2022 Fall Freshwater Fishing & Children’s Festival

At Hempstead Lake State Park

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) I FISH NY Program and Freshwater Fisheries Unit are pleased to announce the Fall Freshwater Fishing & Children’s Festival will be held at Hempstead Lake State Park, on Saturday, October 15, from 10:00AM – 4:00PM

The fishing license requirement for all anglers over the age of 16 is suspended for this festival and admission and parking are free. Festival activities include fishing instruction, casting practice, loaner rods, free bait, and fish cleaning services to all participants. A “Casting for Pumpkins” event for children will be provided

by the Seaford Knights of Columbus. Activities are provided by I FISH NY and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. Corporate sponsors include Renewal by Andersen of Long Island, New York Life and Veolia.

Prior to the festival, South and McDonald Ponds will be stocked with hundreds of brook and rainbow trout. The high concentration of stocked trout should provide a great opportunity to introduce your family to the wonderful sport of freshwater fishing. In addition to fishing opportunities, there will be a wildlife show, magic performance, and much more.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

October is a month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways.

October 14 is World Sight Day, which focuses on public awareness of blindness and vision impairment as major international public health issues to influence funding for national blindness prevention and to educate about blindness prevention.

October 15 is White Cane Day, established in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson to raise awareness of people who carry a white cane, to help motorists identify and yield to people using one and to create legal penalties for not doing so.

Additionally, the entire month of October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities, past and present, and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices.

Taken together, a common goal of these intersecting events is to raise the level of appreciation for people who do not have full use of their sight, yet overcome daily challenges to live and be treated equally alongside their sighted brothers and sisters.

Helen Keller Services (HKS) is a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation. Since 1893, they have been committed to improving the lives of individuals who are blind, have low vision or combined hearing and vision loss. Their mission is to enable individuals who are blind, DeafBlind, have vision loss, or hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in the communities of their choice.

Historically high fuel prices will undoubtedly prove to be one of the defining stories of 2022. As the average price for a gallon of gas reached heights drivers might never have imagined as recently as February 2022, some might

have wondered just how much that same gallon might have cost roughly 100 years ago. According to the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, the average price for a gallon of gas in 1929 was 21 cents. Inflation

2022 Annual Jake K Foundation Zombie Run!

The Jake K Foundation (JKF) is pleased to announce our 2022 annual “Zombie Run” to be held on Saturday, October 8th at Belmont Lake State Park in West Babylon. Join us for the Zombie Run 5k, a run or walk to benefit the Jake Koenigsdorf Foundation (the JKF)“Reducing the barriers to recovery.”  Run with us in person on race day, or join us from anywhere in the world by using our virtual option.

The Mission of JKF is to bridge the gap for those affected and effected by Substance Use Disorder (Addiction) who are ready and willing to seek a solution. We are closing the gaps in the recovery road through education, connection,

while providing resources to those without access to resources. Funds donated to JKF are used to support entry funding and transportation to recovery facilities that use a peer community model that teaches a solution that have a program duration of four months or longer.

People in active drug and alcohol addiction will do damage to their families, end up in an institution, in jail, die, or they work to build recovery. We create opportunities for people to take their lives back.

Participants will receive a long sleeve race t-shirt with our zombie race logo. Awards will go to the top overall male and female runners, plus the top winners in age groups.

Suffolk Federal Credit Union Awards College Scholarships To Local Students

- Suffolk Federal Credit Union presented college scholarships totaling $37,500 to nine local students attending Suffolk County Community College this fall. Suffolk Federal Credit Union presented college scholarships totaling $37,500 to nine local students attending Suffolk County Community College this fall. The award ceremony was held on Aug. 31, 2022, at the Suffolk Federal Credit Union Arena in Brentwood.

“Since partnering with the college three years ago, we are proud to have sponsored 23 scholarships totaling $93k,” said Michele Dean, CEO & President, Suffolk Federal Credit Union. “By easing the financial burden of college costs, we help families in our communities as well as students—freeing up resources for other important goals.”

This year, Skyla Fabbricante of East Northport received a $6,275 scholarship from the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship, which was matched by Suffolk Federal for a total of $12,550. Daniel Paesano (Sound Beach) was awarded $6,275 by

Suffolk Federal in honor of the Michael E. Reilly Foundation Memorial Scholarship.

Suffolk Federal Credit Union Achievement Scholarships ranging from $2,150-$6,275 were awarded to Christina Boles (Brentwood), Kristin Squire (Islip), Rachel Lee (Middle Island), Alyssia Furchert (Blue Point), Leslie Bardales Vera (Selden), Ian Fischer (Stony Brook) and Jonathan Mata (Riverhead).

The scholarships are a result of an ongoing partnership between Suffolk Federal and the Suffolk Community College Foundation to help people throughout our communities achieve their dreams. Award recipients were selected based on their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, community involvement and essays.

Dr. Edward Bonahue, President of Suffolk County Community College, commented, “This scholarship program

reflects Suffolk Federal Credit Union’s deep commitment to helping young people and families throughout Long Island. The recipients clearly have demonstrated the drive and discipline to succeed.”
