, First Lady Betty Ford and American Ambassador Ann Armstrong, helping to crown him with his most-cherished title of Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976. For a man whose designs now qualify as “vintage” on E-bay; for someone who used to regularly mingle with all walks of stars, he comes away from the whole experience with one sentiment that stands above the rest: “Ego doesn’t work.” As a result, Mr. Capraro

finds himself equally comfortable designing costumes for a Hicksville High School theatre production – which he has done several times – as he did while living the lavish life of limousines, champagne, starstudded galas and black-tie affairs ... all words which are still “music to (his) ears.” The man who was originally inspired to design by Princess Grace’s wedding gown and who recently donated the original mannequin and about twenty of his designs worn by the First Lady to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, now lives by the simplest of mottos: “Pursue and persist ... Love what you’re doing.” What a lovely person. What outstanding accomplishments. And to think it began all those years ago in the halls of Lindy High School. His is a story that deserves to be shared. And admired by all.

They form a canopy below the heavens, allowing no display of warm, azure sky. Perhaps soon we will experience precipitation in the form of rain. But now, behold, on the far horizon, one sees several stratocumulus clouds revealing their puffy, hoary cotton balls And I fantasize a desire and urge, like a lad, to jump and frolic upon them. When once more the sky appears blue like the calm waters of a tepid tropical sea, I am restored again, breathing deeply and at ease, achieving a state of elation and high spirits. It is the sky’s indigo light and the crepuscular rays of sunshine passing in and through the diaphanous clouds which bestirs one to vibrant fervor and eagerness for life.

Playing off the fact that the words “aunt” and “ant” are homophones, they also delved into Dan Crisp’s song and book “The Ants SPORTS DAY - And they’re off! Fifth-graders at Commack Road Elementary School Go Marching,” bringing kick off the rescue relay activity during the school’s third annual Sports Day. as the Aunt character did in the Feierbend story – which were later put on display at Timber Point.
