Throughout the farewell concert, campers clapped along and played tambourines, maracas and drums. A crowd favorite was Ms. Crean’s leading of a rendition of “Down by the Bay,” during which the campers lent new lyrics to the popular American folk song. At the end of the farewell concert, the group invited Ms. Costello to the center of the performance area to receive thanks from the campers, who sang to her in appreciation. Ok, now it’s official. Autumn can commence. Why? Because today is the actual autumnal equinox, the moment all those fall fanatics have been eagerly anticipating since, well, probably since last autumn. I know September 1st is the unofficial introduction of all things pumpkin spice, but, believe it or not, there are a few more factors to consider when introducing a new season. For instance, cooler weather, the start of football and “Sunday Fundays,” playoff baseball, fall TV premieres… all things that were absent as of September 1st. And, while Halloween merchandise

has been on the shelves since July, guess what? It’s still over a month away. And Christmas – don’t even get me started on that. Three months to go. Three MONTHS. Plenty of time. No need to make those lists and check them twice quite yet. And yet… as I write this, the temperature sits at a positively summery 81º - perfect for pumpkin picking, hayrides and corn mazes… if all those things took place on a beach. But no worries, the season is still young – plenty of time for the autumn chill to settle in and the boots and scarves to be dragged out of the closet for that first brisk afternoon walk through the fallen foliage.

‘Tis the season of fall festivals and Oktoberfest celebrations, of raking and home improvement projects, of toasty evenings spent curled up with a (pumpkin) spiced latte and a book. Sure, it has its benefits. If you like that sort of thing. Me, I’ll be the one walking along the shoreline at the beach, camera (or iPhone) in hand, trying to capture the perfect autumnal sunset shot. I’ll get into the spirit eventually. Maybe once October hits. I might even check out the Halloween merchandise. And start making my Christmas list… Nah, who am I kidding. That’s what Black Friday is for.

Throughout the summer, the instructors and camp counselors worked with the campers to create and practice on instruments made from re-purposed materials, such as art dowels and five-gallon paint buckets for drumming and plastic bottles filled with rice that served as clackers and maracas. Citing a camper who spent her time during the music program creating beautiful works of art, Mr. Licitra explained how music has a positive effect on everyone. He feels this is especially true of disabled children and young adults, like those at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, who might not otherwise be able to communicate their joy and enthusiasm. The Islip Town Board was recently joined by members of local volunteer fire departments, clergy, and other local leaders at a ceremony that paid tribute to all those who lost their lives in the terror attacks of September 11th, 2001. The ceremony, which took place at the Town’s 9/11 Memorial located just outside of Town Hall, is part of Islip’s annual tradition to honor the members of the Islip community who

died in the attacks. Local volunteer firefighters led a solemn parade through Main Street, before Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter offered brief remarks on the importance of the day. The Islip Town Board then read the names of the ninety people from Islip who were killed on that day. “It’s been 14 years since the 9/11 attacks, and the families of those who perished on 9/11 have

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund, a nonprofit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh, is holding its 3rd Annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmingdale Lanes on October 24th. On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund has been designed to assist children just like Brittney - young people who excel in academics, push themselves to give 100% in sports and are active in school clubs. Islip Town officials recently announced the start of a landscape restoration project at Brookwood Hall in East Islip, a decaying and long neglected historic mansion. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and Town Councilman Steve Flotteron marked the beginning of efforts to restore the historic mansion’s gardens at a press conference held at the 1903 Georgian-revival mansion on Irish Lane. A year ago, community leaders, history buffs and architecture aficionados announced plans to begin a restoration effort to get the building, once home to millionaires and later orphans, back to its former glory. Landscaping crews and equipment are working to restore a tree alley - a tree lined walkway - and create a new lakeside patio behind the mansion. “Brookwood Hall is a local landmark and a treasure for our community, and has a place in the cultural

and historical fabric of our Town,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “Islip has been working hard to restore this building to it’s original grandeur by partnering with our local businesses community,” said Councilman Steve Flotteron, adding, “We are proud to report that the town has received over $400,000 worth of donated materials and labor, at no cost to the taxpayers, to fund this project.” Anthony Quintal, president of Quintal Contracting Corporation of Islip, donated countless amounts of materials and labor to this project. “In my designs, I have recreated the landscape and the hardscape of Brookwood Hall. We’ve made some enhancements, while retaining the original aesthetics,” he said, noting that he worked with the Giaquinto family, of Deer Park, to develop a site survey and the Bay Shore-based engineering firm, Graham Associates, to create computer-aided-

designs for the project. The mansion was designed by New York City architects Delano and Aldrich, who were among the most successful of the generation of architects who took European and classical precedent and forged a personal interpretation of house architecture during the first half of the 20th century. Their clients included the Vanderbilts and Whitneys. Charles Wellford Leavitt, a landscape architect, who also designed elaborate gardens at estates belonging to Walter Chrysler, William Whitney, Henri Bendel and others, designed Brookwood Hall’s grounds. Brookwood Hall was once the home of the wealthy Knapp family, later of New York City stockbroker Francis B. Thorne and later, for 23 years, part of the Brooklyn Orphan Asylum. The building currently houses some Town of Islip offices and the Islip Art Museum.

New Scholarship Program Recently, National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) and UNCF (United Negro College Fund) announced the establishment of the UNCF Achievement Capstone Program. The new program, which will be administered by UNCF and underwritten by NMSC with funds from the National Achievement® Scholarship Program, will honor and grant financial assistance to high-achieving, underrepresented college graduates at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs) in the United States. The National Achievement Scholarship Program has recognized and honored academically talented Black American high school students for 51 years. The final group of high school students to be

recognized in the program entered college in 2015. UNCF will carry on the National Achievement Scholarship Program’s name and legacy through the newly-designed UNCF Achievement Capstone Program, launching in the spring of 2016. UNCF Achievement Capstone Scholars will be nominated by their college or university presidents, chancellors, and deans based on outstanding academic performance, character, and demonstrated leadership honoring the legacy of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Awardees may use the scholarship to pay off outstanding u n d e r g r a d u a t e educational costs at their current institutions, or to finance additional degrees, professional certifications, and continuing education programs. “UNCF is honored to

carry on the name and legacy of a prestigious program which began at a time in our nation where earning a college degree was a social and financial challenge for many African Americans,” said Dr. Michael L. Lomax, UNCF President and CEO. “We are humbled to take on the mantle of the UNCF Achievement Capstone Program, which not only allows UNCF to help students make it to and through college, but now also helps them after they have earned a college degree.” The National Achievement Scholarship Program is a privatelyfinanced academic competition established in 1964 specifically to provide recognition and college scholarships for Black American high school students. The program has been conducted by NMSC, a privately-financed, not-

for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, and also conducts the National Merit® Scholarship Program. The two programs have been conducted simultaneously, but administered and funded separately. NMSC is proud to partner with UNCF, the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization, to establish the UNCF Achievement Capstone Program. For more than 70 years, UNCF has worked to get students to and through college, and awards more than $100 million in scholarships annually. This program will further expand UNCF’s reach to AfricanAmerican students across the country who will benefit from the honor, recognition, and financial assistance accompanying these awards.

In the half century since the National Achievement Scholarship Program was created, more than four million Black Americans have entered the program, and approximately 228,000 have received program recognition. Of those honored, more than 34,000 of the most outstanding participants were chosen to receive Achievement Scholarship® awards worth about $108 million. Currently, about 3,200 of these young men and women are undergraduates at 300 colleges and universities across the nation. Since the National Achievement Scholarship Program’s funds will be redirected to provide awards for college graduates, Black American high school students will no longer have the opportunity to enter the National Achievement Scholarship Program.

However, they can still compete for awards when they enter the National Merit Scholarship Program, and they may be eligible to receive awards from UNCF under this new program once they graduate from college. “The history and accomplishments of the National Achievement Scholarship Program are great, and NMSC is proud of the program’s 51 successful years,” said Mr. Timothy E. McGuire, NMSC President and CEO. “Through its partnership with UNCF, NMSC looks forward to the new direction of the National Achievement Scholarship Program and its funding of awards for high-achieving, underrepresented college graduates in the newly-created UNCF Achievement Capstone Program.”

As a final summer hurrah, the Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo (LIGF) hosted its Back to School Blast on Saturday, August 29th. Hundreds of visitors, including some from across the country, traveled to the park to experience reduced admission prices, face painting and all of the zoo’s traditional exhibits and shows. The guests also were presented with giveaways, such as notebooks from Staples

for the first 100 guests and coupon books from Tanger Outlets Riverhead. The mall also gave away one $100 shopping spree to Solomon Yakubov, of Fresh Meadows. He also received a stuffed giraffe courtesy of LIGF and in honor of the zoo’s mascot, Clifford the Giraffe. The 25-acre Game Farm features interactive animal experiences, in which guests are able to get up close and personal with their favorite animals. This year features

its newest attractions: the Camel Encounter, where guests are able to hand-feed camels and learn fun facts from staff, and the Priceless Parrot Encounter at the Discovery Center. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has announced an October 2nd, application deadline for tuition reimbursement through their historic educational initiative, the Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York State. “The FASNY HELP program has benefitted hundreds of dedicated firefighters serving communities across the State. In addition to helping meet the staffing needs of local departments, a better educated firefighter is simply a better firefighter. For the student volunteers and the fire departments, this is the very definition of a ‘win-win’ situation,” said

FASNY President Robert McConville. Under FASNY HELP, any active volunteer firefighter, in good standing, and who hasn’t already achieved a college degree is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement. The reimbursement is in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic courses that the HELP student-volunteer can pursue, either on a full-time or part-time basis. FASNY HELP also covers online courses taken through Empire State College. FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters. Eligible student-volunteers must maintain acceptable levels

The hotline, which can be reached at 800.877.8077, is still in operation seven days a week, but Edmonson says the online chat is yet another way to make sure that people get the help they want. “Our motto is ‘you are not alone,’” she says, “and whether it’s on the phone or through the internet we want to be there for people.”

Spencer awarded a proclamation to Second Precinct Inspector Edward Brady upon his retirement from the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD).
