Islip Town Councilman Jim O’Connor, NYS Assemblyman Jarett Gandolfo, The Anchor Church, along with local law enforcement agencies, fire rescue, public library and Chamber of Commerce co-hosted the inaugural Backpack Bash event in

East Islip. “It takes a village to help raise a child, and here in East Islip the call was answered by some of the bravest, boldest, and big-hearted community partners,” said Islip Town Councilman Jim O’Connor. The inaugural event,

provided free stuffed backpacks to all attendees, along with Grab & Go donated school supply stations, which were setup to provide additional supplies for students and their families.

Islip High School Welcomes The Class Of 2025

As members of the freshman Class of 2025 arrived at Islip High School for orientation on Aug. 26, there were cheers as each of the students walked across the threshold. Dressed in Islip purple, the Buccaneer University Mentors welcomed students and parents as they made their way to the auditorium, the first step toward their high school careers. The program commenced with the singing of the national anthem by senior Isabella Green. Assistant Principal Lisa Ward then welcomed the students and introduced the

administration and key faculty. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dennis O’Hara told the students that he feels blessed to be working in the Islip School District. He also mentioned that a growth mindset is very important, as well as incorporating the word “yet” while trying to obtain goals. “Keep thinking about your best effort,” Dr. O’Hara said. Principal Jon LaRochester told the students this is an important year for the school, its 100th anniversary, so the Class of 2025 is an important class.

Grab & Go Backpack Bash Event

“This is a new journey, a new beginning,” Mr. LaRochester said. “There will be a lot of obstacles to navigate, but we will do it together.” The students then separated into groups led by the Buccaneer University Mentors, where they received a tour of the high school and were briefed on topics including various technology, participation in clubs and sports, the student portal and how to follow on social media. At the end of the program, the freshmen were invited to a delicious barbeque in the courtyard.

Helping Hand Rescue Mission(HHRM) is a local non-proﬁt organization that is located at 225 Broadway in Huntington Station, but serves people all over our island. Their mission is to improve the spiritual and temporal conditions of the children, families and people of the communities they serve by providing excellent service to all who come, whether they be rich or poor, high or low social status. They are here to love, to serve and to give.

Thanksgiving Food Distribution: The big, special family meal with that big, wonderful bird shouldn’t be a cause for extra ﬁnancial strain for families in need. Helping Hand Rescue Mission provides Thanksgiving food boxes and turkeys for families so they can cook up their special meal and have it together. In 2020, they served over a thousand families with Thanksgiving food boxes and frozen turkeys that were donated and funded by wonderful churches, businesses, organizations, and families. They believe an enormous part of gratitude is giving back, and they’re so thankful to be able to provide with their community, for their community!

The International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) kicked off in midSeptember and Keep Islip Clean is ready to support and supply volunteers in this unique environmental project. As the name suggests, the ICC is a global initiative designed to collect information on the trash removed during waterway cleanups. It is an initiative

of the Ocean Conservancy in Washington, which uses the data to track international marine pollution trends. An ICC cleanup requires attention to the details of trash found near beaches, streams and wetlands, but it is not a difficult task. Keep Islip Clean will provide instructions for data collection along with all necessary supplies.

Cleanup locations go beyond the shoreline beaches that extend from West Islip through Bayport, and can also include waterways at inland areas throughout Islip. For more information and to register your event, contact KIC at 631-2242627 or keepislipclean@ optonline.net.

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian Open House Proved a Wonderful Family Event for Long Island On September 12, 2021, Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine.org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, recently held its annual Open House. The weather and day could not have been more perfect. Under a beautiful sky, attendees numbering almost 500, enjoyed scheduled tours and demonstrations, a scavenger hunt, games, children’s activities, music

and raffles. There were donkey cart rides, natural horsemanship and cattle lassoing demonstrations, mini horse dress ups, hugs with “Olaf “the chicken, cowboy games, and pumpkin painting. Pal-O-Mine CEO and founder Lisa Gatti said, “It was an incredible event, which was not only great fun for everyone, but also an opportunity for us to raise awareness of the vital programs we provide children and adults with disabilities. The Long Island business community also showed its support in generous sponsorships
