Farewell To A Legend By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I first became a Yankees fan back in the fall of 1995, as the team made its first run at the postseason since 1981, with the legendary Don Mattingly at its helm. For the first time in my lifetime, I understood the magnitude of this storied organization. And then, just like that, the run was over. Mattingly walked off into the sunset, having never made it to a World Series. The end of an era. But there, waiting in the wings, was a rookie shortstop, destined to pick up the torch and run with it. And run he did, for the next 20 seasons, leading the Yankees to five World Championships

and racking up countless milestones along the way. Derek Jeter exemplified what it meant to be a true Yankee in an era when there were very few, if any, athletes doing things the “right” way, never mind in a city as unforgiving as New York. Much has been said, and written, over these last several weeks – really, throughout the past year, since Jeter announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2014 season – analyzing the legacy of the player, the upbringing of the man, his place in Yankees, and baseball, lore. To that, I can only add the following: while he may never have been the “best” in any one statistical category, as

relentlessly pointed out by rival fans and the national media, he was undeniably in a class by himself in the only categories that counted – dignity, sportsmanship, integrity… and, oh yeah, he had quite the knack for coming through in the clutch, when the stakes were the highest, the pressure the greatest. Not bad for an “overrated” player, right? Yankees fan or not, these last several weeks have been quite the emotional rollercoaster. An historic era in Yankees history has come to a close, the only one my generation has had the privilege to witness. And what a privilege it was.

On Sunday, October 26th, at 9:30 a.m. thousands of Long Islanders will take “steps” toward eradicating breast cancer during the 21st annual Walk for Beauty in a Beautiful Place. various spots along the participants’ courses to create a unique experience for runners, walkers, and spectators alike. The Ward Melville Art Honor Society is painting the signage directing participants to parking for the event. Anthony Muscarella, a Ward Melville High School senior, art student, and graphic wiz created the 10K t-shirt design as well as the official COLOR Splash logo. Many high school sports teams, including the women’s tennis team and the women’s volleyball team will be participating in the Walk. The Yearbook staff, led by editor Amanda Spacarelli, will be coordinating the COLOR Splash finish-line photo booth, and the music department is involved in helping to organize the performances along the route. Also new this year, Kyra Durko has launched the Walk For Beauty Ambassadors program to further enrich the new life that Walk for Beauty has developed this year. This program creates a network of students from other regional high schools including Port Jefferson, Smithtown, Shoreham Wading River, Half Hollow Hills, Walt Whitman, Harborfields, Centereach, Our Savior, Comsewogue, and more, that are helping grow the regional presence at this event. Ambassadors work to get their schools and communities involved in the Walk for Beauty, Color Splash, and 10K run through various active promotional tactics, focusing on clubs and athletic teams. C o m m u n i t y participation will be greater than ever with support from local businesses, the Stony Brook and St. James Fire Departments, Suffolk County Police

and CERT Volunteers, the Brookhaven (ARES) Amateur Radio Emergency Service, Three Village Kiwanis Club, local Girl Scouts, local Boy Scouts, Stony Brook University commuter student organization, cheer squad, dance team, and numerous sports teams from Murphy Junior High School and the community. In addition to hosting musical acts and water stations, residents along the route, as well as all residents in Stony Brook and Setauket, are being encouraged to “turn the town pink” by purchasing and displaying pink ribbons on their properties to show support for the cause. Official Walk for Beauty pink bows can be purchased from the Ward Melville Heritage Organization for $5. Advanced registration is now open for the COLOR Splash, at $30 for pre-registration before October 15th, and $35 after that and day-of. Registration is also open for the Walk for Beauty and the Hercules on the Harbor 10K at $25 and $35, respectively. The first 1,000 walkers to signup will receive a commemorative 2014 Walk for Beauty t-shirt and the first 250 10K runners are guaranteed a Hercules on the Harbor long-sleeve t-shirt (sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union). School is hard, And sometimes it leaves you scarred. There’s always so much pressure, And the wounds just get fresher.

On pictures you want more likes, But what happened to fun and bikes? But we do these things to escape from stress And for a little escape from the mess.

Books and tests To a kid are just pests. Papers and projects Are as boring as the subjects.

But what does tomorrow bring? Another day being played by a string. You go back to work And remember everyone’s a jerk.

We all question why we go, But we really don’t know. We go because we have to, And sometimes we have to do what we have to do.

You go back to school, Where everyone thinks they’re so cool. And you’re lost in the building With teens who act like children.

The key is to find moments to live for, To not live life like it’s a chore. Make a friend, Find somewhere you blend.

If I could stress this more, Maybe you wouldn’t feel so sore. Find a friend, They could help you mend.

Life is harder on your own, Especially when you’ve yet to be grown. But we blame the teachers And the coaches who put us on the bleachers.

Now in its 21st year, Island Harvest Food Bank’s annual Taste of the Harvest Celebration remains the organization’s premier fundraiser to help provide critical food support to more than 300,000 Long Islanders struggling with hunger every day. This year’s gala will be held on Tuesday, October 21st, at 6 p.m. at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York, and will recognize three outstanding individuals for their commitment to helping end hunger and reducing food waste on Long Island. Not your typical fundraising dinner, the Taste of the Harvest Celebration brings together Long Island’s leading restaurants, caterers, country clubs and other fine food establishments to offer guests a sumptuous sampling of gourmet food and desserts. Other highlights of the evening include a silent auction offering a variety of lavish prizes to suit everyone’s taste. The Taste of the Harvest Celebration will also be the occasion to honor three exceptional Long Islanders for their ongoing support of Island Harvest and its mission. A champion on and off the field, John Schmitt played center for the NY Jets and was part of their thrilling Super Bowl III victory. Now the former center and Hofstra University alumnus vigorously champions hunger-relief efforts and the good work of Island Harvest. Joe Gergela, the executive director of the Long Island Farm Bureau, helped plant the seeds of a program in which Long Island farmers donate excess crops to Island Harvest. Four students from Islip High School have been selected to statelevel honors in the area of music. The student-musicians were selected for AllState based upon their performance at last year’s New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Solo Festival. The students will prepare for the festival with Choral Director Dr. Rich Harris, Jr. and Band Director Steve Campanella. The New York AllState bands, choruses,

orchestras and jazz ensembles are honors groups comprised of the top students from school music departments across the state. Following a club dinner at Dave & Buster’s in Islandia this past May, the 16 patriotic students in East Islip Middle School’s busy Builders Club and teacher Rena Costello traveled to Long Island MacArthur Airport, where they displayed handmade signs to greet World War II veterans returning from an Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C. Honor Flight, a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring America’s veterans, provides free plane trips and daylong tours to the National World War II Memorial and other sites in the capitol. Chief Warrant Officer Francis Romanitch, a member of the U.S. Marine

Corps based on Long Island, visited the middle school in June to thank the Builders Club for its service to the veterans as well as the club’s ongoing efforts on behalf of deployed military members. Romanitch also accompanied Costello, East Islip Superintendent Linda Rozzi and Builders Club officer Sofia Ferrezza to the office of Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi, a longtime supporter of the club and East Islip’s program of donations for overseas troops. “Under the leadership of Superintendent Rozzi and Rena Costello, the Builders Club provides a unique conduit between East Islip Middle School students and those brave men and

Movement Speaks STUDIO OF DANCE

Movement Speaks Studio of Dance recently opened its doors in Babylon Village, at 225 Deer Park Avenue. After having danced for 27 years and taught for nearly 15 of those years, partners Aileen Smisek and Megan Connell decided to take the leap and open a dance studio of their own. Movement Speaks offers classes for children from ages 18 months through adult levels. These include: Mommy & Me, Pre-School, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Contemporary/Modern, along with a competition team training class. They also feature an award-winning competitive team, open to all serious dancers. Aileen and Megan’s choreography has been honored through the years with numerous prestigious awards at dance

competitions, both on the Regional and National level. Many of their students have gone on to dance in college and beyond. Aileen and Megan plan to involve the studio in upcoming community events such as the Babylon Fall Festival and the Old-Fashioned Night of Shopping. Also in the works for the coming year are a Zumbathon, a Mommy & Daughter Tea Party and, during the holiday season, a “12 Days Of Christmas” event where parents can drop their children off at the studio for a dance class and a special project while they shop locally in the Village. Movement Speaks looks forward to being an active member of the Babylon Chamber of Commerce, as well as the local community. The studio also hopes to fundraise for several causes close to their hearts. Best of luck in the neighborhood!

Islip High School Chairperson for Science Matthew Christiansen has been selected by the New York Section of the American Chemical Society as the 2014 recipient of the Nichols Foundation High School Chemistry Teacher Award. The New York Section, through the generosity of the Nichols Foundation, Inc., will present a $1,000 award and an ACS plaque to Mr. Christiansen for his outstanding contribution

motivation in the sciences. “It’s very humbling to be recognized,” Christiansen said. “I’ve been completely inspired by my students and my colleagues at Islip. Without them, this award would not have been possible. East Islip High School alumna Dominique Salice, a 2003 graduate, was recently promoted to a prominent position as senior campaigns and elections specialist at the National Educational Association. Based out of the NEA’s Washington, D.C. headquarters, Salice’s new job entails applying political campaign

expertise to support the organization’s strategic objective of promoting great public schools for every student. “I will be working with members across the nation to identify opportunities for action around what most effects educators and their students,” said Salice. “I hope to raise the voices of educators, to give them leadership over what goes on in the classroom and the opportunity to humanize education, to consider the whole child without the fear of standardized test results and to have access to professional development to do so. I believe with all my heart

that without a strong public education system, we will not see progress in our country – social, economic or otherwise.” Following her graduation from East Islip, Salice attended SUNY Purchase where she earned a degree in political science. She worked as a regional field director for the Human Rights Campaign’s work for marriage equality in New York before taking a state director position at the Service Employees International Union Wisconsin State Council.

In his seventh year as a teacher at Islip High School, he has taught chemistry, advanced placement chemistry, forensics, AP environmental science, along with biochemistry and physiology, and he’s served as the head coach of the Science Olympiad team. Currently, Christiansen is enrolled in the Learning and Teaching doctorate program with a concentration in Science Education at Hofstra University, where he is investigating a novel scale to measure student

life, the average college student is pretty booked. There is rarely enough time to do much else. However, if you can manage your time right, college proves to be a whole lot of fun. It’s a new experience, and there is nobody there to tell you what to do or when to go to bed. As a college student, you are truly on your own. Each kid needs to make decisions for him or herself regarding work hours and sleeping time. I was once told

in college, it is of the utmost importance to get the work done before you go out and have fun. After all, college is about learning, and your parents aren’t paying tons of money for you to go to class hungover! College is supposed to be a time of change for freshmen. There is a learning curve, and oftentimes freshman get distracted by all of the fun opportunities that present themselves. In the two months I’ve been at Villanova, I’ve

the only effective way to approach college. I can’t wait until fall break, so I can see my family again. I miss my bed, and all of the relaxing inﬂuences that I now associate with home. College is awesome and all, but I’m ready for a vacation! The commitment to clubs, athletics and academics really fills your schedule. If you want to become an involved part of the Villanova community, you have to apply yourself and manage your time!

Hospital Project Stony Brook University showcased the construction progress of its new Stony Brook Children’s Hospital facility during a ceremony yesterday where President Samuel L. Stanley Jr.,

M.D., was joined by public officials, generous donors, young patients and their families, and hundreds of administrators, physicians and staff. The new facility, which will have 100 beds and occupy two stories of

a new 10-story Hospital Pavilion, is slated to open in 2016. President Stanley expressed gratitude to Sen. Kenneth P. LaValle and Sen. John Flanagan for securing more than

$50 million for an expansion project that will help construct the medical and research translation (MART) building and the new Hospital Pavilion. The combined $425M project is the largest capital

More than 8,500 infants, children and young adults are admitted each year to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, which in its existing facility operates 106 pediatric beds and has more than 200 full-time and voluntary pediatric physicians and surgeons in 33 different specialties. “The new Children’s Hospital will reﬂect the Children’s Hospital difference – familycentered, age-appropriate care from highly trained specialists,” said Margaret McGovern, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Chair, Department of Pediatrics, Stony Brook University School of Medicine and Physician-In-Chief, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “It’s a comprehensive approach that addresses the unique physical, emotional and developmental needs of children, from infancy through young adulthood … from the Ronald McDonald Family Room, to Wi-Fi enabled classrooms to help kids keep up with their schoolwork, to LED wall lights that allow children to customize the look of their rooms,” she added. The 225,000 squarefoot Hospital Pavilion and the 240,000 squarefoot MART Building are being constructed adjacent to Stony Brook University Hospital on the Stony Brook Medicine campus. A $50 million commitment from Jim and Marilyn Simons enabled Stony Brook University to qualify for a $35 million NYSUNY 2020 Challenge Grant, making construction of the MART possible. The Hospital Pavilion and the MART will bring some 4,200 project-related and specialized research jobs to the region.
