Great South Bay Townships Unite With Northwell Health For Annual Pink By The Bay Campaign Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Town Clerk Gerry Compitello and Receiver of Taxes Jennifer Montiglio recently gathered with Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, representatives from Northwell Health and other community health activists for the kickoff to the third annual Pink by the Bay Northwell Health campaign to bring breast cancer awareness into our Great South Bay communities. October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual

international campaign to shine light on the impact of breast cancer and show support for those who have been affected by the disease. “On Long Island alone, over 2,600 women are affected by breast cancer every year, 17 percent of them between the towns of Babylon and Islip,” according to Dr. Deb Salas-Lopez, senior vice president of community and population health at Northwell. “The point of this whole campaign is to raise awareness of breast health in men and women during

not just the month of October, but year round,” said Town Clerk Gerry Compitello. “We hope to see that the color pink will serve as a reminder to each and every one of you just to get checked.” This October, over 200 businesses within Babylon and Islip towns will participate in Pink by the Bay by shining pink lights and hanging pink ribbons. At Babylon Town Hall, the cupola will be illuminated pink throughout the month in commemoration of breast cancer awareness.

Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was originally founded in 1985 as a grassroots local advocacy effort to bring nonproﬁts and other community partners together to unite around the cause of homelessness, seeking to expand and enhance services to meet local needs. As a small local entity, LICH has always relied on partnerships and joint efforts in order to adequately provide support for those that were experiencing homelessness on Long Island.

Historical Society of Islip Hamlet On Thursday, Oct. 28th, the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet hosts author Amy Folk and her presentation on her book “Murder on Long Island”. In 1854 Cutchogue a local farmer and his wife - James and Frances Wickham were found murdered in their home, butchered with on ax. Blame for the murder fell on one of

their farm hands, Irish immigrant Nicholas Behan, who had been fired. The murder not only shocked and horrified the local community but also throughout the northeast of the US. Details were eventually forgotten. Come learn what really happened in Cutchogue in 1854! The program will be held

The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Long Islanders Come Out in Force To Support PSEG Long Island’s Power To Feed Long Island Initiative

PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island initiative has exceeded its goal, raising the equivalent of 21,944 meals – nearly a thousand more meals than its 21,000-meal objective. Three months and six food drives yielded 10,106 pounds of food and supplies, plus nearly $2,200 in cash donations, and online donations totaling more than $4,000. Representatives from Island Harvest Food Bank, small business owners, community volunteers and Girl Scouts who contributed to the initiative, the company announced the results of its Power to Feed Long Island initiative at the food bank’s Melville warehouse. “We are proud that our community came out to support each other and fight hunger through our Power to Feed Long Island food drives,” said Daniel Eichhorn, president and COO of PSEG Long Island, and Island Harvest Food Bank board member. “We set a lofty goal in July, and Long Islanders showed up in force with shopping carts and trunks full of food and supplies to meet the challenge. We crushed our goal because helping each other is something Long Islanders do, and it’s something our employees do. We’re glad we were able

to create the venue to make it happen.” “We are incredibly grateful to PSEG Long Island for their longstanding commitment to addressing the issue of hunger and food insecurity on Long Island,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO, Island Harvest Food Bank. “Thanks to their concern and generosity and the success of the Power to Feed Long Island initiative, countless Long Islanders struggling to feed their families will be able to rest easier knowing that they will have access to something as basic as food.”

Good Samaritan Hospital, a member of Catholic Health, and the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition kicked off Breast Health Awareness Month with their annual Pink Flags Celebration. The celebration was held at the Catholic Health Cancer Institute at Good Samaritan located at 111 Beach Drive in West Islip. As part of the month long awareness event, pink ﬂags have been placed throughout the hospital campus with tags available for purchase to honor a breast cancer survivor or in recognition of a loved one who has passed due to the disease. Donations are made to the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition to support those diagnosed with breast cancer in a variety of ways, including assistance with bills, house cleaning, food, wigs, prosthesis and other free services.

“Good Samaritan Hospital has been a partner of the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition since our inception,” said West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition President Margaret Campise. “When a need for breast health resources became apparent, the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition was developed along with the Breast Health Center at Good Samaritan. Both have worked hand-in-hand since 1993 to support those diagnosed with and under treatment for breast cancer. These services are not only for residents in West Islip, but instead is for those throughout the south shore of Suffolk County.” This year, another milestone in breast health was reached—the 10th Anniversary of Good Samaritan’s Women’s Imaging Center, located at 735 Montauk Highway in West Islip.

“Ten years ago, a community need to provide local breast imaging was fulfilled,” said Good Samaritan COO Col. (Ret.) John McMurray. “Good Samaritan’s Women’s Imaging Center continues to be a pioneer in breast health—the first in Suffolk with 3-D Digital Tomography, recipient of the highest accreditation scores from the National Accreditation Program of Breast Centers and named an American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.” Good Samaritan’s commitment to women and their health care needs continues with new advances and education through the hospital’s Breast Health Center and Women’s Imaging Center. Rules For A Safe Journey To The Classroom

Bus safety is a main priority of the Islip School District. In making sure that students make a secure journey from home to the classroom, all kindergarten students received mandated bus safety training at the start

of the school year. After each class loaded a bus, Suffolk Transportation Services drivers discussed the rules of riding and disembarking. Driver Marcia Thompson explained that bus safety begins at the bus stop

where students should remain alert and at a safe distance from the road. The students also learned that they must always wear a mask, should respect peers and should sit until it is their time to unload.

It is also a time when children out of school are not receiving daily free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch, which puts a heavier burden on their families. “Stop & Shop is proud to continue its committed support of the efforts of Island Harvest to address food insecurity across

Nassau and Suffolk counties,” said Stefanie Shuman, community relations manager, Stop & Shop. “Power to Feed Long Island allowed our customers to take part in food drives held at Stop & Shop stores and help their neighbors in need. It’s important that we all come together during these very difficult times,” she added. Along with the economic hardships caused by the pandemic, there is a

significant strain on the supplemental food supply chain. The collection drives continued through September, Hunger Action Month. More than a dozen PSEG Long Island employees participated in the food drives as Power to Feed Long Island ambassadors. They agree that safely getting back out into the community to help their neighbors was a rewarding experience.

HPV Vaccination Though there may not be a cancer vaccine, that does not mean that vaccinations cannot play a role in cancer prevention. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some cancers, including cervical cancer and cancers of the vulva and oropharynx, are caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV. The CDC notes that the HPV vaccine protects people against the types

of HPV that most often cause cancers. Adults can discuss the benefits of HPV vaccinations with their physicians, as the CDC notes that adults between the ages of 27 and 45 may have already been exposed to HPV, meaning the HPV vaccination will provide less benefit. Parents should know that the CDC recommends the HPV vaccination for preteens aged 11 to 12 years.
