The junior girls – consisting of Jessica Carino, Amanda Engrassia, Julia Kurtz, Julie Rizzo and Anya Schmitt – placed second overall in a field of 29 teams in their 5K race.

REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY - The Town of Islip recently held its annual September 11th Remembrance Ceremony, which took place at Veterans Memorial Park, outside of Town Hall. Members of the Islip Town Board read aloud the names of all Islip residents who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11th. Local volunteer firemen also paid tribute to the first responders who died while trying to rescue those trapped inside the World Trade Center.

Apple Festival The Town of Islip Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department will host the annual Apple Festival on Saturday, October 4th, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Islip Grange, located at 10 Broadway Avenue in Sayville. In case of inclement weather, a rain date has been set for Sunday, October 5th. Admission is free for all and many activities will be offered at a low-cost.

There will be fun for the whole family with more than 200 different vendors and exhibitors present, as well as a Kid Fun Zone. Families will also be able to go pumpkin picking, participate in arts and crafts and enjoy various apple treats. $1.00 carousel rides are available for children, as well. Live music is also planned with performances by Slang the Band, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, and Southband

from 12:30 p.m to 4:30 p.m. Plus, there will be a special appearance by B103 Radio Station. Food will be available for purchase at the large festival food court. So Far, So Good College is unlike anything I’ve ever gone through. High school was four years of academic grinding, while college has proven to be pretty awesome. The workload isn’t too bad so far, which has allowed me to get involved on campus. I’m on the rugby team, I’ve joined a few clubs, and I’m writing for the school newspaper. College has not been all work and no play. The unfortunate moniker “Villanofun” has proven false, and I’m having the time of my life. I miss home, however. The new friends I’ve made here

are great and all, but nobody could replace my mom, dad and brother. They are the foundation to what will hopefully be my success. My mom and dad are the driving force in my life. I can’t wait until I see them during Parents’ Weekend, because somebody needs to do my laundry! Although I’m just kidding about the laundry, the idea that I miss the little things about home rings true. I miss my bed. I miss my car. I miss my old life. With that being said, I’m really liking the new life which I have formed here.

The kids on my ﬂoor are like family to me, and I’ve only been here a month. We are all in this together, and the communal sense of commitment has brought us closer together. I feel as though we know what each of us are going through, so bonds have become strengthened. The guys on my rugby team have been more than friendly as well. We are a team, and during games I can always expect them to have my back. I’m very excited to see what the rest of my four years of college have to offer.

misunderstanding song lyrics. Which, for someone who has what I would call a fairly deep appreciation for words, is a bit odd. It just goes to show that the art of enunciation is going the way of cassette tapes and CDs – lost, down the drain, nonexistent. It’s funny, with the advent of apps like Pandora and Spotify, most lyrics are just a glance away. To say my interpretation of them

lyrics – pure poetry; listen to them – and you’re left a bit confused. Rap is another genre that I’ve always had a problem translating. While the delivery may be impressive, there are times when you question whether what you’re listening to is English or not. Listen to the censored version and, well, there goes most of the lyrics altogether. Country, while one of my least favorite choices

when it comes to properly conveying the message at hand. If only the sound was a bit less… twangy. Ah, but that’s what makes the musical merrygo-round so fun, isn’t it? Styles for everyone, and a million different ways to access them. What did we do before all this technology? Oh right, we listened to the radio and misunderstood the lyrics. The good old days.

Walk, Run & Ride For Autism for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities on Long Island, will be hosting its “DDI Walk, Run and Ride for Autism,” on Sunday, October 12th, at the Holtsville Ecology Center. The walk, run and motorcycle/classic car rally will help to promote community support for individuals with Autism and other developmental disabilities. “This event is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said co-chair of the event Charley Hudson. “It is heartwarming to have talented individuals enthusiastically lend themselves to help benefit thousand of fellow Long Islanders.” This year’s event Grand Marshals are seven extraordinary people who for the second year

in a row, spent one week walking 128-miles from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Montauk Lighthouse in order to benefit DDI. Raising over $40,000 from both walks, Nathan Holmes, John Kenny, Morgan Zajkowski, Ellen McBurney, Peter Barker, Marita Rausch and Liam Kenny have proved to be worthy honorees. Registration for the 5K Fun Run will begin at 8 a.m. with the run to commence at 9 a.m. The scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County’s Holtsville Ecology Park will feature activities for the entire family along the way, followed by a festival in the park complete with picnic lunch, music, games, a petting zoo and more. Registration for the walk begins at 9 a.m. and with the walk beginning at 11 a.m. The family activities will continue throughout the day until

2:30 p.m. This year the event will not only feature a Motorcycle ride, but also include classic and show cars, sponsored by Hansen Home Designs. Motorcycle and car registration begins at 9 a.m. at Hansen Home Designs located at 1541 Smithtown Avenue in Bohemia. Pink Rock Classic The 2014 Pink Rock Classic golf tournament will take place on Monday, October 6th at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills. The event benefits the Fund for the Uninsured at the Fortunato Breast Health Center at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital. The Fund for the Uninsured was established to provide access to stateof-the-art breast screenings and diagnostic procedures for patients without health insurance. Jean Larsen of Stony Brook, a breast cancer survivor who faced a huge personal debt from battling the disease, came up with the idea of the Pink Rock Classic to help others in a similar situation. She and her friend and former co-worker Walter Hurney put together the Pink Rock Classic golf tournament. Now in its seventh year, the event has raised more

than $420,000 for people in need. The 18-hole outing begins at 11 a.m. with registration and lunch. The shot-gun start begins at 1 p.m. The day includes a cocktail hour followed by a grand buffet dinner and awards ceremony beginning at 6 p.m. The fee for the day is $350 per player or $1,400 per foursome.
