Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC Area.

Valhalla is 34’ long 12’ 3” wide, a very stable boat that has plenty of room for both wheelchairs and passengers with a wide transom door and a hardtop enclosure for protection from the elements.

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts (www.usdan.com), the nationally acclaimed summer arts day camp, will present its ninth annual Usdan Chess Challenge on Sunday, October 4th, at its Maurice Hexter Chess Center on Long Island. Open to grades K-12, the tournament is US Chess Federation-rated, and will be directed by Usdan Chess Instructors Brian Karen and Joel Salman. On-site registration is from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. the day of the tournament, and the first round is at 12 noon. Pink Rock Classic The 9th Annual Pink Rock Classic golf tournament will take place Monday, October 5th, at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills. The annual golf tournament benefits the Fund for Uninsured at the Fortunato Breast Health Center at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital. The Fund for Uninsured was established to provide access to state-of-the-art breast screenings and diagnostic procedures for patients without health insurance. Jean Larsen of Stony Brook, a breast cancer survivor who faced a huge personal debt from battling the disease, came up with the idea of the Pink Rock Classic to help others in a similar situation. She and her friend and former coworker Walter Hurney put together the Pink Rock Classic golf tournament. The event has raised more than $450,000 for people in need. The 18-hole outing begins at 11 a.m. with registration and lunch. The shot-gun start begins at 1 pm. The day includes a cocktail hour followed by a grand buffet dinner and awards ceremony beginning at 6 p.m. The fee for the day is $350 per player or $1,400 per foursome. For grand buffet dinner and cocktails only, tickets are $150 per person. It’s been days, and still no sign of my human. No light on in the kitchen. No food pellet delivery at dinnertime. No – dare I say it – bath time. Nothing. Where did she go? Alone in my bowl, I swim my solitary laps, counting down the hours, days, weeks… it must be weeks by now. Just me and my plant (which, by the way, is starting to look pretty tasty at this point). I should’ve known something was up when I found a few extra ﬂakes in my bowl right after the last human sighting. And the suitcase… what was that for? Come to think of it, I heard something about “vacation,” whatever that

is, and then this giant bettashaped vitamin was placed in my bowl with promises of food coming shortly. When? It’s already been at least a month. Time tends to fast forward when you live in a bowl. But, wait… here it is – a ﬂake. And another. Where did they come from? No human in sight, but this little vitamin seems to be melting into food! Oh thank goodness! She didn’t forget about me after all. I wonder if she’ll ever be back? {826 Days Later…} I hear a noise! The front door… the light… MY HUMAN HAS RETURNED! Oh boy, oh boy! If I had longer fins, I’d give her the biggest hug ever! Oh, and here comes the good food,

my gourmet pellets, with a few extra thrown in – how sweet. She didn’t abandon me after all. But where did she go? I see the suitcase… but no presents? No souvenirs for Buddy? And what’s this about “bath time” now? She’s been home five minutes and already this nonsense about cleaning out the remnants of the vitamin from my bowl. Good grief. There had better be a good explanation for all this. I expect a special trip to the pet store this weekend to pick out a new toy… and extra food… and at least a week’s notice the next time one of these “vacation” things takes place. Better yet, I expect to be invited along.

Kinney and Timber Point elementary schools – streamed back to classes on September 3rd full of excitement at the prospect of a brand-new school year. “What an amazing first day at Timber Point,” said the school’s new principal, Danielle Naccarato. “The excitement, anticipation and energy were felt in the air. Seeing all of the students’ smiles just made my day.” “There is life again at

East Islip High School,” said Principal Bill Brennen, as his building filled with new freshmen and seniors nearing the end of their long educational journey at the district. “It’s great to have our students back, excited and ready to learn.” It didn’t take long for the returning students to get back in the swing of things, academically. “The first- and secondgrade children were eager to be back learning and fell quickly into a familiar routine, working on literacy and numeracy skills right from the start,” said Connetquot Principal Deborah Smith. “Our new entrants and kindergartners were all

smiles as they made many new friends and were warmly welcomed into the Connetquot family.” While the heat outside recalled the joys of summer, inside the buildings it was full steam ahead, adjusting to new schools and reconnecting with classmates. J F K Principal Aileen O’Rourke said, “Our first day of school at JFK was successful, despite the extremely hot temperatures. We welcomed back our fourthand fifth-graders and were thrilled to meet our new third-graders. We look forward to a wonderful school year.”

St. John’s University awarded him an Advanced Certificate in School Building and School District Leadership and he is currently enrolled there for his Doctorate. Care Package Donation In memory of her son, Dylan Joseph, who was born prematurely at Good Samaritan Hospital on January 6th, 2015, Michele decided to bring care packages to other moms staying at their babies’ bedsides in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The support and
