The community of St. John the Baptist is proud to announce that it will be hosting its First Annual Research Symposium on Monday, October 6th from 6 to 8 p.m. This symposium will feature the work and reflections of SJB students who are members of our GENESIS science research program. Students will present abstracts of their work and the symposium will move into breakout sessions in which each student will make a more detailed posterbased description of their work and take questions from participants. The evening will conclude with a summary review of research posters and an informal discussion. The event is designed to spark an interest in seventh and eighth grade students who love science and may be interested in conducting their own research. “Under the leadership of Superintendent Rozzi and Rena Costello, the Builders Club provides a unique conduit between East Islip Middle School students and those brave men and women serving overseas in our armed forces, particularly the Marines,” said Cilmi. “Not only are needed supplies distributed to our troops who always appreciate the support, but our students gain a better understanding of the sacrifices our soldiers make on their behalf.” Culminating the project, Builders Club members toured the American Airpower Museum in Farmingdale in July, where they met with the WWII veterans who had made the trip in May, presenting each veteran with a specially designed photo book of their Honor Flight trip.

Honor Flight, a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring America’s veterans, provides free plane trips and daylong tours to the National World War II Memorial and other sites in the capitol. Chief Warrant Officer Francis Romanitch, a member of the U.S. Marine Corps based on Long Island, visited the middle school in June to thank the Builders Club for its service to the veterans as well as the club’s ongoing efforts on behalf of deployed military members. Romanitch also accompanied Costello, East Islip Superintendent Linda Rozzi and Builders Club officer Alexa Sanchez to the office of Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi, a longtime supporter of the club and East Islip’s program of donations for overseas troops.

In conjunction with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, the Town of Islip announces that its Draft Material Removal Work Plan for Roberto Clemente Park has been made available on a special link on its website at www.townofislip-ny.gov. Additional information about additional public participation is
forthcoming. “As promised, we have submitted our work plan to the proper regulatory agency and have continued our regular communication with the public and interested agencies throughout this process. Our goal for the recovery process is to begin cleanup of illegally placed materials as soon as New York State DEC grants

The Islip Town Board today voted to formalize its Language Access Policy in an effort to accommodate all Islip Town residents, regardless of the language they speak. The formal policy calls for the Division of Constituent Services to ensure that interpreter services can be available to accommodate constituents who require language interpretation assistance.Many of these practices have long been in place in the Town, but will be further executed and promoted to the public via the Town’s official website, social media sites, and e-alert services. “It is of great importance that we are able to communicate to all our residents and visitors to Islip. These language services will offer us the opportunity to convey vital information to all,” said Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci. For those in need of interpreter services who wish to speak at a public meeting, it is requested that the resident contact Constituent Services at least one week prior to the meeting, so that arrangements can be made to have an interpreter of the appropriate language present. Band Of Brothers The Villanova Rugby team is an organization that has gone through many twists and turns in its history. It was disbanded for a few years, only to come back stronger than ever. This year, the Villanova Rugby Football Club is on the road to a playoff finish. In our first three games, we played some of the best teams in the country. Notre Dame College and Towson are the two favorites to win it all this year. We played both of these teams, and although we lost, gave them a run for their money. This weekend, we are set to take on
Lock Haven. Under the guidance of four new coaches, the Rugby Team is finally gaining respect on campus. We practice five days a week in the hopes that we can win matches. It’s a violent sport, and many of our guys have gotten injured. There are no pads in rugby, so players face a huge risk. During a game, there are fifteen large men on the other team who want to hurt you. If you have the ball, you need to move. There is no stoppage in play. If the ball carrier goes down, a ruck is formed, and the teams fight for the ball. As the Tighthead Prop,
I’m expected to get in on all of the rucks. I do this willingly, because my teammate is often at the bottom of that pile. I look out for them, and they look out for me. Its a bond that we’ve developed on the Rugby Team. The other players have been like an extended family to me. I’m really liking this team, and I hope that I can play on it for the next four years. Villanova has really proven to be a good fit for me. I like that sense of brotherhood, and the Rugby Team is full of fun people.

What always gets me is the directory, which instructs you to select your issue and what department you would like to speak with; yet, once you actually reach a human after “longer than normal wait times,” they never seem to know what your call is in reference to. And after repeated calls, and numerous notations on the account in question, it would stand to reason that you shouldn’t have to re-explain the entire problem from the beginning. And yet…
I try to be patient through it all, telling myself it’s not their fault that they work for a completely inefficient organization. They simply have a job to do, as we all do. Flipping out never sped the process along. At the end of one of these service calls, which stretched over approximately three hours (yes, you read that correctly), the woman on the other end actually took the time out to thank me, saying my patience showed a lot about my character. Well, if dealing with customer service builds character, I think I’ve reached my quota for quite a while!

Two East Islip High School students – current senior Angela Verlezza and Class of 2014 graduate Jennifer Coffin – were both selected as finalists in Photographer’s Forum Magazine’s 35th Annual College & High School Photography Contest, sponsored by Nikon. The winning photos will be
published in the May 2015 issue of the magazine and entered into Nikon’s Emerging Photographers Hall of Fame. “I was very impressed that these two talented photography students were finalists in this amateur photography contest,” said their art teacher, Heather Toomey.
Verlezza, who plans to study sign language and photography after she graduates from East Islip in 2015, noted that the chosen photo of alpacas not only was one of her favorites, but reflected her love of her aunt’s alpaca farm in upstate Calicoon. “I visit every single weekend,” she said.

listening to patriotic music. “We have done this activity in our classroom for the last couple of years, to remember and honor our heroes in a child-friendly way,” said Beebe. “The children do an incredible job of capturing patriotic ideas in their drawings.”
St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School is proud to announce that, for the 2013-2014 school year, 105 students have been recognized by the College Board as Advanced Placement (AP) Scholars. Of those who earned this distinction, 48 were recognized as AP Scholars, 29 as AP Scholars with Honor and 28 as AP Scholars with Distinction. In addition to these impressive awards, three students received the highest possible AP designation; namely, National AP Scholar. This is the fourth year in a row in which St. John’s has seen an impressive growth in both AP participation and achievement. Since 2011, the number of AP Scholars at St. John’s has doubled. In addition to this
growth, 28.1% of all 2014 graduating seniors earned a score of 3 on at least one AP exam. SJB currently offers 13 AP classes and is constantly exploring new courses and new opportunities to offer more AP or other university level academic courses and programs. Darius Penikas, Assistant Principal, stated that “this is wonderful news, it confirms that our efforts are yielding success; we are so proud of the academic commitment, focus and work of our students and teachers.” AP represents the Advanced Placement program offered by the College Board. This organization administers a program where course syllabi are submitted and reviewed to gain AP designation. In addition,
the College Board offers exams at the end of the school year to determine whether students who took the AP course gained a college or university level of proficiency in that subject. The exams are graded on a scale of 1-5. Grades at a level of 3 or higher represent college level proficiency in that subject. Many colleges and universities across the United States give college credit to students who earn a 3 or higher on AP exams. To become an AP Scholar a student has to receive a grade of 3 or higher on at least three AP exams. Scholars with Honor and Distinction and National Scholars must earn even higher scores on more exams.
East Islip’s 18th annual FTK Carnival marked the beginning of fall with three days of fantastic fun and games for the district’s families on the fields of Timber Point Elementary School, with proceeds earmarked for the For the Kids Foundation’s ongoing plethora of funding for East Islip’s schools. “Tonight marks the beginning of a new season of FTK, a wonderful organization that continues to give so much back to the children of our district,” said Superintendent of Schools Linda J. Rozzi in her welcoming speech. “This weekend’s magical world of
fun is surely to be enjoyed by all and represents one of FTK’s major fundraisers. Their efforts go to support building-level grant opportunities that promote instruction as well as district initiatives and programs that benefit our youngsters. This organization is truly a friend of public education and a terrific example of community pride.” With three Board of Education members – President Steven Behan, Vice President Philip Montuori Jr. and trustee Christopher Zachry – as well as district administrators, principals and directors in
attendance, the opening ceremony on September 19th featured local Scouts presenting flags and Emily Blair leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Elementary school musicians showcased their talents, with a mixed fourth- and fifth-grade chorus singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and a crowdpleasing performance from district orchestra students. “It’s a pleasure to be part of an event that brings the community together, and that’s exactly what the FTK Carnival does,” said Nancy Goldfader, FTK’s president. “What I love about this is that it’s all about the kids and all for the kids.”

Brian has been a service technician for an energy company in Hampton Bays for the past seven years, which has provided the family with financial stability. However, they had to move multiple times in the past few years for various reasons – pest infestation, a landlord unexpectedly selling the house, etc. During each move, they tried to remain
within the same school district for their children’s sake. As the family underwent the application process, which included “Family Partner/Sweat Equity” meetings, Brian expressed joy over the prospect of homeownership. “Our family is exhausted from moving from rental to rental, each with its own issues,” he said. “Our dream and goal is to own our home so our children do not have to stress
about changing schools. We would be eternally grateful to own a Habitat house. We look forward to helping build the house as well as contributing to the building of other homes. It would give our family pleasure to help others.” This dedication was particularly special, as the Crispino family was featured in Habitat Suffolk’s 25th Anniversary Gala video and the film crew was on site to document the final step in their road to homeownership. After the celebratory program opened with a welcome address, sponsors reflected on the rewards of participating in Habitat community service projects. The Crispino family expressed their gratitude and spoke about their experiences throughout the process. Restoration Efforts Underway A decaying and long neglected historic mansion is finally getting some attention as community leaders, history buffs and architecture aficionados begin a restoration effort to get the building, once home to millionaires and later orphans, into the National Register of Historic Places. Officials, led by Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron, today kicked off an effort to restore the historic, but decaying, more-than-century-old Georgian revival mansion in East Islip, called Brookwood Hall. Flotteron and a group of volunteers from local historic, arts and business organizations spent the morning of September 19, tearing down ceilings and walls of the 1903 brick mansion in an effort to expose some of the 41-room home’s original grandeur. The mansion was designed by New York City architects Delano and Aldrich, who were among the most successful of the generation of architects who took European and classical precedent and forged a personal interpretation of house architecture during the first half of the 20th century. Their clients included the Vanderbilts and Whitneys. Charles Wellford Leavitt, a landscape architect, who also designed elaborate gardens at estates belonging to Walter Chrysler, William Whitney, Henri Bendel and others, designed Brookwood’s grounds. The volunteers found plenty beneath the surface of the more modern ceilings and walls of the mansion’s ballroom, including original crown moldings and wallpaper, and they hope to recreate the breathtaking
view of Wingan-Hauppauge Lake behind the home that visitors once saw from the front door. Flotteron, along with Lynda Moran, executive director of the Islip Arts Council, Ray Lembo, archivist of the East Islip Historical Society - who are spearheading the drive for historic registration - discussed their goals at a press conference at the mansion. Brookwood was once the home of the wealthy Knapp family, later of New York City stockbroker Francis B. Thorne and later, for 23 years, part of the Brooklyn Orphan Asylum. The building
currently houses some Town of Islip offices and the Islip Art Museum. ”We have some town funds to get the restoration effort started and the hope, of course, is to raise additional money so we can complete the restoration of this this magnificent, historic home,” said Flotteron. “We’re starting one room at a time.” “Preserving the historical sites in the Town is our
great responsibility. These sites remind us of our roots as a community, while also helping to educate the next generation,” said Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci. Flotteron said proponents must demonstrate to registry officials the historic value of the building and that efforts are being undertaken to restore the mansion in order to get it listed in the historic registry. “Our goal is to get the building on the National Historic Register and showcase the elegance of the South Shore Gold Coast Era cottages,” said Moran. “This dream will come to life through the ongoing efforts of the community volunteers, historical societies and friends of the Islip Arts Council and the Islip Art Museum.” Officials hope is to complete some of the initial restoration work before the December 7th Annual Orphans Tree Lighting Ceremony at Brookwood Hall. Among the work to be done is restoration of a brick wall by a mason whose specialty is historic restoration. The Islip Town Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs intend to prepare bid documents. The Town of Islip owns the mansion. A fundraising group, Friends of Brookwood Hall Park, is being organized and will begin the process of obtaining IRS authorization to accept donations. Until then, however, donations earmarked for the restoration should be sent to the Islip Arts Council, 50 Irish Lane, East Islip, NY 11730.
