Students were tasked with interviewing people who were older than 14 on September 11th, 2001, and then writing brief narratives on the interviewees’ memories and points of view. RUNNER SUPPORT - Islip Town officials were recently joined by over two hundred runners at the annual Miles of Hope 5K. The race, hosted by the Town of Islip in conjunction with the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition, raises funds to assist women who are suffering from the effects of breast cancer, and to fund research efforts that lead to better treatment methods for breast cancer and other women’s cancers.

Welcome to October, the month when thoughts turn from late summer sunshine and seaside walks to apples and pumpkins and all things autumn. ‘Tis the season before THE season of holiday madness, that lull when – aside from Halloween – one can simply enjoy the crisp air while taking a hay ride with friends, navigating a corn maze or picking up some local produce at the neighborhood farm stand. Personally, I am a girl of summer, basking in

the glow of sunsets and days spent at the beach, of aimless wandering along our many shores in search of hidden oases of beauty. But autumn has its own special unique charm as well. There is nothing quite like feeling the crunch of freshly fallen leaves under your boots, of cuddling up with a good book and some hot apple cider donuts. This is the time of respite, that period of transition from long golden days to chilly evenings, the calm before the storm of feasting with family, of decking the halls

and shopping ‘til your heart’s content, for loved ones and yourself. Come November, its full-steam ahead, and the novelty of the season tends to wear off a bit amidst the chaos. Now is the time to treasure. So take October, enjoy. Take in the foliage, absorb your surroundings, snap a few photos for your autumn album, catch up with old friends over coffee – do whatever it is to soak in the season while it’s here. Because, before we know it, we’ll be on to the next one.

East Islip High School freshmen and sophomores in English and history teacher Greg Kguloian’s classes recently marked the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks with a special project. Students were tasked with interviewing people who were older than 14 on September 11th, 2001, and then writing brief narratives on the interviewees’ memories and points of view. “These students were either not born yet or just born when these real-life events took place,” said Kguloian. “The project gave them a chance to open a dialog about this turning point in American history. It was designed to make

the learning experience more relevant to them than if it was treated like just another chapter in modern American history. Knowledge is power, and it is my job to give my students the tools and opportunity to discover and verify veracity and to learn from and about the truth. I ultimately want them to communicate with others and then be able to adequately and accurately represent the facts.” The students worked in groups to brainstorm ideas about what and how to research and report about people’s real recollections about that tragic day, before conducting the interviews as well as formal research to further

their understanding of 9/11, citing verifiable factual information about the events at the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. “Some of these interviews that my students did were extremely personal and poignant,” said Kguloian after reviewing their efforts. He accompanied the project with a screening of home video footage he made with his family on 9/11. “By showing them my home movies from that time, I hope I was able to let them see that their teacher is a real person, with a life and a family outside of school, and let them understand that I will be open and honest with them,” he said.

AP Scholar Status Sixteen sterling seniors at Islip High School recently received award certificates from the College Board, recognizing them as AP Scholars for 2016. AP courses are graded on a scale of 1 to 5, with a score of 3 or above qualifying high school students for college course credit, and the College Board’s Advanced Placement Program presents several levels of AP Scholar Awards each year, honoring students who demonstrate outstanding college-level

achievement through AP courses and exams. Nine Islip students from the Class of 2017 – Zoe Camhi, Hunter Giordano, Brendan Mercado, Patrick Mugan, James O’Halloran, Kenneth Ortega, Mimita Rahman, Kyle Sapia and Robert Vonderahe – were named AP Scholars with Honor. They earned this distinction by receiving an average score of at least 3.25 on all of their AP exams and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of those exams. Seven seniors were

90th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently presented Islip resident Mildred “Mickey” Hrubes with an award recognizing her career and volunteer work in the Islip community. being kind and respectful to others. We celebrated it by decorating our own pinwheels, childhood symbols that reminds us of a time when things were simple, joyful and peaceful, and by talking about being kind, caring and respectful to others in our school and our community.”

Cultivating Kindness Students at East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School learned how to change the world by cultivating kindness, thanks to an inspirational assembly by author and performer Rich Specht of ReesSpecht Life. Specht’s book, “A Little Rees Specht Cultivates Kindness,” was inspired by the outpouring of help his family received after losing his young son Rees, and the presentation engaged the youngsters by comparing spreading kindness to

The program was funded by East Islip’s For the Kids Foundation, which purchased an autographed copy of the book for each East Islip elementary school student. “It was inspirational to see how Rich Specht made powerful connections to the students of Connetquot, through his words and songs, and the book he wrote,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “When he asked the children how they could

Danielle Flaumenhaft was recently announced as the new principal of East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School, replacing Dr. Deborah Smith, who shifted over to the district’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School. Flaumenhaft had previously served as an assistant principal at

Setauket Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District in Setauket since July 2014. Before that, she worked as an assistant principal at New Lane Elementary School in the Middle Country School District in Selden from 2013-2014, and an acting assistant principal and literacy coach at South County Central School District in Bellport from 2005-2013. She taught as an adjunct professor at Dowling College in Oakdale from 2003-2005, and as a fifthgrade teacher at Lawrence School District from 19962003 and Boston Public Schools from 1995-1996. A Sayville resident, Flaumenhaft earned her bachelor’s degree in

Outreach Support On Saturday, October 8th at Jones Beach, Outreach and the John Brower, Jr. Foundation will host the 2nd annual 5K Walk to raise funds and awareness about substance and alcohol abuse in New York, bringing the community together while walking for a cause. The event honors the memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an opiate overdose at age 25. Proceeds from the walk will support Outreach, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction. The Brower family formed the John Brower, Jr. Foundation to heighten awareness about substance abuse and to help raise funds to end the drug epidemic that has had an adverse effect on Long Island. After being introduced to Outreach shortly after their son’s passing, the Browers

were impressed by the organization’s dedication to help those struggling with addiction. They decided to target all the group’s fundraising for the agency. To date, the Brower family has donated more than $37,000 to Outreach. “The Brower family is one of too many Long Island families who have experienced the heartbreak of opiate addiction,” said Kathleen Riddle, president of Outreach. “We join the Browers in their mission to do all we can to raise awareness for teens and young adults so additional families do not have to lose a loved one to substance abuse. The Brower family has been tremendously generous and devoted to the cause. Upon solving each clue, participants should visit that location and have their special treasure map stamped by one of our zookeepers or Long Island Game Farm staff. Once a participant earns five stamps, they should journey along to the place where X marks the spot in order to claim their prize as well as cookie and juice treats. Though guests are encouraged to wear outfits inspired by the event (be it a princessstyle ball gown, a princestyle suit or your favorite pirate attire), costumes are not required to participate. Additionally, while general admission is required to enter the park, there is no additional cost to join the event. “The Pirates and Princesses Treasure Hunt was the perfect ending to our season last year,” says Melinda Novak, Vice President/ Co-Owner, Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo. “Though we will continue to be open for a few more days postevent, we are looking forward to hosting all buccaneers and having them celebrate the end of 2016 with us! It’s a great way for families to spend an afternoon.” The Long Island Game Farm features interactive animal experiences, where guests can get upclose and personal with their favorite animals. New to the Game Farm this year was the Giraffe Encounter, where guests hand-fed the park’s resident giraffe, Clifford, and learned fun facts from the staff. In addition to Clifford, guests once again had the chance to hand-feed the LIGF’s camels, which this year feature a new addition

Services provided include educating cancer patients, caregivers and the medical community on the benefits of incorporating exercise into the treatment regimen and its effect on reducing the risk of certain cancers and re-occurrences, along with improving bodily functional activities. Programs are conducted by certified cancer

exercise specialists in a group setting and held at 11 accessible locations throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. Over the past seven years, SFL has reached more than 1,700 patients and survivors. World Gym Wantagh hosts classes twice a week, and they are forever grateful for the beautiful room and welcoming staff. Many survivors are initially intimidated to go back into the gym environment. Their intent is to empower them to embrace the “new normal” and feel confident enough to go back to their previous activities. Learning of the astronomical copays of a cancer diagnosis and how it can make it financially difficult for many to work with a personal trainer, Strength for Life has tried to eliminate all the barriers – travel, equipment, cost and qualified cancer exercise specialists. Strength for Life would like to thank Barbara Larrea and the World Gym Wantagh for organizing “Cycle for Strength,” held September 24th at Mulcahy’s, the third epic two-hour event, with participants invited to ride in honor of a cancer warrior. Enormous effort was put forth by Ms. Larrea to organize this event and by the Team and Family of World Gym Wantagh. Over $50,000 was raised by this generous community, and the sponsors of the event. In the past three years, the Wantagh World Gym has held this event and chose Strength for Life as a beneficiary with the total raised over $110,000. Strength for Life relies on our fundraising events to provide these services and World Gym Wantagh relieved a heavy burden during these years.
