Everyone loves a good, old-fashioned garage sale. The people of the Islip United Methodist Church, 350 Main Street, Islip especially, love garage sales! For the past ten years, the members of the Methodist Church have held a huge, church-wide garage sale to raise money for their various mission projects. This year, their Annual Fall Yard Sale will be held on October 5, 2019, from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the Islip United Methodist Church, 350 Main Street, Islip. There will be lots of items available. PSEG Long Island employees once again showed school spirit as they helped United Way of Long Island distribute nearly 200,000 critical school supply items for 8,000 students to help them start the school year off right. PSEG Long Island employees frequently volunteer for United Way campaigns, including this “Stuff-A-Bus” event. The volunteers met at United Way headquarters in Deer Park, where they packed up their bus with boxes of pencils, crayons, notebooks, rulers, backpacks and other supplies that were collected throughout the summer. The group then jumped on the bus and rode to Loretta Park and Laurel Park Elementary Schools in Brentwood to hand out the boxes to students.

Stuff-A-Bus is a community service activity that PSEG Long Island employees have supported since its inception. “Giving back to our communities is a core commitment at PSEG Long Island and our employees continuously step up to do their part,” said Daniel Eichhorn, PSEG Long Island’s president and COO “We’re very proud that our employees rally around the United Way’s efforts to ensure local school kids start their school year with the tools they need to succeed.” “Stuff-A-Bus is an incredibly important program that touches the lives of 8,000 children each year, and directly impacts their success in the classroom. Special 911 Anniversary Speaker Keep Islip Clean recently hosted Martin Bellew to speak about his experiences with search, investigation and cleanup of Ground Zero from the immediate aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks to removal of all material ten months later. Mr. Bellew, who is currently the Commissioner for Islip’s Department of

Environmental Control, was the Director of the NYC Sanitation Department’s Bureau of Waste Disposal Engineering at the time of the attacks. The immense job of removing all debris to the Fish Kills Landfill was made more difficult by the search for clues and victims’ remains. The task involved coordination with Federal, State and local officials, including the

FBI. His lecture included previously unpublished photos from this work. “It was clear to me after the presentation that Commissioner Bellew’s knowledge and leadership is the reason an impossible task was brought to a successful conclusion,” said Nancy Cochran, Executive Director of Keep Islip Clean.

The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetry of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish It’s hard to believe that October is already here and Halloween is quickly approaching! After The Cemetery of Lost Souls, a grassroots organization ran by a family in Massapequa Park, reached out to me and told me their story, I decided to choose them for the Charity of the Month. Sometimes it’s easy to judge a book by it’s cover. For example, when you see the frightening Haunted House that they create each year, you may not be thinking that there is a deep meaning behind why they do it. Once I discovered this, along with the driving force which pushes them to bring this event back year after year, I knew I had to feature them! In 2008 Christopher and Joann (husband and wife) of Massapequa Park started decorating their yard for Halloween with their children. In 2009 they built their first prop, added some smoke, lights and store bought decorations. That same year they became aware of H.O.L.I., an organization on Long Island that compiles a list of the best decorated home “Haunts”. It became their family’s goal to make it onto that list and in 2011 they achieved that goal. In 2012, their children had the idea of using their “special talents” to help others. Their oldest son thought of making their displays more interactive by adding actors to haunt their elaborate sets and setting up a donation box that people could donate to different charities. Their charity event was officially born and every year since it has grown bigger. Each year this organization gears up to create an elaborate Haunted House on their property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Additionally and more importantly, each year they choose a charity to raise funds for. The best part is, they don’t keep a penny for themselves. Every bit of money raised through this event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to charity. They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put the haunt on are volunteers and most of

the actors are local students. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Long Island Cares. In 2017, Massapequa Park Mayor, Jeff Provato, even showed up to give support and was given the “Key To The Haunt”! This year they are donating to Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicated with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! Stop by on October 12, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM to see what it is all about! Additionally, they are still actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing, Scare Team Members, Security and on their Bake Team. Pinwheels For Peace Classes at Islip’s Wing Elementary School participated in the global peace initiative Pinwheels for Peace project on Sept. 20. The annual event, coinciding with the International Day of Peace, remind students about the importance of peace in our world. Students created their own pinwheels as a symbol of something simple and joyful, in the hopes that spinning pinwheels will extend thoughts and feelings about peace throughout the community. “All of us at Wing are always very proud and excited to participate in this project, one that has existed at our school since 2005,” said Principal Michael Giacchetto. “It was a great day at Wing that focused on making PINWHEELS FOR PEACE - Classes at Islip’s Wing Elementary School participated in the global peace initiative Pinwheels for Peace project. our world a better place to Photo courtesy of Islip School District live.”

Honor Society kicks off the year East Islip High School’s National Foreign Language Honor Society recently held its first general meeting of the school year, with 130 out of 193 club members in attendance. This marks the largest ever group of student members for East Islip’s NFLHS.

During the meeting, students and coadvisers Giuseppe Costa and Betty Muller discussed additions to Foreign Language Week schedule as well as scholarship fundraiser ideas including an open mic night where teachers and students could perform together

and share their talents to build community. “We are very excited to be able to have such a large group this year and look forward to an amazing year with all of the students at East Islip High School,” said Muller.
