The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available). Jackie, a local Long Islander, was nominated to be a wish recipient by her friend at work. Jackie works at Walmart and would walk to work and assist residents at her local nursing home while she wasn’t working. Her friends wanted to make it easier for her to get around. After the wish was received, James Ciervo and Barbara Ransom of the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce helped get Jackie a beautiful bicycle. They brought the bicycle to her workplace and the smile on her face was ear to ear! This foundation is presently looking for more wish applicants in the Long Island area. The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Although their headquarters are located in Pennsylvania, the foundation has chapters located around the nation. James Ciervo, who devoted much of his life to helping seniors, created their Long Island Chapter 15 years ago. His career was in the senior health care industry for many years and he continues to help seniors through the Twilight Wish Foundation today. The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www.twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else. The recipient of the wish must be 65 years of age or older (or a permanent resident of an eldercare facility), a legal US citizen, have an annual income of less than 200% of current federal government published poverty level income, or be unable to grant your own wish (not including financial reasons), have a history of giving back to others, be cognitively and physically capable of communicating and

Honorary Membership Bestowed Great South Bay Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, has elected to bestow Honorary Membership to Gina Lieneck of Deer Park, New York. Gina’s family was involved in boating accident on August 17th, 2005 which critically injured her, and her husband, and killed her 11-year-old daughter, Brianna. Since the crash, Gina Lieneck has been tirelessly advocating for a bill that would require individuals to take an eight-hour course on boating safety before they can operate a motorized boat. After several stalls in Albany over several years, on August 6th, 2019, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed ‘Brianna’s Law’ in Copiague, NY. Under the new bill, all motor boat operators born on or after Jan. 1, 1993 must complete a safety course to operate a motor boat beginning in 2020, those born after Jan. 1, 1988

Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic The Suffolk County Department of Health Services and the Town of Islip will offer free rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats and ferrets on Saturday, September 28, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Brookwood Hall located at 50 Irish Lane in East Islip. Although the clinic is available to all county residents, the quantity of vaccine is limited and available only while supplies last. All dogs must be on leashes and all cats and ferrets must be in carriers. New York State and Suffolk County laws require that all dogs, cats and ferrets be vaccinated against rabies. Vaccinating pets not only provides protection for the animals but also acts as a barrier to keep the rabies virus from spreading between wild animals and people. The Suffolk County Department of Health Services recommends the following precautions to protect your pets and your family from possible exposure to rabies: · Do not feed, touch or
approach wild animals, or stray dogs or cats. · Be sure your pet dogs, cats and ferrets as well as horses and other livestock animals are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations. ·Pets too young to be vaccinated should be kept indoors and allowed outside only under direct observation. · Do not attract wild animals to your home or yard. Keep your property free of stored bird seed or other foods that may attract wild animals. Feed pets indoors. Tightly cover or put away garbage cans. Board up any openings to your attic, basement, porch or garage. Cap your chimney with screens. · Do not transport or relocate any wild animals. · Teach children not to touch any animal they do not know and to tell an adult immediately if they are bitten by any animal. To keep bats from getting into buildings: · Not leaving unscreened doors open to the outside · Not leaving unscreened windows open to the outside
· Making sure windows have screens, chimneys are capped, and electrical and plumbing openings are plugged · Using materials such as expanding spray-on foam, caulk, wire mesh, wood that fits tightly, or polypropylene bird netting, to seal or cover gaps and holes Report all animal bites or contact with wild animals to the Suffolk County Department of Health Services at (631) 853-0333 weekdays, 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Animal bites or contact with wild animals can be reported to the Department at (631) 852-4820 outside normal business hours. If possible, try to contain the animal so that it can be tested.
