DOCUMENTARY PRESENTATION - On September 10th, the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet presented the student-produced historic documentary, Islip Middle School: The Historical Truth, researched, filmed and developed by Islip’s EXCEL students under the direction of teacher Julia Johnson. Shown w/ Ms. Johnson are society board members Victoria Berger, Matthew Clareen, Kristen Carter, Stephen Kreutzer, Ms. Johnson, Christina Vanasco, Jane Mizrach, Sheila Farrer, Roberta Drake, Arlene Goldman, Kevin Clifford.

East Islip’s Redmen Varsity Football team got off to a flying start on September 12th, winning the first game of the season, 30-7, at home against Suffolk II rivals Walt Whitman. Senior Matt Walter – playing running back, outside linebacker and placekicker – was the star of the day on both offense and defense, racking up a superlative 100 rushing yards, two

touchdowns, a 26-yard field goal, two sacks, six tackles and a fumble recovery. Other highlights included EI running back Jack Hannigan’s 75 yards rushing and 6-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Valoy, and Erik Adon’s 8-yard touchdown late in the game, putting the game out of reach for the Wildcats. The game also marked the official return of the East Islip High School Pep

Band, which along with the school’s cheerleading squad, invigorated the proud and loud crowd of East Islip fans. The reinstatement of the pep band, directed by Christopher Neske, was accomplished through a $3,336 grant donation HISTORY CELEBRATED - On September 12th, Islip Town officials upheld a from the East Islip Youth longstanding annual tradition of celebrating Islip’s sister city - Islip, England. Islip, Football League. Every year, the village of Islip, England flies the Town of Islip flag over its town hall on America’s Independence Day to celebrate the friendship between our two communities. A Week To Remember

This summer, I was given the opportunity to compete at the American Legion Boys’ State Program. For around 1,100 of Long Island’s most promising leaders, this week away from our parents was a big deal. Even though I was rejected from my first application for the program, I did not lose hope. I was soon referred to Mr. Marco Calise, one of the Vice Presidents of the Police Association of Suffolk County. He had faith in me. At one of their meetings, the board, as well as the entire group, debated upon many boys vying for the position. I am proud to say that I was chosen to represent Suffolk County, the Police Association of Suffolk

County and St. John the Baptist DHS. While at this selective program, I met many of America’s future prominent faces. I made many friends, and accomplished a great deal. I was elected City Clerk, County Scribe and even

nominated as my County’s candidate for Boys’ Nation. In addition I assumed the role as Director for the Statesman TV News, as well as the Head Writer for the Statesman Printed News. I would not have been able to fulfill all of these

opportunities without the guidance, support and sponsorship of the Police Association of Suffolk County. This group of men comprised of many, if not all, retired policemen, truly made my dream a reality. They trusted me with their support, and I hope I did not disappoint them. Just last week, I was invited back to the Board Meeting and gave a summation of my experience during my week at Boys’ State. It has been an amazing road, and I am very glad that I found the Police Association of Suffolk County. I would like to finalize this week’s article with a big ‘thank you’ to the Police Association of Suffolk County!

Fading Fast By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s official. Autumn has arrived, and with it, quickly fading are those last golden rays of summer sunshine, any lingering tan lines, the prospect of wearing flip flops and short sleeves … and, as of this printing, the Yankees’ playoff hopes. Just like that. What a difference one week can make, right? I know, I know … get over it. Seasons come and go, weather changes and we all had just better get used to it – and quickly. Each month brings with it its own unique excitement, and there are those who far prefer the

winter cold to any number of days spent lounging on the beach. (I would not be one of them, in case you couldn’t tell.) But here we are, at any rate, on the verge of October, with the holiday season lurking right over the horizon. Tis’ the season for Oktoberfest and Fall Festivals, high school and college Homecoming parades and games, pumpkin picking and Halloween costume parties. Before you know it, we’ll be making our shopping lists for Black Friday. And, just like that, summer will be a distant memory.

So time to dig out the fall sweaters, store the bathing suits away for another season, and embrace the crunch of the leaves beneath your boots. School is back, football is gearing up and the new fall TV season is in full premiere mode. Doesn’t sound so bad after all, does it? Not bad at all... Part of the beauty of living on Long Island is that we are fortunate to experience all four seasons – may as well start enjoying them. There will always be something to look forward to, somewhere else you would rather be … but there’s still nothing quite like the here and now.

The Dance Connection Competition Team performed aboard the Carnival Sensation on a four-night cruise to the Bahamas this July. The Dance Connection Competition Team took to the high seas this July performing aboard the Carnival Sensation. They performed a fantastic line-up of their awardwinning competition numbers for the standing room only crowd on July 17th, receiving a standing ovation from their fellow cruise passengers at the completion of their program. The group enjoyed exploring the ports of call, participating in a workshop with one of the Carnival performers, as well as being treated to a question and answer session with the ship’s Dance Captain and photos with the cast of the Sensation’s evening shows after their final performance. The trip is part of Dance Connection’s efforts to have their students experience a variety of opportunities
