The Perks of Being a Student Let me begin by stating that I have not been a college student for the better part of the last 13 years. That said, I still find myself enjoying some of the perks associated with being an alumna of one of our fine local institutions. It takes a bit of the sting out of being asked for ID when purchasing tickets to R-rated movies. Last year, I received a press invite for an intimate gathering of students at a Q&A with none other than Long Island’s own Billy Joel. Casual conversation, a few funny anecdotes, a verse from a song or two while seated at the piano - it was every fan’s dream to be in that audience of several hundred. The press, as it turned out, was asked to leave after the first 15 minutes of the event, to avoid the flash photography, videography and distraction often associated with a throng of media lined up in the back.
As cameramen and reporters were ushered out one by one, I received no more than a passing glance from the administrators in charge of “clearing” the area. Smartphone in hand, I tried to look as inconspicuous as possible until they had all gone. Once the coast was clear, I surveyed the remaining students to see them eagerly snapping photos and recording bits and pieces. Since no one had instructed that this was not allowed, I followed suit. The perks of being a “student,” indeed, if only for one day. This past week, I noticed a similar event upcoming, featuring former President Bill Clinton. Tickets ranged into the hundreds of dollars; but, in fine print, I noticed a line about complimentary tickets being available to students. Intrigued, I contacted the school to inquire if, perhaps, I might pass for a student once
more. I was told that, yes, this would be possible, and I could even be permitted in the press box as well. Once there, I determined that the so-called “press” was actually standing behind the row where I was to be seated, crammed in among the cameras on tripods, wiring and soundboards. About five minutes into the speaking engagement, I assessed the situation and gave up my special access in favor of a (somewhat) comfier seat down below. Once again, youth prevailed, granting me a better view of the action with none of the chaos. People have always said to me, you just wait - in a few years, you’ll be longing for the days when people thought you were so much younger… it’s a compliment, enjoy it while it lasts… Years later, I have to say, I’m beginning to see their point.

In its 21st year of serving the needs of the district’s students, East Islip’s For the Kids Foundation again stepped up to the plate with a generous donation for valuable academic, cultural and recreational programs. At the first board of education meeting of the year, held on September 14th, members of FTK – including President Pat Blair, Vice President Gina VanDenburg and Past President Nancy Goldfader – presented a $27,113.44 check to the board and
Superintendent John Dolan. “We are humbled by this donation and are so grateful for all of FTK’s hard work on behalf of East Islip’s children,” said Dolan. This latest FTK contribution included funding for the new 1,000 Book Club as well as to obtain STEM kits and build a memorial garden at the middle school. This donation, coupled with the other donations and programs sponsored in
the 2016-2017 school year, totaled almost $100,000, bringing FTK’s donations to the district’s students to more than $1,300,000. “We were thrilled to be able to make this donation,” said Blair. “We would not be able to do so without the tremendous support we receive from the families here in the East Islip School District as well as the district administration and staff. We are all so very proud to be For the Kids!”
Team Wins at State Islip High School’s girls varsity soccer team came home winners of the inaugural NYSSCOGS New York State High School Girls Soccer Hall of Fame Tournament, held in Herkimer, New York in September. The tournament hosted 22 of the state’s top girls soccer programs from Class AA through Class D. Islip’s Lady Bucs began the trip with a six-hour bus ride to upstate Herkimer, and then attended the first Hall of Fame induction ceremony, which included former standout state players, coaches and contributors such as Crystal Dunn, Ali Long, Emily Harner-Pickering, Sara Walen, Abby Wambach and Christie Welsch. One of the inductees for the first Hall of Fame class was alumna Sue WeberAlber, a high school and
collegiate All-American who graduated from Islip in 2003. Her career continued at Hofstra University, where she was named Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year three times, led Hofstra’s Pride team to CAA titles and NCAA Tournament berths in 2005 and 2007, was named CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player twice, and earned a spot on the Hermann Trophy watch list for two years in a row. After her graduation from Hofstra in 2008, the school officially retired her No. 20 jersey. WeberAlber was selected in the third round of the original Women’s Professional Soccer league by the Boston Breakers, and played for the team in 2009 under head coach Tony DiCicco. She is a

longtime team member and current captain of the Long Island Rough Riders of the USL W-League, and serves as head coach of the St. Anthony’s High School girls soccer team. At the Hall of Fame ceremony, Weber-Alber selected current Islip coach Mike Reilly, the Hall’s vice president, to present her award and introduce her. Following the induction ceremony, Islip’s Lady Bucs played the topranked Liverpool team, winning 1-0 in front of a large crowd at Herkimer Community College. The following day, Islip defeated another larger school, Baldwinsville, and won 4-2, earning the title of champions of their division. “It was a great experience for all of us, both on and off the pitch,” said Reilly.

Special Scholar Islip High School senior Morgiana McDevitt has been selected as a Long Island Scholar-Artist for the 2017-2018 school year. McDevitt was selected for her outstanding academic and theatrical achievements. The Scholar-Artist program, now in its 10th year, is a collaboration of the Long Island Arts Alliance, “Newsday” and the New York Community Bank Foundation, designed to recognize students judged to be “the best of the best” on Long Island in the disciplines of music, visual
arts, media arts, theater and dance. High school seniors who demonstrate outstanding artistic and academic achievement – including an unweighted grade point average of 90 or above – are nominated by their school districts, and 10 students each from Nassau and Suffolk receive the program’s highest honor. LIAA Scholar-Artists receive a scholarship check for $250 and a framed copy of their “Newsday” profile, presented at LIAA’s annual gala at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts.
McDevitt has already had a remarkable arts career. She appeared in the 2015 ABC feature film “Fan Girl” with Kiernan Shipka and Meg Ryan; performed as the lead in Islip High School’s production of “Pippin” as well as roles “The Wiz,” “Into the Woods,” “Cinderella,” “The Sound of Music,” “Big Fish” and “Mary Poppins”; performed at the Noel S. Ruiz Theatre at CM Performing Arts Center in Oakdale in productions of “Bring It on Bridget” and “The Spelling Bee”; and performed at the BroadHollow Theatre
Company’s Bayway Arts Center in East Islip. In July 2017, she was a soloist for the Islip Arts Council’s concert at Heckscher State Park, performing the national anthem with the Long Island Philharmonic. As an active member of Islip’s school community, she has served as junior class vice president, Science Olympiad vice president, and president of the Theatre Arts Club and swing jazz ensemble.
